It is about to become much more difficult to recommend Google’s flagship smartphones, Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro . Not because one or the other of the phones is bad – quite the opposite, in fact. But because the 6a pixel is available at the order from July 21.

I have been using the Pixel 6A for two weeks, replacing the Pixel 6 Pro and as my main Android device. There are a few features that Google cut to bring the pixel 6A to half the price of its big brother, but the overall experience has not suffered at all.

Pixel 6a takes up the same design as 6 and 6 pro. The rear bar is the place where the two cameras oriented backwards are located-a 12 megapixel main device and a 12 megapixel ultra-large-and the flash. The bar has a slight bump that prevents the phone from being placed flat on a desk, but keeps it in a slightly inclined position.

At the front is an OLED screen of 6.1 inch of 2,400 x 1,080 FHD+ with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Centered at the top of the screen is an 8 megapixel front camera. On the right edge of the phone are the volume switch and the power button. The lower edge hosts a USB-C port, and the left edge the SIM card housing. There is no headphone jack on the 6a pixel, something that was included on the Pixel 6 and the Pixel Pro 6.

Speaking of the edges, the 6a uses the same design with flat edges as the standard pixel 6, while the 6 pro has curved vertical edges which make it look thinner and narrower than it is actually.

The 6.1 -inch screen is slightly smaller than that 6.4 inch of Pixel 6 and that 6.7 inches from the Pixel 6 Pro, which gives it the smallest size of the three. At first, I had the impression that the 6a was almost too small. I prefer the size of the 6 pro for daily use, but it can be difficult to manage for one hand use, even with the curved edge screen. But the more I used it, the more I was convinced, the size of the 6a seeming to me just as it should.

The material used outside the phone was one of the points that allowed the manufacturer to reduce the cost. The screen is a Gorilla Glass 3, which is probably not as robust as the Gorilla Glass Victus used on 6 and 6 pro. The 6a has the same E -shaped aspect in polished aluminum, but the technical sheet indicates that the 6A has an alloy frame, while the 6 and the 6 pro have aluminum frames with different finishes.

Finally, the 6a has an index of resistance to dust and water IP67 instead of IP68 for the more expensive models.

Performance, camera and battery life

Inside the Pixel 6a is the same processor as that of 6 and 6 pro, Google Tensor, 6 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage. Memory was also one of the 6A saving points, but I did not notice any problems with 6 GB compared to the 12 GIS of memory of 6 pro.

There is a 4,410mAh battery which was more than sufficient to spend a full day of use. In fact, I took the Pixel 6A on a short trip to Portland, Oregon, where I was constantly looking for the next place to eat, get indications, take pictures or to call a lyft, and I have never been nervous at the idea of ​​lacking battery during the day. The battery life is not a problem on the 6a pixel.

The fingerprint reader was a point of friction for some when the pixel 6 and 6 pro were launched, and I can say that I had no problem with the 6a sensor. To be fair, the only time I had problems with the 6 pro sensor was when I tried to unlock the phone in direct sunlight – it was frequently failed.

But Portland was sunny during my visit and I voluntarily tested the fingerprint sensor of the 6a several times in direct sunlight without any problem.

During the first two days of testing, there were a few cases where I had the impression that the 6a took too long to open an application or go from one screen to another. I do not know if I expected it to work more slowly than the 6 pro and that my mind played tricks on me, or if the phone was busy optimizing in the background, but since then, the 6a pixel works without any problem or slowness on my part. I wanted to launch the Benchmark Geekbench 5 application to see how the 6A score is compared to other Android phones and the iPhone 13, but the Play Store listing does not currently allow me to install it. I will update this post as soon as I can officially install the application and execute it.

Google has made big changes to the 6A with regard to rear cameras, always to reduce the overall cost. The double camera of 12 megapixels, on paper at least, seems to take good photos, without being excellent, compared to the specifications of the camera of the 6 pro (main 50MP, ultra -wide 12MP, and 48MP telephotal).

However, I took a large number of photos in the past two weeks with the 6A and most of them are superb. There are a few photos where he had trouble with color saturation, but as you can see in the image of the roses below, it is a difficult image for any camera.
