Since 2020, Samsung has unveiled three new Galaxy S each year. Rebelote in 2022 with the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra. After laying our hands on the most luxurious of them, we made the smallest model our main smartphone. Always sold from 859 euros, it remains in frontal competition with the iPhone 13, available, from 909 euros. To maintain this “small format”, Samsung made more concessions compared to the ultra version. But the failure of the Korean manufacturer to provide a stable processor makes him lose precious points in his battle against the iPhone 13.

The perfect compact

Visually, Samsung knows how to do it and takes up almost line for the copy of last year. The integration of the camera modules was not revised as on the ultra version, but it was not as necessary. As in 2021, its plastic back will make you doubt as the differences in front of the glass seem tiny. The finishes are excellent and the grip pleasant. The greatest evolution in terms of design finally lies in the contours of the device. They are now aluminum. To the eye, the detail hits even if progress, overall, remains tiny. But the great strength in our opinion of this 2022 vintage remains its compactness. With a 6 screen.1 inches and its featherweight of 168 grams, the Galaxy S22 is one of the smallest smartphones on the market with, on paper, few sacrifices. We will see later in this test that it is actually not devoid of it.

The quality of the screen is there

Since we mentioned the sacrifices, know that Samsung continues to offer a 1080p screen. Information that could seem scandalous in 2022 and yet, given the size of the screen, the density of 422 pixels per point is far from being shameful. Even if the exceptional brightness of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is not reached, with an average of 875 cd/m², the S22 is placed at the top of the basket in its price category. Even in extreme luminosity conditions, the screen is clearly visible and keeps its superb. The adaptive image frequency up to 120 Hz is always there, which provides certain comfort of use.

As usual, Samsung produces quality screens, but realizes a fairly doubtful colors. Default configured, we measured a Delta E at 7.34 on the S22. Recall that the more this figure is close to 1, the more realistic the colors, it gives you an idea of ​​the gap … The Korean manufacturer knows how to offer fairly realistic colors. The proof, it offers in its settings to adjust the screen on the “natural” mode. Our Delta E measure by our laboratory then drops to 2.68, a more satisfactory figure.

One UI 4.1: Always on top

A quick word on the operating system, one UI 4.1 is there and we reconfirm that it is one of the best mobile bones of the moment. Capable of relieving our hands on the biggest models, on this very compact format, it is really happiness. Use with one hand at all circumstances made possible by the 6.1 inch screen honors the qualities of this overlay.

A amazing pocket camera

So far, the S22 has distinguished itself quite little from its predecessor. Regarding photography, Samsung has worked as well.

The main sensor, 24 mm equivalent, is now 50 megapixels against 12 last year. The idea here is to have a lot of pixels to allow the system to collect a maximum of information and to create a better shot. To be frank, we have not seen a real improvement compared to last year. Let us specify all the same that the photos made using this sensor remain in what is better today. We note all the same that the colorimetry of the photos is a little more realistic and that the management of the dynamic beach has improved.

It was time, but Samsung finally offers a real equivalent telephoto lens 70 mm. The Galaxy S21 offered a slightly bizarre mixture with a 64 MP sensor, while being equivalent 29 mm. We suddenly had a half-numeric zoom, half-optical not really up to the reputation of Korean.
And now are we filled ? Yes ! Especially since the shots are successful with good light conditions, but also at night.

This year, Samsung has communicated a lot on the night photo. We also had the opportunity to test the ultra S22 and it is true that the results on the main sensor and the X3 optical zoom are good. Here, same observation. The situations where these two sensors will drop you at night are far from being legion. We still have the impression that it is a bit less good than on the ultra S22, but frankly, at 859 euros, we are not going to do the difficult.

You will note that the ultra-wide-angle sensor has not yet been mentioned, 13 mm equivalent. The reason is quite simple, it is not as satisfactory as its two accomplices. It offers a correct day day, nothing more. At night, it is difficult to use it. Sometimes you have to do it several times to succeed in having a net profit. It’s a shame because if we omit this point, the Galaxy S22 is a most versatile pocket camera on the market. And its small size, compatible with all the pockets (yes, it’s important !), will make you want to take it everywhere.

Not even: the manufacturer has made the decision not only not to offer this charger in the box, but above all to restrict the smallest of the S22 to 25W ! The duel against the iPhone 13 is lost

Positioned at a fairly close price (859 euros for the S22, 909 euros for the iPhone 13), and with the same screen size, we had decided to oppose the Galaxy S22 and the iPhone 13 in a dedicated box. To be completely frank, apart from operating system considerations, before using the two devices for 10 days, we thought that the versatility in photography of the Galaxy S22 would have allowed him to take the advantage. And in fact, you have more photographic possibilities. But this concern for autonomy and heating seems to us too important for the Korean to prevail. The iPhone 13 is not perfect, but it offers something more than Galaxy S22: Serenity. No need to push the duel further, the apple brand wins this duel.

In February 2022, Samsung drew up a new armada of high -end smartphones, which are the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra. Three smartphones in different format – if not opposed with the ultra and its inspiration from the Note range -, and with sometimes diverse forces despite their membership of the same family.

A design and a grip at the pinnacle

Seven months later, I do not regret this notation. In terms of handling, he has been one of my most beautiful companions in recent years. Its small format is very practical to use it with one hand or store it in a small pocket, without being afraid of dropping it by going up or by bicycle – whether I practice a lot.

Its weight of 167 grams is also a significant strong point. The phone is almost forgotten when stored in your pants, and above all, it does not cause discomfort if you use it several tens of minutes on your sofa or lying in your bed.

Race result: even Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection has given way to make way for a fragmented back. Aluminum edges have suffered over time, while many scratches appeared on the screen. A word of advice if you hold your S22: protect it. For the rest, it is in my opinion a faultless.

Very beautiful photos, an X3 optics with small onions

If there is a sensor with which I like to have fun on high -end smartphones, this is the optical sensor offering a zoom x2, x3, x5 or even x10 depending on the model. That of the Galaxy S22 is a 10 megapixel X3 telephoto lens opening at f/2.4. It was probably this sensor that I used the most during my test.

For what ? Because it is with a sensor that I consider having taken the most beautiful photos, whether it is landscapes, food or portraits, with or without Bokeh effect. This X3 Optics offers very good performance thanks to a very good level of stuck stored and still saturated colors, a trademark of Samsung.

The results are only all the more beautiful.

The big angle of 50 megapixels (f/1.8), the ultra large angle of 12 megapixels (f/2.2) And the 10 megapixel selfie sensor do not have to be ashamed and brought me full satisfaction according to the situations in which I needed them. For the scenes with a sunset, I happened to take it several times in order to adjust the development and the level of exhibition, to obtain the desired result.

Conclusion: If you are looking for good photos with a phone that is sometimes below 700 euros on certain e-commerce sites, you have an excellent candidate there, with photographic versatility and images that will flatter your retina. Although at this little game, the Pixel 6 Pro clearly has its say, but at a price more elitist.

Software and performance, good and less good

The software part is ensured by one UI 4, to whom we have little to blame in terms of functionalities, practical appearance or global look. On the other hand, the fluidity of certain animations or the transition from one application to another sometimes lacked fluidity, especially during a multitasking session.

Overall, a point of disappointment will remain through my throat: on a smartphone initially sold 800 euros, I expected a 100 % fluid experience, even after seven months of use. This is not completely the case. Let us hear: Most of the time, the whole remained clear.

Where the Galaxy S22 fishing is at the processor level. The exynos 2200 is a real thorn in the foot, especially in the heating level. In summer, the phone was on the verge of burning my fingers when I used it for both reading music, watching a trip on Google Maps and answering friends.

In general, the S22 began to heat far too quickly for sometimes conventional tasks performed simultaneously. The Exynos 2200 SoC has not really had its place in such a setting: we hope with all my heart that Samsung will set its sights on the Snapdragon processors for the next generation of Galaxy S.

Not being a mobile gamer, I did not push the chip to his climax during a session Fortnite For example. But according to our February 2022 test, the Galaxy S22 was clearly lagging behind on the graphic part, in particular.

Everything is not to be thrown in the trash either. It is important here to salute Samsung software monitoring. About every month, a security correction was deployed on my phone, which is after all reassuring. Autonomy and recharge, it is a big no

Until now, my return of experience about the Galaxy S22 is relatively positive. On a daily basis, the autonomy of S22 was a real problem. Too many were the times when the energy bar approached 20 or 15 %dangerously … while the evening started barely. Speaking of charge precisely, the time is not at the party: what a tare, in 2022 and for a smartphone as high -end, to be limited to a power of 25 W, when most competitors climb at least at 33 W, if not 65 or 120 W. Without forgetting the fact that Samsung does not provide any compatible charger in the box.

But even with a compatible block, the time spent recharging your phone seems too long. An all the more prejudicial fact having regard to the starry autonomy here proposed by the S22. If the autonomy is low, we expect at least to recharge the phone in no time. This is clearly not the case.

To summarize: the autonomy and slow load of the Galaxy S22 are its two main weak points, which could put off some and some in search of more enduring phones. You do not imagine how much the Asus Zenfone 9-one of its competitors-brought me a beautiful and pleasant puff of oxygen on this criterion.

What a review after 7 months of use ?

The overall balance of the seven months spent with the Galaxy S22 remains globally positive, but tainted by a disabled autonomy on a daily basis and a charging power too low to start again in just a few minutes. These two points were particularly frustrating, if not annoying in the long run.

The Galaxy S22 also fishs at the heating level, too marked because of a processor – the Exynos 2200 – far from being up to our expectations. Fortunately, the excellent grip, the exquisite design, the magnificent screen, the balanced software experience and the photographic versatility of the phone rabiboche us.
