MWC 2023: Motorola exposes her futuristic smartphone that changes size

Motorola caused a sensation at the opening of the mobile World Congress with its smartphone prototype whose screen can grow by taking place like a parchment. This is the concept that was presented last October at the Lenovo Tech World.

Our colleagues from CNET.com had the opportunity to take charge and try this mobile. A double pressure on a button located on the side makes the screen go out by the upper edge to create a 16: 9 display. Another double pressure and the screen wraps smoothly.

Some applications will trigger the transformation automatically. For example, if you watch a YouTube video and direct the phone in a horizontal position, the application switches to landscape mode and the screen is growing at the same time.

No marketing planned for the moment

Another case of relevant use, the smartphone can remain in its smallest mode when you consult your emails then lie down as soon as you want to write a message, thus offering more space for the virtual keyboard.

When it is in reduced mode, the screen wraps around the back of the phone and can work as a secondary screen. It can be used to consult the weather, notifications, other fast information or as a viewfinder to take selfies.

The concept is relevant but the fragility of the screen raises questions. Indeed, our colleagues say they have noticed that it is extremely fine when it exceeds the phone and gives the impression that it could very easily be damaged. That said, this is exactly the kind of problem that are solved during the development phase. Unfortunately, Motorola has not confirmed whether or not this smartphone has a commercial future.

Xiaomi reveals an amazing concept of futuristic smartphone

Nothing stops Xiaomi ! After revealing very promising concepts in the past, the firm returns to the load with a smartphone without button or port, and with a screen bent to 88 degrees on the slices.

After having presented its impressive recharging technology in the air, with the Mi Air Charge, the Chinese giant has just unveiled another promising concept. This time this is a full screen smartphone. The borderless being generalized on most current smartphones, Xiaomi has pushed the concept even further with the “Four-surved Waterfall Display”, A screen bent to 88 degrees on the sides for a reinforced immersion. And since this screen extends over the slices, Xiaomi has simply devoid of its concept of button smartphone, and even port.

The brand has not given more details on this concept, except that it has filed no less than 46 technical patents to get there. We can nevertheless imagine that such a smartphone should be devoid of front camera. Due to the curvature on the upper edge, there would not be enough room to integrate a pop-up camera. Xiaomi could nevertheless endow this screen with a punch, or even a camera under the screen if this concept came to materialize as a product.

Obviously, this is only a concept and not a market -free product as it. In fact, this smartphone reminds us of another device of the brand, the Mi Mix Alpha. This one had a 360-degree curved screen which covered to the back of the smartphone, with simply a thin strip containing the photo sensors. This smartphone – which could never reach mass production – nevertheless had a port for recharging. To return to the present, Xiaomi is preparing to launch, on February 8, its new flagship in our regions, the Xiaomi Mi 11. This one will not have a screen as impressive as in this concept, but it nevertheless promises us some nice surprises.
