The Opel Corsa being now the German cousin of the Peugeot 208 just haloed by the car title of the year, rightly so, we leave with a rather favorable a priori for this first handling The electrified version of the Corsa. The electric 208 had appeared to us as one of the most friendly variants in the range, no reason for the Corsa e to assert the same qualities. Namely, very correct performance, provided by the same 136 hp engine, and driving pleasure served by a well -calibrated chassis.

No reason either to touch the spirit of the car: where the Peugeot capitalizes on a very strong style, all in angles and edges to the point of depriving itself of customers refractory to originality, the Corsa maintains its discretion. Much more classic, to get angry with anyone ! There is still a point of convergence: just like the E-208, the Corsa E takes care to hide its electric motorization. Zoé for example, as a model in its own right, follows the reverse approach.

Thus, apart from the widened tracks (12 m) and the barely elongated wheelbase (7 mm, obviously imperceptible) to leave a little room for the battery block (always 50 kWh of capacity like the E-208), only Some monograms distinguish the corsa e from its thermal counterparts. Not low-cost, but without special frills or luxury. No 3D display, nor worked style effects. The whole is rational, rather well equipped too. File maintenance, cruise control, emergency braking we read the panels are automatically present. Here, we are content as an option of a slightly dated digital instrumentation, it’s true (1.400 euros, on our elegance finish). Not essential, but be satisfied with a classic endowment, without digital escalation or XXL screens makes it possible to contain rates lower than that of the competition. The Corsa E thus begins at 30.650 euros (or 24.650 euros bonus of 6.000 euros deduced). Far from being cheap, the German is nevertheless competitive in the face of the E-208 (32.300 euros excluding bonus) or the Renault Zoé (32.000 euros in R110, less powerful). Not to mention the DS3 Crossback E-Tense (39.100 euros), which also shares the same engine as the Corsa e. Our upper elegance version, billed 2.000 euros more, adds mainly LED lighting, two-tone shade, the 7-inch media interface tactile.

On the road (but not too long)

Eyes closed (way of speaking), it would be difficult to perceive the difference between the two PSA urbanities with equivalent motorization. Aside from the driving position of course, quite conventional in the Opel and much less convoluted than the cockpit of the 208 which does not please all morphologies (small steering wheel, high perched meters). From the E-208, we find at the wheel of the Corsa e the same touch of the comfortable road and kept with rigor, without excess of firmness or movements unwelcome. As in the Frenchman, the suspensions were however firmed to support the overweight of batteries (345 kg all the same !)). Comfort hardly suffers, and the very low center of gravity reserves a good stability.

Despite its high weight (1.530 kg for a city car !), the Corsa E reveals an interesting agility and vigorous times. Autonomy, banal, disappoints as soon as we venture on a fast track.

The observation is worth in town as on the secondary network, where its agile behavior, dynamic just what it takes, reserves real approval. The lap times are there, also: 8.1 s from 0 to 100 km/h, and reminders sufficiently energetic to evolve on a fast track. We still have 260 Nm from the start. However, this vigor requires using sport mode, the only one to make it possible to operate the 136 hp promised. The rest of the time, the normal intermediate mode bridles power at 100 hp. Already more than enough to sneak in the traffic in Berlin and its surroundings, framework of our test. There, on the other hand, manifests itself one of the main ones (the only ?) True inconvenience of the car: variations in consistency of the brake pedal, depending on the state of charge and the use of energy recovery in deceleration. We go from a classic bite to a spongy pressure without warning. Just like with most electricity (or hybrids largely electrification).

Another observation, the autonomy announced at 337 km in WLTP cycle (in principle realistic), is rather around 260 km in the use in mixed route. Amply sufficient for the daily use practiced by the majority of electric drivers: regular journeys of 20 to 30 km. And confined to strictly city driving, using the recovery in B mode as well as possible, this Corsa e easily reaches 300 km without touching a socket. Not bad.

The 100 kW fast recharging is provided as standard … provided you have a nearby terminal. More classic, the load by Wallbox is limited to 11 kW on the Corsa E. It’s less than a zoé, compatible with 22kW.

At the end of our journey in the German capital, we noted an average consumption slightly greater than 18 kWh / 100 km. Correct, nothing more. Without effort of eco-driving, but we have taken care not to dwell on the highway. And even less on Autobahn at free speed, where the gauge falls visibly. Everything therefore confirms, as if necessary, that the corsa e reaches the limits of its versatility in the same way as any electric engine: just as coherent in urban areas. that she is not in her place outside this framework !

Energy management

Unusual thing, the Corsa E is standard compatible with the fast load, up to 100 kW, allowing to recharge 80 % of the battery in 30 minutes. Welcome advertisement, but which ultimately concerns few people with us, most of the drivers recharging at home on Wallbox (around 4:30 am for a full load) or simply on. This last solution is even the most practiced: unless you are a player, you never wait to go down the reserve to connect your car. A night of load on the plug of the garage is often sufficient. And more economical: PSA is not one of the partners of the Ionity network, it charges the fast load 0.79 € / kWh. Not given.
