Advertising, your content continues belowTwo years after the Fairphone 4, the Dutch company returns to the front of the stage with the Fairphone 5. This model has been improved on certain points, but it is always resolutely turned towards the future thanks to the modularity of its components.
Presentation
It has been almost 10 years since Fairphone, a Dutch company, prides itself on offering unique smartphones on the market. Models designed to last, offering the user the possibility of changing their parts himself, while respecting environmental constraints as much as possible. Adopting a fairphone is therefore part of an ethical and sustainable mode of consumption, as we would like to see more often.
This fifth model is in the same momentum as its predecessors. It also resembles Fairphone 4 released in 2021. Note that it is not possible to improve the Fairphone 4 using spare parts of the Fairphone 5.
To adopt the most recent ethical smartphone, you have to get your hands on the portfolio. This last model sees its launch price inflate at € 699 in its 8/256 GB version (€ 579 for the Fairphone 4 6/128 GB). This price may seem excessive with regard to the technical sheet which is rather from the mid -range, but is explained by the manufacturer’s approach.
Ergonomics and design
With a change of design operated with its predecessor, the Fairphone 5 does not upset the situation. Its finish can be qualified as austere and really goes to the essentials. It is adorned with a plastic shell, the rear part of which is detachable, authorizing access to the replaceable components. This is transparent and suggests the said components.
The dimensions of the Fairphone 5 are slightly more contained than those of the predecessor. This terminal loses thickness as well as width, and displays measurements of 161.6 x 75.83 x 9.6 mm. He loses above all by weight, going from 225 to 212 g, which gives him a more pleasant grip. The front panel is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 window and occupies almost 81 % of the total surface, which will be quite comfortable for use. The tenors of the market, themselves, happily exceed 90 %.
Fairphone 5 finally wins in 2023 an IP55 standard in place of the IP54. On the other hand, the military standard MIL-810G seems to have disappeared. In terms of connectivity, the smartphone has Bluetooth 5.2 and wifi 6. For the rest, the characteristics are common with those of the Fairphone 4. It is therefore not on this model that you will see a 3.5 mm mini-jack socket reappear.
Test: smartphone / mobile phone
Fairphone 4: The ecological and modular smartphone becomes more convincingThe Dutch firm Fairphone returns with an even more ambitious fourth version of its ethical smartphone. If the DNA of the Marqué.
Modular, yes, but not scalable
The strength of Fairphone is to offer interchangeable components to keep your smartphone life longer. Thus, this model 5 is compatible with 10 modules that can be acquired on the company’s official website. The prices vary depending on the elements and start at € 19.95 for the USB-C port, climbing nearly € 100 to benefit from a new OLED panel. A battery – element most often replaced – costs € 39.95, and it takes about fifty euros to modify one of the photo sensors.
These prices remain overall reasonable. If you are the careful type with your smartphone, it’s a safe bet that you will never have to acquire the slightest replacement module throughout your adventure with the Fairphone 5, except perhaps the rear cover which holds more ‘Cosmetic improvement (around 25 €). Unfortunately, the components are strictly compatible with the latest version of the device; It is therefore impossible to swap the photo modules of your Fairphone 4 for those of 5, even if these two smartphones seem identical.

Screen
Sacred novelty on the Fairphone 5 which abandons LCD technology for the benefit of the OLED. So, inevitably, this impacts the cost of the replacement part, which goes from € 79.99 to € 99.99, but allows this phone to display pretty colors and, above all, a much better contrast.
By default, this new slab is not very well calibrated. After a turn in the settings and having selected the “standard” color profile, the display offers much more convincing colorimetry. We have measured an average color temperature of 6802 k, barely cold, as well as a 3.4 delta e translating drifts in green tones, as well as on the primary red and yellow colors.
Maximum brightness increases slightly compared to the previous Fairphone model. The screen can climb to 581 cd/m², a value that can be considered low compared to current standards, since many smartphones reach or exceed 1000 CD/m². At the bottom, the brightness falls to 5.2 cd/m², a somewhat high value, but which reflects an improvement compared to the Fairphone 4. Reflections management is equivalent to the previous model. With 45 %reflectance, reflections will not be a major problem. Finally, it should be noted that the contrast rate is almost infinite and the time of persistence nonexistent. Tactile delay is 55 ms.
Performance
For its new model, the Dutch company has chosen a fairly original Qualcomm processor. This is the QCM6490, which is not a serial name as we could accry, but a fledged chip. We have already been able to see her at work on the Crosscall Core Z5. It is clocked at 2.7 GHz and coupled with 8 GB of RAM. This cocktail leads to good performance, at the same level as a Snapdragon 782g, for example.
The management of the RAM competitions the high -end. An excellent point from Fairphone, despite the use of an “unknown” processor. For example, responsiveness is as good as what we had observed on the Huawei P60 Pro turning under Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.
At stake, he does not deserve either thanks to his Adreno 642L. Fairphone 5 reaches an average of 62 i/s and drops only 58 i/s. In fact, all Play Store games will run properly on the smartphone, perfect for mobile players.
Our performance tests are carried out with aim, the application developed by the company Smartvis.

Photo
In 2021, Fairphone had integrated two 48 megapixel modules on its model. This year, they go to 50 Mpx (Grand Angle and Ultra Grand Angle). The Selfie module also benefits from this upmarket, Fairphone opting for the famous Samsung JN1 at the front of its latest model.
By default, on the two modules, you will draw clichés in 12.5 Mpx according to the principle of Pixel Bining, But the Grand Angle and the Ultra Grand Angle can use the definition full of 50 MPX. Unfortunately, the difference between the two definitions is quite thin and we cannot recommend you too much to keep the basic definition when capturing your photos.
Main module: 50 Mpx, f/1.9
We can see that the Dutchman has done a huge job on the photo part. Everything has changed compared to Fairphone 4, and that’s good. The general colorimetry of the cliché no longer swings towards blue, but displays much more natural. The level of detail is also a little more precise, especially on the periphery. The mid -range models sometimes struggle here, but the Fairphone 5 is doing very well.
Same observation with a shot captured in low light. Despite the appearance of microcontrast on the piece of card, everything is better than on the shot captured by the previous model. The bitter is more present, the digital noise much more mastered, and once again, the overall tone of the image is much more flattering to the eye.
Ultra big angle module: 50 Mpx, f/2.2
We would have liked to raise similar improvements for the ultra-wide angle, which often stumbles in the mid-range. Las, the too strong deformation of the optics strikes the result. If the image has better colors than that delivered by the Fairphone 4, the Pique is lower.
At night, it’s the same thing. Software processing smooths the whole image to erase digital noise prevailing with the Fairphone 4. There is better in a certain sense, in particular thanks to better exposure, but it is not a module on which it is necessary to count when the light is lacking.
Front module, portrait and video mode
The front module has a 50 MP sensor for very good selfies overall. When the brightness allows it, the self -portraits are of quality, well detailed and do not suffer too many shadows too marked.
Portrait mode also knows how to stand out, since the cutting of targets is carried out without too many visible problems. Obviously, it is not perfect and tends to stop on small details such as hair, hair or accessories. It is clear that it is doing well well.
On video, the Fairphone 5 is able to film up to 4K at 30 I/s at the back and at the front. Optical stabilization on the main module will keep the user out of the tremors.
Autonomy
Fairphone 5 can count on a battery of 4200 mAh (4194 mAh precisely), replaceable for € 39.95. It grants autonomy significantly lower than two previous models since we have not managed to exceed 11 h 8 min of use on our tests smartvisvis. We noticed that the terminal lost its energy fairly quickly and that it heated a little when it was strongly used. This detail will be taken into account if you tend to use your smart companion frequently.
For recharging, the manufacturer does not include a block or cable in the box. Despite everything, he indicates that the load is optimal with a block at 30 W. Thanks to the latter, you will find half of the capacity in about twenty minutes, but all of the autonomy is reached in 2 hours. The load is therefore fast, but ultimately limited.
Our battery tests are automated by target, the application developed by the company Smartvis.
The results obtained with target come from measurements made in real conditions of use (calls, SMS, videos, application launch, web navigation, etc.).
Sustainability
Our sustainability score makes it possible to determine the lasting aspect of the smartphone as much for the consumer as for the environment. It is based on the repairability index, sustainability criteria (protection index, standard connectors, duration of warranty and updates, etc.) and an assessment of CSR policies (corporate social responsibility). You will find all the details of the analysis in our article presenting the sustainability score.
Fairphone 5 ranks among the best in sustainability, in particular thanks to its repairability index of 9.3/10 and an IP55 certification. The modular character of the smartphone also allows the user to replace certain elements individually (10 in total) without particular technical skills. Fairphone also promises 8 years of security updates.
