Mustache test Saturday 28.1: What is the entry -level of a premium manufacturer is worth ?

Mustache Saturday 28.1 // Source: Louise Audry for Numerama

The French manufacturer Mustache traditionally sells expensive bikes. But a model escapes this: Saturday 28.1, offered at € 2,099 and often sold below € 2,000. Do we find the know-how and mustache quality ? We will see.

Mustache knows how to make good bikes. The Vosges manufacturer has proven us many times: its models all have great qualities and benefit from a detail care that we find little elsewhere. The pleasure of driving a mustache has a defect that can be prohibitive: most models are sold around € 3,000. Only one escapes this rule: the mustache Saturday 28.1, the cheapest of the manufacturer, sold € 2,099 and which can be found on websites for less than € 2,000 on promotion.

This model designed for the city and the ballads is as pleasant to use as the more expensive bikes of the brand ? We will see.

At the front, Mustache installed a SUNTOUR suspension which does its properly damping work of the vagaries of the Chaussée. The tires mounted by default are not as wide as those in the X-Road range or somewhat more expensive competitors, but they still have enough air to amortize part of the vibrations. The position we take with the handlebars in M, is naturally seated and straight: it is an easy bike to pilot, even for people who do not sport. We clearly seek performance here, but rather not to have back pain after a trip.

The motorization part respects the philosophy of the whole: Mustache went to seek the entry level from one of the most premium manufacturers on the market – Bosch. We end up with an Active Line engine (250 W, 40 Nm), a Purion edge computer and a removable battery of 400 Wh. It allows permanent turbo mode to make forty kilometers on an urban route – a little more if we go down in the modes. Associated with 9 speeds, the engine makes it possible to face all urban playing fields, from pavers to false dishes, including tarmac elevation. You just have to ask him for a “effortless at 25 km/h” journey as you might expect on a higher -end Bosch engine.

The mustache Saturday 28.1 On the road: Graying comfort

And that is why it is estimated that the bet of 28.1 is successful: on the road, it is difficult to put the bicycle in check. When it is used for an urban route, its right position, its tires and its front suspension allow us to feel efforts or pressure on the muscles or the joints. The back does not suffer on a bike of this type and that is precisely what we are looking for for daily journeys.

But this conclusion can be applied to a lot of bikes. We will notice on the mustache that the little more evoked in the equipment clearly facilitate the journeys. The robust QL3 luggage rack allows you to attach tensioners easily but also luggage equipped with this Ortlieb standard-and all the luggage available with less sophisticated ties. We also appreciate the place left on the frame to add a lock on the rear wheel: a few more euros allow us to have a better secure bike for quick stops.

The lighting of this mustache is also excellent and despite its city type, it can go without difficulty in areas abandoned by public lighting. We also appreciate the effectiveness of aluminum mudguards which will not move a centimeter on your journeys. It is robust and effective, the risk of wear is lower and the bike does not vibrate because of components that mustache could have chosen in the entry level – in plastic, for example.

On a daily basis, this is the turbo mode that we will more use so as not to enter the effort and have an assistance capable of taking us up to 25 km/h. But thanks to the 9 speeds, we quite easily exceed this legal assistance tray: unlike the bikes at single speed, there is no feeling of pedaling in a vacuum at high speed. On the other hand, we can obviously not be done to an active engine of Bosch which is feasible with a performance engine. On the same test climb, the first brings us effortlessly between 16 and 18 km/h, when the second is rather between 20 and 24 km/h.

Sport, Tour and Eco modes optimize the battery, in return for lower assistance. In ECO, we have a large exceeding 60 km. The Tour mode may be the “sweet spot” between energy spent and pedaling: you have to put pedal strokes at start-up, but between inertia and the engine, we don’t necessarily pay attention. We only lose furious accelerations.

The handlebars in M is also an example of comfort for the road. The arms are well positioned and it gives the template of the bicycle well: it is he which is the widest element that you will have to worry about to sneak between the poorly parked on the cycle paths. The only drawback of this format: it is difficult to add accessories, because the handlebars are not straight. A scampone carrier (or a GoPro in the case of our video) will therefore be mechanically biased.
