Peugeot E-2008: double blow and double cost
In three years, the Peugeot 2008 has attracted more than 700,000 customers in Europe. A nice score that makes him a superstar on the automotive market. To continue to seduce, the lion’s urban SUV has been the subject of a large restyling that we have already told you about here and which is accompanied on the technical side by the introduction of a new 100% electric engine. Specific electric block made in France (in Trémery en Moselle) and battery with increased capacity (+ 4kWh or 54 kWh raw) allow you to claim, under the optimistic WLTP approval cycle, to cross the 400 km of autonomy barrier. So much for the presentation.
But the arrival of this proposal did not send the old 136 hp/50 kWh version to the hospice, the two cohabiting in the catalog and being available with all the finishes with obviously tighter prices for the most modest. So you have to favor the latter or pay more to get better ? Responses with our supporting measures.
Performances: not day and night !
You should not read a technical card of electric car in the same way as that of a thermal. If power is obviously important information to give an idea of the performance potential of a model and still makes sense for those with pistons, connecting rods and other valves, this data is less important for a “watture”. Indeed, it is especially the couple distributed immediately that must be taken into account and concerning the two versions of the E-2008, there is a draw: 260 nm on both sides ! In fact, logically, the performances are very close (+0.7 s on 0 to 100 km/h) as we were able to check with our measurements on the Montlhéry circuit. And above all are already largely sufficient for the basic version of 136 hp, especially in recovery from 80 to 120 km/h (+1.3 or 7S), a guarantee of security during the overtaking. And by the way, you should also know that the maximum power of the two engines is only available in sport mode. In normal, it’s only 100 hp for the basic version and 136 hp for the new version ..

A price gap not so important so ..

In our opinion, making the effort is worth it. First of all because if it will not bring anything on a daily basis, the higher autonomy, especially on the highway of the E-2008 156 hp is an asset not to be overlooked with the possibility of stopping every 200 km, Or around 2 hours of road when the break is essential when the basic version makes motorway escapes more complicated . Peugeot E-2008 test (2023): more powerful, with 400 km of autonomy, but is really better ?
What is the new version of Peugeot E-2008 is worth. To make our own opinion, we tested it on Andalusia roads.
Peugeot’s “little” electric crossover arrives halfway through its young existence. In the automobile, this anniversary is often synonymous with a salvo of modifications which give rise to a restyled version of the car. The Peugeot E-2008 has just benefited and we were able to test the new version of this electric car. With a more powerful engine and a more efficient battery, is it the good surprise of this summer ?
Marketed in early 2020, the 2008 Peugeot is one of the brand’s greatest recent recent successes. The best -selling SUV in France, on the third European march on a European scale, he tackled the restyling stage with a certain apprehension. Even if the 100 % electric version, the one that interests us particularly, represents only 12 % of its sales, it benefits from all the improvements in the new version and wants to establish itself as a reference vehicle on its segment.
Design: an evolution at the margin
If there is one aspect on which Peugeot did not wish to take any risk, it is that of design. Its 2008 is a hit in sales and part of its success is due to its pleasant aesthetics. No need to take disproportionate risks with a look that would be out of the previous version.
It is essentially the front face that has changed, to adopt a slightly more sharp style, symbolized by the three claws as a light signature. The rims also evolve to adopt a style closer to the one that was revealed on the last 408. In terms of proportions, the little Peugeot SUV has not moved inch. His fans will not be surprised in any way.
On board: in continuity
The changes are even more subtle aboard this E-2008. The 3D i-Cockpit system which is an ô element of the recent Peugeot is in the game and even makes its interface evolve slightly. Indeed, the big interior change, the lion reserves it for its new 3008, scheduled for the end of the year and which will inaugurate a panoramic I-Cockpit with a large curved screen above the steering wheel.
In the meantime, on the E-2008, Peugeot is content to generalize the 10 inch screen (some versions had to be satisfied so far from a 7-inch display), and to offer a more powerful induction charger (15W against 5W previously). For our part, we always regret the fairly unlikely location of the driving modes selector which forces the driver to contort if he wants to go from eco mode in sport mode, for example. You will understand, the interior of the little French SUV has not really experienced a revolution. Again, there is a form of logic on the part of the brand engineers at the lion.
Under the hood: the real changes
The real interest of this restyling of the E-2008 is much less visible. It is under the hood. Indeed, it is the electric version of the model, which also exists in thermal, which has benefited from the greatest changes. These are located on the side of the motorcycle-propeller group, with the arrival of a new 156 hp engine and a larger battery (this goes from 50 to 54 kWh). Particularity of the engine of the E-2008: it is manufactured in France by e-motors, a co-company created between Nidec Leroy Somer and Stellantis. As for the increase in the size of the accumulator supplied by CATL, it is substantial, of course, but it allows Peugeot to claim more than 400 km (406 km precisely) of autonomy with its compact SUV. Do these developments really play on the driving performance of the E-2008 ? To find out, we took the wheel of the SUV on the Spanish roads around Malaga.
The Peugeot E-2008 on the road, it gives what ?
The driving position in E-2008 is quite comfortable, relaxed and immediately invites flexibility driving. We find in the electric crossover of Peugeot a concern inherent in the 3D icockpit, already noted on the other models of the brand, but which will essentially depend on the template of the pilot and its driving position. Indeed, for a few drivers, the double -flat steering wheel comes directly in the axis of the gaze, thus obstructing the view towards the lower part of the instrumentation screen. This is a problem noted by several users of brand vehicles and which is unfortunately without solution. The only way to check whether or not you are part of people likely to be embarrassed by the steering wheel position is to try the car in dealerships.
This point having been addressed, let us now move on to the driving performance of the small Peugeot SUV. These are relatively modest. Slight weight loss does not have the expected impact on its velocity. Admittedly, 0 to 100 km/h is not ashamed, but despite its 260 Nm of torque, the new 156 hp engine is not particularly lightning. Whatever, you will tell us, the E-2008 place is not on a circuit. Admittedly, but this sudden acceleration specific to electric cars could suggest better sensations on this new more muscular version.
On the other hand, we have not observed a blatant change on the chassis part of this new E-2008. The touch of driving, without being exceptional, is completely interesting and rather comfortable, which is particularly felt in urban driving. It is in town that the E-2008 is the most comfortable and it is also in this configuration that it is the most efficient in terms of consumption (we will come back).
Therefore, it is regrettable that Peugeot has not given more possibilities to the driver in terms of energy recovery. You will just have to be satisfied with a preset B mode which does not go as far as the car stopped. Slightly less comfortable in tight and higher speed curves, the E-2008 is nonetheless a car pleasant to drive and providing a good feeling of safety.
Autonomy: finally the 400 km !
This is one of the strongest arguments to go to the new E-2008. Thanks to a contained weight (allowed by better compactness of the batteries), the addition of a heat pump and a more efficient engine, the autonomy would have climbed 66 km from the previous version. Since the two vehicles use the same platform and similar equipment, this progression is quite stunning. But what about real life ?
Our fairly limited test in terms of diversity of roads will only provide a parcel answer to this question. At the end of a loop of around 300 km between town and national, our consumption (without any particular effort of ecoconduite) was 15.8 kWh/100 km. This performance is rather encouraging and suggests that the 400 km are actually possible … but in town only. This consumption is ultimately quite close to the values displayed by the previous version.
And as on the first E-2008, consumption grabs cheerfully as soon as speed increases. Also, we will undoubtedly have to complete this first test with a long autonomy test to have a more precise overview of the way in which Peugeot’s SUV manages its new battery.
Rapid recharge: always a weak point
It was already one of the weaknesses of the first E-2008 and it remains on this restyled version. Its rapid charging capacities are limited by the technical platform on which it was developed. Concretely, on a quick charging station in DC, you will be limited to 100 kW, which remains very modest and especially too low if you plan to swallow the kilometers. Peugeot will always be able to argue that some of its competitors offer still lower charging speeds, the fact remains that the market average is more at the level of the 130 kW, which can be translated in additional long minutes during Each highway stop.
Fortunately, the assessment is more satisfactory in continuous recharge. On this point, the E-2008 is quite in the market standard with a 7.4 kW connector of standard which can increase to 11 kW for an additional cost of 400 euros.
E-2008 in the face of competition ?
This new version of the E-2008 is billed about 1,500 euros more than the first 136 hp model. Given the type of improvement made, this price increase may seem reasonable. Admittedly, but it is quickly to forget that the previous version of the SUV was already displayed at a particularly salty price. Thus, the starting price of this new version is 41,600 euros, for the active version, the least equipped, and rises to 45,100 euros in GT version.
At this rate, the competitors of the E-2008 are quite impressive. You will have to be particularly convincing in the face of a 100 % electric Renault Mégane. And what about comparison with models 3 and models upper on all points compared to the Sochalien SUV.
Test verdict:
The new E-2008 is a continuation of the first version of 2020. Peugeot has limited risk taking to produce a pleasant, comfortable car to drive and progress on autonomy. Unfortunately, the French brand has not been able to erase the main defect of its compact SUV, namely its price. Even by playing the ecological bonus, the E-2008 finds itself faced with market references, Tesla Model 3 in mind, and this game there Peugeot will have a hard time making the weight.
