A fluid and bright screen

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is equipped with an AMOLED screen with a 22: 9 ratio, a 6.7 -inch diagonal with a definition of 2640 x 1080 pixels. As we are used to Samsung, two screen modes are accessible in the parameters: “lively” and “natural”. They are perfectly named as the first displays shimmering colors that flatter the eye and the second a duller rendering, but also more realistic. With the “lively” mode, we managed to measure an average delta e of 4.32, that is a colorimetric drift perceptible to the naked eye. The “natural” mode does better with a 3.49 delta e. It’s very good, but the competition does much better on this price tranche. We will cite for example the Xiaomi 12 Pro, the iPhone 13 Pro or the Oppo Find X5 Pro which are exemplary in the matter.

The secondary screen also benefits from an Amoled slab, with a 1.9 inch diagonal and a definition of 260 x 512 pixels. It is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus+ as the rest of the shell. The screen is bright enough to be readable in all circumstances, which is particularly appreciable to consult the time when its notifications without having to open the phone, we will come back to it in the interface part.

With its Galaxy Z Flip 4, Samsung once again shows its know-how in the design of oled tiles of excellent quality. If you are ready to be over the feeling of the fold under your finger, the screen of the Z Flip 4 does not have much to envy those of non -folding screens.

Very good performances, but.

The phone has a Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chip from Qualcomm equipped with an Adreno 730 SOC. It is simply the most powerful SOC available to date on an Android smartphone. Add 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage in UFS 3.1 and you have a real racing beast on paper.

On the Benchmark Antutu, the Z Flip 4 displays a 949 728 points score, just in front of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and its Exynos 2200 SOC, but behind the Xiaomi 12 Pro equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 at the start of the year. An astonishing result since we expected to find the folding smartphone of the Korean brand at the top of the ranking and beyond the million points.

A score which is explained by the constraints with which the engineers had to compose from Samsung. The phone is made up of two separate “bodies” held by the hinge. The SOC is in the upper part of the phone, which is felt when the phone rises in temperature when it is strongly requested as during the 3DMARK stability test.

The latter allows to measure the level of throttling of the telephone which corresponds to a drop in the frequency of the SOC (and therefore of performance) to avoid smartphone to rise too much in temperature. It is also a choice of engineers to preserve the battery and the set of components of the product.

The 3DMARK stability score unfortunately confirmed our suspicions. To promote autonomy, Samsung has chosen to bride in a fairly violent way the performance of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 Gen1. After only a few minutes thoroughly, phone performance dropped by 60.5 % before stabilizing, which explains the very bad result of 39.5 of the Z Flip 4. By way of comparison, the performance of the ultra S22 drops “only” of 32 % on this same test.

The good news is that it prevents the phone from overheating. With an amplitude of temperature of only 17 degrees, Samsung masters its subject.

That said, after several weeks of testing, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 knows no slowdown on a daily basis, which is reassuring despite the theoretical tests. The observation is similar if you want to run gourmet games. We submitted Fortnite Mobile to him which turned very well with the maximum graphic presets and 30 images per second. Under these conditions, the game was fluid, despite a slightly embarrassing heating on the upper part of the phone after 10 minutes of play. It is worse than the ZenFone 9 equipped with the same SOC, but the Asus phone does not fold in half !

Regarding the performance of the Z Flip 4, remember that they will satisfy the vast majority of users. Only the most “hardcore” players will not find themselves. For all the others, you can go there with your eyes closed, the last folding of Samsung is perfectly reactive on a daily basis.

Interface: Oneui folds in half

We no longer present the excellent Oneui interface of Samsung, here in its version 4.1.1, which perfectly completes Android 12 on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The phone being folding and equipped with two screens, the Korean manufacturer offers features taking advantage of this specificity.

You can choose to configure the phone to answer a call directly by opening the phone and close it to end it.

But the most useful feature is undoubtedly the possibility of taking photos with the two cameras modules without opening the phone thanks to the small screen that serves as a viewfinder. To do this, press the switching button twice. You can then go from one camera module to the other from a simple movement to take photos or videos with the Grand Angle or the Ultra-Grand-Angle. Portrait mode is also part.

The main screen is not to be outdone, with the return of the famous “Flex” mode which allows to take advantage of the double display of the screen when the latter is folded at right angles. Some applications natively do so. This is the case of the camera, the Samsung calendar, the gallery, Google Meet, VLC or YouTube. For the others, it will be necessary to “force” this mode in the parameters.

When you do, the application will be displayed on the upper part of the screen. The lower part will display a series of shortcuts to display notifications, take a screenshot, adjust the brightness as well as the volume. The last option transforms the lower part of the screen. A much less intuitive option than pressing the upper part of the screen directly with your finger. While waiting for more and more developers to take advantage of this hybrid display, Samsung gives us the right tools to use it, even if this is still far from being perfect.

Photo: Good performance, but a remarkable absence

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is equipped with two camera modules on the back and one at the front:

Great angle and ultra-large angle

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is less well equipped in photography than other high -end smartphones from Samsung like Galaxy S22 Ultra or the Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, it is doing very well thanks to the software processing applied to the photos by the Korean manufacturer.

We find the bright colors characteristics of the rendering offered by Samsung. Without being very realistic, they have the merit of flattering the eye. The dive of the clichés is excellent, especially in the center. We also note that colorimetric continuity is ensured between the high angle module and the ultra-large angle. We grant him an additional point for his good dynamic management. Even in complex situations, HDR mode manages to properly unclog the shadows to offer a very balanced result.

Unsurprisingly, the ultra-wide-angle module is less good with less luminous shots and a visible deformation in the corners. Always practical in certain situations and offering photos despite everything usable, this module is clearly not in terms of what is expected on this price range.

Digital zoom

In the absence of a telephoto, we must use the digital zoom. The quality is very well preserved in X2, even until X4 thanks to a control of the mastered image. Beyond that, it is not catastrophic, but we are light years from the impressive zoom of the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

By night

Despite larger sensors, the night shots of Z Flip 4 are not radically different from those taken by its predecessor. That being said, we must admit that the result is successful, especially if you activate the night mode which brings a lot more light and details, at the cost of a longer exposure time. The observation is even more blatant on the ultra-large-angle, although the latter tends to whiten the yellow light that lights up the scene.

Portrait and selfies

The portrait mode that uses the Grand-Angle sensor is honorable, as you can see in the photos of the crazy hair doll. Despite its errors, the cutting is more than correct given the difficulty in isolate all the parts of the subject compared to the background.

The first selfie is made with the front camera of 10 megapixels. The result is good, but the background blur very flattened. The other selfies are made with the main camera module using the second screen once the phone is folded. We immediately see the difference in the details and the quality of the background blur. On the other hand, difficult not to see your hand when you take pictures with the ultra-large-angle module.

Videos

The Z Flip 4 allows you to film up to 4K at 60 i/s using the main camera module. You can also film yourself in selfie with the folded phone. Under its conditions, impossible to film beyond the 30 i/s in 4K, which is already not bad. The “super stability” mode works very well, but this time limits the videos to full HD to 30 i/s.

Autonomy and load

Autonomy was one of the black dots of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Samsung attacked this year by equipping the Z Flip 4 with a larger battery. Thus, the battery goes from 3300 to 3700 mAh. The versatile 01Lab’s versatile autonomy test is final, the Z Flip 4 wins four hours of autonomy, which is not negligible.

Same observation on video autonomy which goes from 8 hours and 29 minutes to 12 hours and 21 minutes. A real gain which allows the range of Z Flip to go from a “very bad” autonomy to “very correct”. Indeed, the Z Flip 4 is far from breaking records, but can now be used calmly for a day without fear of ending dry at the end of the afternoon.

Samsung also improves load speed that goes from 15W to 25W. Again, it’s much better, but we can’t really qualify this as “fast charge” in 2022. Count almost an hour and a half to completely recharge the phone. Only the Z Flip 3 and the iPhone 13 Pro are worse on this price range.
