Report: we tested the “itinerary” of chargemap functionality

Not long ago, we suggest a list of applications to download to drive more serenely in electric. Among them: ChargeMap. In addition to draw up the list of all terminals around, the application indeed offers a “route” functionality for long journeys.

Some information, but easy to use

In order to achieve part of a Mercedes EQE journey that we will talk to you about soon, we wanted to test chargemap. “Drawing” a route on the application is not as simple as writing an address in a GPS. You have to enter the final destination, but also the precise model of the vehicle, its level of load at the time of departure and, if desired, the networks to prefer or to avoid. We have chosen to give priority to Ionity, first to test all the features of the application, but also in order to be certain of the compatibility of our badge.

Result: after having entered the necessary information, chargemap we lay an itinerary … not passing through any ionity charger ! Hopefully we still manage to launch the different charges. It only remains to export the route to Google Maps, connect your smartphone and take the road. Until then, the system is rather easy to use.

The inevitable happened…

After 330 km, we arrive at a first 300 kW charger located in Luxembourg. Unfortunately, and as we feared, the terminal does not accept our badge … and the QR code normally allowing to pay without subscription does not allow us to launch the load … So we re -open chargemap to find another quick terminal nearby. Finally, we plug into a Tesla supercharger “to competition” and informed by ChargeMap. We have 33% battery left. Not bad. According to the application, we should have arrived with only 28% to the previous charger ! Good surprise so. ChargeMap advises us to wait 14 minutes to regain 31% battery. Some photos, a drink and a sandwich later, it’s already 20 minutes away from ! So we leave Luxembourg with 74% battery level.

Fairly precise

200 km later, ChargeMap advises us again to stop, this time at an allego charger near Maastricht. The EQE then displays 35%, a loss of 39%. It is once again better than what the application imagined with a planned decrease of 44%. ChargeMap recommends 9 minutes of patience to regain 24%. Our badge works, but the terminal of normally 150 kW does not exceed 75 kW … So it takes 20 minutes to recover 25%, the fault with the installation, not to the application. We take the road one last time to reach the destination with 40% remaining, or 1% better than the loadmap assessment.

A real plus

Not all electric cars have a navigation system automatically adding the ideal recharges during a long journey. Even those who offer it do not always do it well … Practical, precise and easy to use, the “itinerary” functionality of chargemap has shown itself globally effective during our trip. Too bad that she still does a little “only at her head” when choosing the networks to use. The application does not indicate compatibility with all RFID badges and does not allow to restrict the terminals that we want to use on a specific subscription. A particularity that its main competitor ABPR offers… we check it soon ?
