Over 5.2 billion users, some 2 billion sites … Internet statistics are dizzy. News, social networks, e-commerce, e-learning, etc., The contents have never been so numerous on the large canvas. A mine that is not without danger for young audiences. This is why specific software has been developed to protect these vulnerable targets: parental controls.

A text of law was also adopted in January 2022 in the National Assembly, making this system compulsory on all devices providing Internet access. A text justified by the use too infrequent to parental control. “Today, 57 % [parents] do not use it and almost a third does not even know it, a quarter finding it too complex “, explained the Secretary of State for Children and Families, Adrien TAQUET.

Too complex, this is precisely what can be said by observing closely all the solutions available on the market. In France, operators Orange, Free, SFR and Bouygues make available to their customers no less than 11 different parental checks, enough to get lost. We therefore invite you to see more clearly with a non -exhaustive selection. We have chosen to analyze in detail a unique parental control by operator, the most complete and relevant to our eyes. Note that parental controls are offered at relatively affordable prices.

Orange

Historic operator, Orange provides its customers with three different solutions: mobile parental control (reserved for its customers), Windows computer software only (open to all) and a premium offer called Xooloo Digital Coach (also reserved for customers Orange). It is this last solution that we will study with more attention.

Xooloo Digital Coach is not a house solution, this software is indeed published by Xooloo, a company based in Paris. The orange offer allows access to the software at the rate of € 3.50/month with the first month offered. “The promotion is reserved for customers subscribing for the first time this option or having terminated it for more than 12 months“, Specifies the operator.

To use this parental control, nothing could be simpler: just download the application to the computer (windows, macOS) or the smartphone (Android, iOS) of your offspring and to be guided. This parental control gives many relevant features. Rather judge: blocking the Internet connection by time slots, monitoring of the device’s use time, web protection against sensitive content, advisory notifications for children … The application is intuitive and establishes a peaceful dialogue Between the child and the parent. The goal here is to play pedagogy more than repression. The system is actually made up of three different applications: Xooloo Digital Coach for adolescents, Xooloo App Kids for children and Xooloo Parents dedicated to monitoring and management of features.

In summary, for a sum ultimately reasonable, this Orange partner offers correct functionalities and works to a reasoned use of new technologies.

SFR

On the SFR side, there are at least two different devices: parental control says “Regulatory” On mobile (accessible to SFR and Red Mobile customers) and the family premium parental control. We will look at the latter. Parental control of SFR Family is available for free to SFR Family customers; And for € 5/month (after a first month at € 1) for other firm customers.

Like its Orange counterpart, SFR Family is made up of three applications: SFR Family Coach, SFR Family Teens and SFR Family Kids. Family Coach allows you to manage the uses of your children and we will then install Family Teens or Family Kids according to the profile of the toddler.

Family Teens allows you to filter dangerous, violent websites, offering pornography and other content reserved for adults. It is used as well on phone (Android, iOS) as on computer (windows, macOS). Parents can configure internet connection planning, control apps installation, block unwanted contacts (Android only) and configure many options. Compatibility between the different operating systems is generally good, but several features remain reserved for Android.

The Family Kids application is intended only for Android users. This application for the little ones allows the user to surf a white list, understand a list of sites allowed beforehand. Purchases can also be blocked and planned time. Calls are limited to a list of authorized contacts, while photos are subject to a selection of parents. This space is indeed very secure, as SFR indicates, perhaps even a little too restrictive if it is used in the context of a parent/child dialogue that we want to appease in a climate of confidence.

Bouygues

Bouygues Telecom offers parental control for smartphone (Bouygues mobile customers), unit basic control (Bbox customers) and premium parental control, on which we will dwell. From its small name Qustodio, this software is offered to customers “Mobile package, bbox or 4G box offer”. For customers of a mobile plan, the price is € 5/month with the first month offered. If you have a Bbox, you will have to spend € 1 in the first month, then € 5/month.

Questodio is the product of the Spanish company Qustodio Technologies S.L., Based in Barcelona. It is easily installed on computer (windows and macOS) and on phone (Android and iOS). In the formula offered by Bouygues, five devices can be protected. It offers basic features and some bonuses. Questodio allows for websites and applications not intended for children, surveillance of online activities, as well as connection time planning. As a bonus, you can locate your children in real time. An SOS button in case of danger is also available. On Android, parents have the possibility of consulting their child’s calls and SMS, a particularly intrusive option. The list of sites blocked by parental control can also be personalized. Like Xoolo Digital, the Bouygues solution seems reliable and just for the control of the digital uses of children.

Note : Digital is a media from the Unify group, which itself belongs to TF1 and Bouygues.

Free

Last from our list, but not to be out of surveillance by the parents, Free has a single real parental control, Free Angel. Quite aging, it seems intended (free) only for Windows users. On its website, free praising its application like the “Number 1 of free parental control software and second all software combined during tests carried out by Action Innocence”. Yes, but it was… in March 2008. We are not reassured about the features of such an application in 2022.

With Free Angel, we find the basic features, but sufficient for a child, namely a differentiation of profiles (child/adolescent), a white list of authorized sites, a black list of prohibited sites, as well as a web filter has a “Semantic analysis algorithm”. Planning of time spent in front of the screen is also available, as is a history of the websites visited by the child. Interesting and original feature: the possibility of configuring a data filter that should prevent your offspring from communicating personal information (name, address, telephone number, etc.).

In its child protection strategy, Free prefers visibly “Vigilance, pedagogy and dialogue”, As he indicates on his site, rather than sophisticated software. This choice is not very common, but has the merit of existing.

Network access planning for all

In addition, the four French operators make available to all boxes a functionality close to parental control. WiFi or Internet planning makes it possible to organize time slots and days of availability of the Internet at home. Some routers even allow personalized planning according to the various home devices. A fairly radical solution that can be effective in some cases. Likewise, operators’ TV decoders offer the possibility of configuring a parental code to access certain chains reserved for adults.

Parental control, a really useful solution ?

This is a question that can be futile after reading these lines. In 2022, the systematic use of parental control as a single child protection solution can indeed ask. Even if the latter is not exposed to sensitive content at home or on his phone, he can very well view images, videos or texts of a sensitive nature on the computer, tablet or smartphone of a classmate. Television also offers a significant risk of risk.

Should we throw the baby with the bath water ? No. Parental control can be a complementary solution to the advice and the pedagogy you will offer to your child. In the opinion of many specialists, dialogue is essential and it is important to establish a share of confidence in the child, even if we seek to limit risks and supervise its use of technology.

For information, the site of the E-Enfance/3018 association and the I protect my child, information and support platform for government digital parenting, provide many relevant advice for parents who wish to protect and best educate their heirs to digital uses.
