Mg Cyberster: an electric convertible coupe… and not expensive

The exterior design of the cyberster is striking, with a muscular body and engaging curves recalling the classic British roadsters. It has a retractable fabric hood, available in black or red. In its propulsion version, a power of 310 horsepower gives it a top speed of 193 km/h, while the double engine version has a cumulative power of 536 horsepower, a top speed slightly greater than 200 km/h and capable of ‘Bring the 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.

Learn more about MG Cyberster

Article updated on May 12, 2023 : Our colleagues from the site Auto Express were able to approach the MG Cyberster freshly arrived in Great Britain. What to benefit from new photos, but also new information. The Cabriolet electric car will officially arrive in Europe in the summer of 2024. Regarding prices, these have not yet been determined, but the English boss of MG announces 50,000 pounds (around 57,000 euros) for the version with a single engine and 60,000 pounds (around 69,000 euros) for the most powerful version with all -wheel drive.

It is possible that the price in euros is slightly lower, since the price of MG4 and Tesla Model 3, for example, in England is slightly higher than that paid in France. We could therefore expect around 50,000 and 60,000 euros. But this is a first idea, and the Chinese manufacturer could revise them upwards, since the MG boss announces that it is the prices that could be decided if the car was marketed in 2023. In one year, many things can happen, even if the price of lithium (the battery counts for around 40 % of the price of an electric car) is in free fall.

Original article of April 12, 2023: As expected, MG makes a daring return to its roots with the brand new cyberster, an entirely electric roadster that pays homage to the classic British roadsters of the past. Very different from the MG4, the cyberster will be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Salon next week, and the anticipation is strong for a powerful, attractive and potentially affordable roadster that could compete with models such as the Toyota Gr86 and the Mazda MX-5.

An impressive power power of 536 horsepower (400 kW)

We take advantage of a few photos, relayed by the Chinese media It home, While waiting for the announcement. We also know that this cyberster will be available in propulsion and all -wheel drive versions, with the double engine model offering an impressive 536 horsepower power (400 kW). This marks a return to powerful roadsters for which MG was formerly known, and fans look forward to more information on the price of the vehicle to see if it can compete with other affordable sports cars on the market.

The exterior design of the cyberster is striking, with a muscular body and engaging curves recalling the classic British roadsters. It has a retractable fabric hood, available in black or red. In addition, two designs of two 19 or 20 inch alloy rims are visible, adding to the sporty look of the car.

This new cyberster is nevertheless imposing than the roadsters of yesteryear, it measures 4,535 mm long, 1,913 mm wide and 1,329 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,690 mm. Its dimensions make it longer than the Mazda MX-5 (ND) and the BMW Z4 (G29). According to Chinese data, the cyberster has an empty weight of 1,850 kg and a total mass of 2,075 kg (4,575 pounds). Obviously, these figures are much higher than those of the MX-5 Mazda with thermal engine, which has an empty weight of 1,058 kg. But, this is not surprising, since the MG walks with a battery which should be imposing.

Autonomy remains unknown

As specified above, the cyberster will be available in two variants of motorization. The unique motor version is propulsion and can produce up to 310 horsepower (231 kW / 314 PS), while the double -engine version adds an all -wheel drive and a combined power of 536 horsepower (400 kW) from the front engines of 201 horses (150 kW) and rear of 335 horsepower (250 kW). These figures are impressive for the segment, although it remains to be seen if the high -end production version equals the performance of the concept, which accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds.

In any case, the top speed of the 193 km/h propulsion cyberster and that of the all -wheel drive model slightly greater than 200 km/h are good enough for an electric vehicle. However, no information is available on autonomy or capacity of the lithium-ion battery, manufactured by SAIC. We expect a little lower autonomy than the 800 km of the concept.

Complete details on MG Cyberster may be revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 18. But nothing is less certain, because the media Coach Announcement the opposite. We can’t wait to see how its prices will be set and when it is available in Europe.

Mg Cyberster: an electric convertible coupe… and not expensive ?

MG CYBERSTER

Peripheral Paris

The electric roadster of the future will certainly not come out of a Tesla factory.

It’s a return to the expected basics, of course, but still so surprising. MG, an English manufacturer under Chinese pavilion, has unveiled its first electric roadster, the Cyberster, a model that is part of the brand’s old DNA, but which contrasts with its most recent developments. This Cabriolet coupe is timely named. It allows both to celebrate the 100th anniversary of a mythical brand in automotive history (Morris Garage) with dignity, but also to cut the grass under the foot of Tesla which promises its roadster for six long years, without deign to show.
Announced last fall, the MG project is already on the feet, the cyberster is not only official, but already planned for the summer of 2024.

Externally, the cyberster imposes and subtly manages to mix references from the past (flexible convertible) and current lines. Carl Gotham, director of design of the studios of Marylebone (MG cars are still drawn in Great Britain), confirms it:

“Our intention was to imagine a roadster for a new generation of sports car drivers starting from a white sheet, thus opening a new chapter particularly exciting for MG. The evocative style of the cyberster pays tribute to the famous roadsters of the rich story of MG: its long front hood, with its plunging nose and its curved surfaces, while introducing spectacular innovations like its doors in elytre and its rear face imagined in the way of a kammback. »»

Real sportsman or showcase vehicle ?

For the moment, the information unveiled by MG only concerns the aesthetics of the vehicle. Impossible to know more about your technical sheet and even less about its price. However, these two data will determine the place of cyberster in the current automotive panorama.
Indeed, if MG wants to preserve the sportiness of its roadster as much as possible, it will have to make some difficult choices in terms of motorization and battery. On this type of vehicle, lightness is generally a guarantee of quality. However, if weight reduction has always been an obsession with English roadster specialists like MG, but also lotus, it is badly combined with the need to integrate batteries which are by definition heavy. MG will he be able to find the right compromise ?

The other major question concerns the price of this convertible coupe. Since its return to Europe in 2020, at the initiative of Saic Motors, MG has tried to pull prices down with particularly attractive vehicles. Witness its most recent productions, the MG5 and especially the MG4, undoubtedly the best electric vehicle of the moment at the quality/price level. Will the cyberster really be one of them ? MG, can it produce a vehicle that is both attractive, sporty and accessible ? On paper, it is possible, but what is also so is that the roadster is only a showcase vehicle for the brand, a way for Saic to dismantle that it is capable of making something other than affordable cars.
