In summary: the list of powerful electric motorcycle models is lengthening. We already have dozens. And in most cases, they are very serious.

If you were looking for a powerful electric motorcycle in 2020, you had the choice between 34 models. Today, a dozen new electric models of more than 15 hp appeared on the market.

Faced with this unprecedented diversity, how to find your way around ?

If you landed here, it’s that you are as lost as me.

You may have decided that your next motorcycle would be electric, but you are afraid of being mistaken.

For good reason: the manufacturers are for the majority very young (only a few years), and the price of their bikes makes decision -making fairly delicate.

So I decided to analyze all the powerful electric motorcycle models available today on the market. Then I listed and classified them, so that we can see clearly again.

I obviously did this work as part of the design of my own electric motorcycle prototype. But I told myself that it could also help you see more clearly in this magma.

The design of my electric motorcycle is advancing pretty well, and even if powerful electric motorcycles have a lot of potential, I seriously plan to go to a 125 equivalent.

But there is a question that I cannot answer: What autonomy should this motorcycle have ?

The different types of electric motorcycles

First of all, we will have to agree on the terms.

It would not come to anyone’s mind to reveal a Bugatti Veyron and a Renault Twingo in the same ranking. And you already know (because you have read the introduction), we are only interested in the category “powerful electric motorcycle”.

But what exactly is a powerful electric motorcycle ?

The different powers and the different permits

I do not teach you, motorcycles (with electric or thermal propulsion) are available in a very wide variety of powers.

The term “motorcycle” indeed brings together as much the small 50 of your adolescence, as the 1000 with which you crossed Corsica.

And as things are well done, you need a different permit to drive these motorcycles.

It is also on these different permits that I rely to segment the motorcycle market, in order to make coherent groups. And there are 4 motorcycle permits.

  • AM license: This one, it is obtained at the same time as the B license and the BSR. This permit authorizes to drive on motorcycles whose maximum power is 4 kW, or a maximum displacement of 50 cc with a maximum speed of 45 km/h.
  • A1 permit: This permit authorizes to drive on motorcycles whose power does not exceed 11 kW (15 horses) and 125 cm3. There are exceptions but they are tiring, and this is not the subject of the day.
  • A2 permit: This authorizes to roll on motorcycles whose power does not exceed 35 kW.
  • License A: This is the Grail, the one that does not display any limits. Sky is the limit!

If this reminder is boring, it is nonetheless useful.

Because it allows me to divide motorcycles into 3 categories:

  1. Those who do not require any particular permit (motorcycles 50 cm3),
  2. Those that involve at least training (motorcycles of 125 cm3),
  3. and those that require a special license (powerful motorcycles, more than 15 horses).

Then just use these 3 categories to segment electric motorcycles.

Here we are going to focus on the last category, the one that brings together so -called “powerful” electric motorcycles.

But I did the same ranking work on the other two categories. You can therefore find that of equivalents 125 here, and that of electric motorcycles 50 per there.

that’s a good thing done.

After this snake stroke, I therefore have around thirty powerful electric motorcycles to analyze and classify, the best in the least good.

Thirty electric motorcycles ..

I am no longer very of course at this time right now.

Because if I look at my Excel spreadsheet, I realize that the most powerful of these motorcycles develops a power of 160 kW against 19 kW for the least powerful. A report of 8 separates these two motorcycles, which everything opposes.

Putting them in the same ranking therefore amounts to comparing a 3 -year -old child with a rugby player.

So I have to subdivide this ranking if I want it to be relevant and really help you. And I have my little idea for that.

It is enough that I realize that a sports motorcycle has not Nothing To do with an all-terrain motorcycle.

As simply as that. Because on a motorcycle, it is the use that is king.

So I created 6 subcategories, for each of the uses that can be made of a powerful electric motorcycle:

  • and luxurious

It is therefore time to move on to what really interests us: the classification that will determine the best powerful electric motorcycle, by use.

Powerful & versatile electric motorcycle: the classification

This use is that to which the majority of electric motorcycles and thermal motorcycles wish to answer.

The idea is then to adapt to such a large number of conditions of conditions: the device, the blocked avenues, the winding country roads, the slender national.

This is the praise of roadster, This type of motorcycle which represents at least half of the motorcycles on the market.

We will therefore analyze in this subcategory all the electric motorcycles which hate making sacrifices and specializing. In that, we will see that they also undergo sacrifices, on their inability to be excellent in a field.

What powerful electric motorcycle to buy on the segment roadster ?

This is the ranking that I would make roadsters Electric:

  • Eva Ribelle d’Energica dominates the classification,
  • followed by an amazing Luna of Tarform,
  • herself followed by the Strike Carbon of Lightning.
  • At the foot of the podium, we find the Zero Sr/s of Zero Motorcycles,
  • Then the Eva Esseesse9+ of Energica,
  • The Zero SR/F of Zero Motorcycles only harvested a disappointing sixth position.
  • Then comes the EGO+ of Energica,
  • then the Harley-Davidson livewire, which we hoped for better placed.
  • At the bottom of the ranking, the Motorcycles Savic alpha is like it can,

What must be drawn from this ranking is simple: Eva Ribelle d’Energica is decidedly impressive. If we are looking for a powerful and versatile electric motorcycle, it is resolutely the best.

Behind her, we note the presence of a short news that has not yet been proven: the luna. It owes its place to its good environmental note, better than all other electric motorcycles in this ranking.

But what is also to be remembered is the disappointing positions of the SR/F and the Livewire.

These two motorcycles, which are however very good, suffer from an overly high price, and from an overload time too substantial for the roadster Sportsman from Zero Motorcycles.

They are no less excellent options, but this classification proves that if these two manufacturers do not make an effort, their privileged status may no longer be enough.

Powerful & urban electric motorcycle: the classification

Everything is in the title.

This use is that which consists in admitting that electric motorcycles are for the moment much more suitable in town than elsewhere.

An urban electric motorcycle (or city dweller, I will use the two terms) is therefore the type of moderately powerful motorcycles which prefer maneuverability at the speed of speed.

And in this ranking too, Zero Mortocycles is not as conquering as what we would have thought.

As for the subcategory of versatile motorcycles, take stock:

  • It is followed by Fuell’s FLLOW, which I like little but whose performance is remarkable.
  • The Omega of Savic Motorcycles closes this podium, and I salute its relevance.
  • Zero Sr de Zero Motorcycles must be satisfied with the chocolate medal,
  • While the Motorcycles after -sales service delta is found in fifth position,
  • and that the Urban Classic of Evoke Motorcycles logically closes walking.

Again, this ranking of electric city cars is not favorable to Zero Motorcycles: the Zero SR, which nevertheless displays electrifying performance, only obtains fourth place.

She pays dearly her elephant recharging time and her highest price of the subcategory.

It’s a reality that is not easy to swallow when you have always rolled in thermal, but electric motors are intrinsically more efficient than thermal engines.

It is then not surprising that some electric motorcycles choose to orient themselves towards sports use. And they are not mistaken, because here, it is not autonomy that is queen, but speed and acceleration.

This is the hard law of competitions: if you make sure you win, you have to be the best everywhere !

Powerful & road electric motorcycle: the classification

This use is that of those who want to drive over very long distances with their motorcycle.

They are right, going on a motorcycle trip is an exhilarating experience. But for the moment, with their modest autonomy, the electric motorcycles are quite poorly responded to this. And we will see him quite painfully in the rest of this article.

Road category: what is the best powerful electric motorcycle ?

There are only three of them, so it will be fast:

  • The 6061 of Evoke Motorcycles exceeds the competition and takes the trophy,
  • Tacita Turismo T-Cruise arrives in second position, which is also the penultimate position,
  • and the T-Cruise Urban of Tacita does not deserve better than this last place.

By establishing this classification, I validate what I thought of road use for electric motorcycles: They don’t know how to do.

But I was surprised by the 6061, which could be the start of a change.

Powerful & luxurious electric motorcycle: the classification

With their disproportionate prize, luxury motorcycles cannot box in the same category as others. Especially because of the very unfavorable balance for them between performance and price.

Indeed, for an often twice higher price, they display performance not necessarily better.

So I was forced to create this subcategory.

Contre-Coeur, because I am not a large customer of luxury motorcycles, whose utility I find very limited. But it takes everything to do a world, isn’t it ?

Besides, this subcategory is only operated by 3 electric motorcycles … not really convincing.

Powerful electric motorcycle & off-road: the classification

This use, as its name says it quite well, is to roll everywhere.

Ground of earth, pebbles, roots, mud, everything is allowed. And there is no doubt that if we could roll on the moon, electric motorcycles would already be on the file.

We will see later that this use is perfectly covered by powerful electric motorcycles.

And in a fairly bright way, they do not go to war, because there are so many sub-categories in this subcategory that everyone finds their account. So that I have the impression that none of the seven models analyzed respond to the same use. It must be said that in off-road, there are as many uses as bikers.

Here, making a classification is useless. I can only make a quick summary of the sub-uses to which all-terrain electric motorcycles on this list respond.

There are 6 – As many motorcycles as uses:

  • The Enduro subcategory: T-Race Enduro de Tacita,
  • That of the Rallye-Raid: the T-Race Rally of Tacita,
  • Motocross: T-Race Cross de Tacita,

Now we understand much better why I avoided comparing them to each other.

In conclusion: the powerful electric motorcycle has a lot of potential

For the writing of this article, I had to familiarize myself with all the powerful electric motorcycles present on the market.

And I was very pleasantly surprised by most of them.

Even if they are not all as well known for the moment as the models of the Zero-Harley-Energica triptych, they are very serious. And many new manufacturers have the ambition to dethrone the members of the triptych.

Besides, I remember several lessons:

  • The first is the predominance of versatile use and urban use for electric motorcycles (they respond better and better, and with a competitiveness that is close to their thermal counterparts – it’s very good omen);
  • The second is the confirmation that autonomy remains a brake to align with thermal motorcycles (so that when an electric motorcycle rubs in road use, the result is really not up to it) ;
  • Finally, the third lesson is that the electric motorcycle market is not yet mature (I have obtained proof with the lack of environmental exemplarity almost all of the motorcycles studied-there is definitely a very big blow to play here).

I intend to change things about this last point.

Because it is in our common interest to get closer to an environmental exemplarity as possible for our favorite motorcycles.

To get there, only one solution: put your hands in the citch.

There are always more many of us cultivating on the subject, to become real experts in electric motorcycles and no longer let ourselves have by marketing speeches.

We must always understand the environmental impact of electric motorcycles, so as not to reproduce the same errors as (almost) all the manufacturers we mentioned here.

And we must always think, study and design electric motorcycles that meet both relevant use And to a very real climatic emergency.

What electric motorcycle has the greatest autonomy ?

Energica does a great job on the autonomy of her models. All their models display among the largest autonomy on the market.

Obviously it is not excluded that they are soon outdated by some ambitious actors like Alrendo or Evoke Motorcycles, but for the moment, Energica remains the most serious manufacturer on this subject.

Which powerful electric motorcycle to choose ?

According to my research, there is only one “real” Enduro electric motorcycle: the T-Race Enduro of Tacita. And since it is the only electric enduro of more than 11 kW, it is necessarily the best.

What permit to drive an electric motorcycle ?

To roll on an electric 125 equivalent, only the A1 license is necessary (as well as a short training). But for electric motorcycles of more than 11 kW, you will either need permit 12, or permit A (depending on the powerful of your motorcycle).

What method I used to analyze and classify each powerful electric motorcycle ?

To classify the thirty motorcycles that you could discover in this article, I used a method that is as rigorous as possible.

First, I wrote at least a 1,300 words (3 A4 pages) file for each of the motorcycles mentioned later. In this way, I got to know the whole of these electric motorcycles.

Then I noted them according to 5 criteria.

Performances

They bring together the power, the torque, the capacity of the battery and the autonomy, the recharging time, the top speed, the passage time from 0 to 100 km/h, the weight and geometry.

I compared each of these characteristics to the average of the subcategory, to give a impartial note.

Design

I tried somehow to objectify something very subjective.

The use

It consists in verifying that the motorcycle responds intelligently to targeted use.

The price

I compared it to the average price of the subcategory in order to have an objective note.

The environmental impact

The motorcycle should not be content to emit less CO2 than thermal motorcycles (because between us, it is not complicated).

It was then simply to make an average of 5 notes obtained, to have a generally judicious average. Because thanks to this general average, what matters is to be good everywhere.

For example, a very efficient but very expensive motorcycle does not make the weight in the face of an efficient but much cheaper motorcycle. And that’s exactly what I was looking for.

What a permit for an electric motorcycle ?

Electric motorcycles follow the same regulations as a conventional motorcycle. Thus, a 50cc equivalent will only claim an AM license for teens over 14 years old or the B license provided that 2 years of driving and a 7 -hour practical training for the new permits obtained after March 2011. People born before January 1, 1988 do not need a license for electric motorcycles 50cc.

In 125cc equivalent, it all depends on the power of the vehicle as always. For urban typed electric motorcycles with a maximum power of 11 kW or 15 hp, the simple A1 license will suffice. Between 11 and 35 kW, it will be necessary to pass the A2 permit. And finally, the motorcycle permit (A) is required for all large -displaced electric motorcycles with a power greater than 35 kW.

What ecological bonus for electric motorcycles ?

Like electric scooters, electric motorcycles benefit from certain financial aid. Less than 2kW of power, you can benefit from € 100 within the limit of 20% of the purchase price. For 2kW or more, you enjoy 250 € of aid per kWh of battery. The bonus amount must not exceed 27% of the purchase price of the electric motorcycle and it is capped at € 900
