NVIDIA abandons GameStream on the Shield TV: What a future for Moonlight

NVIDIA plans to end Gamestream in mid-February by updating the NVIDIA Games app present on the Shield. The FAQ published for the occasion specifies that Gamestream will operate until this date and that users who will refrain from updating their shield will always be able to take advantage of it, but without any operating guarantee.

Nvidia’s Shield TVs are recognized to be among the best multimedia boxes thanks to their power and features. One of the latter is about to be deleted: Gamestream. This allows you to broadcast a video game in 4K at 60 i/s on a TV equipped with a Shield TV, the said game being rendered by the PC with a GeForce GTX or RTX graphics card, and the video flow passing by the local network.

If you are a game follower of Gamestream, Nvidia advises you to migrate to the Steam Link functionality integrated in Steam and which offers the same possibilities, although limited to the games present in your Steam library. Alternative, the Moonlight application based on open source implementation of the protocol used by Gamestream.

With such a decision, Nvidia will force the followers of the PC game on TV to look elsewhere to keep their habits. That’s good, Nvidia has a paid solution for them: GeForce Now from € 9.99/month.

NVIDIA abandons GameStream on the Shield TV: What a future for Moonlight ?

In a slightly surprising movement, Nvidia has just announced that an update of its TV box, the Shield, was going to remove the Gamestream function by mid-February. This technology made it possible to use a PC to broadcast (locally) your games to the case, to avoid placing a bulky and noisy PC near your TV.

What future for Moonlight ?

If this news may seem without interest to Apple products users, this is not the case: the customer open source Moonlight, available for iOS, tvos and macOS is based on Gamestream technology. And we can assume that if Nvidia deletes the customer in his TV case, the function may disappear in the medium term in the GeForce Experience pilots, even if Nvidia has not announced anything officially in this direction.

NVIDIA recommends Steam Link

For those who want to continue to broadcast locally, Nvidia recommends either not to accept the update (which is never really a good idea with an Android case), or to go through the Steam Link application from Valve. It is also available on Apple devices and allows the same thing as Gamestream: broadcast your games live and locally from a PC.

The reason for the abandonment of Gamestream is not known, but it is quite surprising: this function had been put forward for years with the Nvidia devices. But perhaps the rise of GeForce Now, which is an equivalent on subscription (and via Internet), has something to do with the disappearance of Gamestream…

If you use Moonlight, there is still a solution: Sunshine. It is a customer open source (once again) compatible with Gamestream. It replaces the options present in Nvidia pilots and has the advantage of operating on different types of graphics and platforms. But integration is not as good as that of Nvidia.
