The smartphone offers a technical sheet in continuity of its predecessor: its interior screen retains a diagonal of 6.7 inches, but promises increased brightness, its snapdragon chip goes to generation 8 gen 2 and its photo block, like its battery, display characteristics identical to those of Z Flip 4.

On the price side, count € 1,191 for its least expensive version (8/256 GB), 30 € more than the Galaxy Z Flip 4 when it comes out, in a similar configuration. The latter had the advantage of being also available in 8/128 GB, at € 1,109. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, a little more expensive, must convince its relevance to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 to which it succeeds, but also in front of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, even the Huawei P50 Pocket. The Find N2 Flip of Oppo, which could have established itself as an interesting alternative to the newcomer of Samsung, is not marketed on the hexagonal market.

Ergonomics and design

Several innovations allow Z Flip 5 to gain modernity. The first is due to its hinge: the smartphone adopts a model in the shape of a drop of water which allows it to close entirely, without the space that could be observed on the previous generations delivered by Samsung. This is good news, since the device is now capable of displaying a thickness of 15.1 mm when it is folded, in all sides, when the Z Flip 4 was between 15.9 and 17.1 mm D ‘thickness. This hinge in the shape of a drop of water, which appears late to the Korean, even though its competitors offer it on their terminals in valve and book formats, gave it a hard time, since it was for him offer on this generation of mobiles an IPX8 certification to which he has accustomed his customers. The rest of its chassis is made up of Armor aluminum, its external screen is protected by a Gorilla Glass Victus 2 window (Victus+ on the Z Flip 4), and its weight is maintained at 187 grams. Its dimensions, once unfolded, varies barely: it measures 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm, thanks to its stretched screen ratio (165.2 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm for z Flip 4), and 85.1 x 71.9 x 15.1 mm when closed (84.9 x 71.9 mm for Flip 4); Its new hinge therefore adds a small millimeter to the device once folded.

The second novelty to remember from the smartphone is due to its external screen. Exit the 1.9 -inch slab present on Flip 4, place at an amoled slab of 3.4 inch, with a large notch surrounding a double photo module, similar to that of Flip 4. The effect is obviously successful.

For the rest, nothing really changes. The interior screen, in P-Oled (Polymer Organic Light Emitted Dynamic), keeps the same fairly sensitive fold, especially in the face of current competition, which has managed to alleviate the bulging in the middle of the folding slabs. If we except this point, we note fine borders (it occupies 85.86 % of the available space), and a punch to accommodate an interior camera. The fingerprint reader does not move: it remains located on the switching key of the smartphone, next to the volume adjustment bar.

The connection does not change: a USB-C port, compatible with the load at 25 W, rest of the game. Audio is nevertheless served by Bluetooth 5 connectivity.3 (5.2 on Flip 4), and we note the 6th WiFi support on the new smartphone.

Finally, let’s add that the back of Flip 5 is similar to that of Flip 4, and remains flat, but that Samsung has opted for a brilliant finish, which hangs fingerprints a little – for a matte appearance, you have to turn to Editions exclusive to the Samsung online store … Anyway, we appreciate the appearance of new colors, water green and cream, which are added to the most traditional graphite and lavender.

Screen

The interior screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is quite similar to that of the Z Flip 4, since the same P-Oled technology adopts, where it keeps the same fold and the same diagonal of 6.7 inches. Its resolution is maintained at 425 pp, its cooling rate varies between 1 and 120 Hz; In short, on paper, the changes seem thin.

If you have to look for a novelty, it is on the side of the maximum brightness of this dile, given which contributes to the good readability of the screens when the smartphones are used outdoors. On the Z Flip 5, it still reaches 1,302 cd/m 2, one of the highest values ​​of our comparison. Not only is this brightness high, which allows the consultation of this outdoor screen, but the reflectance of the said slab is low, only 28.51 %. The comfort of use is therefore there, even in great sun. We also note that it is possible to descend up to 0.995 cd/m 2, to use the smartphone in the dark without however attacking its mirettes.

Note here that Samsung announces a maximum brightness of 1,750 cd/m 2: this applies to the display of HDR content, which allowed us to reach 1,588 cd/m 2 for our part . It is already a lot.

The calibration of the internal screen of the Z Flip 5 is quite similar to that of its predecessor. Two modes are offered: lively, proposed by default, and which results in a slightly high (3.2) deltae, but less than that of Z Flip 4, testifying to some colorimetric drifts. The color temperature is however less cold than last year, since we measured 6,996 k in our probes, against 7,146 k on the Flip 4. By opting for the “natural” display, the temperature approaches 6,500 k which constitute the reference value, with 6,356 k (the colors are slightly hot), against 6,756 k for his predecessor. The Deltae drops to 1.8. Oled obliges, the contrast is almost infinite, and the time of null. We have measured a touch delay of 77 ms, in the wake of the 78 ms noted on the Flip 4.

A word on the external screen (Cover Screen) from Z Flip 5, an AMOLED slab which displays for its part 720 x 748 pixels on a diagonal of 3.4 inch, for a resolution of 306 pp. Samsung announces 1,600 cd/m 2 in peak, which we could not achieve. We have still measured 929 cd/m 2, which remains an excellent value. And it is happy, since this screen is strongly subject to reflections: we have measured a reflectance of 68.5 %, this good below that of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, but still notable.

Note that on the calibration side, the colors are relatively fair (6,264 k in natural mode, 6,786 k in lively mode, but with marked drifts in this last mode (Deltae of 5.3 in live mode, and 3.2 in natural fashion). Insofar as this screen, despite the optimization of Netflix as soon as the smartphone is launched, does not really seem to be for watching videos, this does not seem penalizing.

Performance

With the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip (for Galaxy, clocked at 3.36 GHz) that the Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is armed to satisfy both graphic performance and for current uses. With its 8 GB of RAM (UFS 4.0), the smartphone collects an index as high as that of the Galaxy S23, and is perfectly fluid in use. However, there is a heating tendency as soon as the chip is requested by uses such as the camera.

On the graphic performance side, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has little to prove. The chip allows the smartphone to display an average of around 124 i/s, oscillating in use between 103 and 134 i/s. We still note that the framerate tends to drop faster than with the S23 series, undoubtedly the fault of the heating mentioned above. Even at the bottom, it remains high enough to take advantage of all types of applications comfortably. And above all, Flip 5 rises at the forefront of folding valiant smartphones in terms of power.

Samsung has concentrated the majority of its efforts on the outdoor screen, the hinge and, to a lesser extent, the interface of its Z Flip 5, choosing not to renew all of its components. We thus find a dorsal photo module identical to that of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, comprising two sensors of 12 megapixels each. The first is flanked by a large angle (equivalent to 24 mm, f/1.8) and the second, of an ultra-angle (f/2.2). The smartphone therefore does not reach the versatility of a Galaxy Z Fold or a Galaxy S, all of which have a module with telephoto lens.

Main module: 12 Mpx, f/1.8, EQ. 24 mm

The results delivered by the main module of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 are very comparable to those of the Galaxy S23 series, and we spot the same tendency to slightly overexpose the images. Despite a definition limited to 12 MP, the images benefit from a high bitter, the textures being rather well restored. The colors are missing a little, but we appreciate the quality of the image, even on the outskirts. The qualities of the Motorola Razr are other: the colors are fairer, and the treatment softer, but the contrasts being less accentuated, the image seems less clear.

In low light, digital noise appears quickly, and harms the readability of the image, especially on the slots of our scene. The details are partly smoothed, but the treatment of Samsung makes it possible to keep the contours of the small elements, at least in part.

Ultra Grand-Angle Module: 12 Mpx, F/2.2

This tendency to overexposure is confirmed at the ultra grand angle, where we mainly identify areas on which the development is random. If the results are convincing in the big angle, they are much less so with this module, even by day.

Night images are also struggling to convince, but it should be noted that despite software failures (see the cover of the book), the colors have at least the merit of being properly returned, unlike Razr 40 Ultra.

Portrait mode, front and video module

Samsung does not change the situation, whether it is video, always offered up to 4K at 60 i/s on the back, and at 30 i/s on the front (see our test of the Galaxy Z Flip 4). Selfies are always provided by a 10 MP sensor, which allows you to obtain shots missing a little detail, but whose treatment flats the lines. Portrait mode is also effective. It should be remembered that thanks to the Flex mode, it is possible to capture selfies and VLOG type videos using the back sensors, using the Cover Display as a monitor; The internal sensor has mainly interest in punctual videos.

Autonomy

Samsung has largely concentrated its efforts on the design and the external screen of its Z Flip 5, notably retaining the battery of the Z Flip 4 and even its power power. We are therefore dealing here with a 3,700 mAh accumulator compatible with a 25 W load, which was however proven to be a little more swively than last year. For a full load, it took us 1 h 16, ten minutes less than with his predecessor. Remember here that the smartphone is delivered without load block, but with the cable (USB-C/USB-C) suitable. It is also compatible with the 15 W wireless load.

The design of folding smartphones is subject to space contraits that do not allow the integration of large accumulators and limits that of cooling systems. They often struggle to ensure rivaling autonomy with that of conventional models, but they must be conceded a point: the use of the external screen, which avoids lighting the entire slab for simple uses (musical control , visualization of notifications, etc.), helps limit energy consumption. But it remains difficult to quantify the economy carried out, and we measure the autonomy ensured by the “open” smartphone on our side. It is established, according to our measures, at around 11:17 a.m. before extinction. An increasing performance if we compare Flip 5 to Flip 4, but which is behind traditional monobloc smartphones, and even Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. In fact, you will be able to reach the day of use, but may break down dry if the evening continues late at night.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 runs on Android 13 with Oneui 5.1.1, which especially allows the smartphone to distinguish itself by its external screen and its flex mode, which allows for example to use the exterior screen as a photo monitor, or to split the internal screen in half.

The Cover Screen now allows you to accommodate widgets (weather, chronometer, calendar, etc.), notifications, whose shortcuts which allow for example to control musical reading on Spotify, Deezer and other readers; but also optimized applications for its small format. This is where the main screen limit is: few applications, at the launch of the smartphone at least, are suitable for this screen. You find Google Maps, what is practical, Google Messages or Samsung Messages (in duplicate therefore) with their full keyboard, YouTube and Netflix. However, these two applications seem much less relevant than a WhatsApp or even a “x” Twitter or simply Chrome. However, it is possible to overcome this limitation through the Good Lock application developed by Samsung, which allows you to add shortcuts to any type of applications on the exterior screen of the smartphone; However, they are not optimized for its format.
