The iPhone 14 Pro provides several improvements to its camera, including a 48 megapixel sensor and a new image processing technique called Photonic Engine. These give the iPhone 14 Pro an advantage on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max from last year. But what difference do they bring concretely ?

We compared the cameras of the two phones in a series of situations to find out. All the photos were taken with the default camera application on the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro, both under the latest version of iOS 16.

The 48 megapixel sensor of the iPhone 14 Pro captures more details

On the material level, the biggest difference between the two phones lies in the new 48 megapixel sensor of the 14 pro camera, which is as greater (physically) than that of the old iPhone. This makes as much difference for the quality of the photos as the increase in the number of megapixels. As a reminder, the 13 Pro uses a 12 megapixel sensor.

Thanks to a technique called Pixel Binning, the iPhone 14 Pro brings together four group pixels to capture 12 megapixel photos with more precision. It is also possible to take a complete image of 48 megapixels if we use the Proray format of Apple. The new iPhone also offers better noise reduction in low light, even without activated night mode. The dynamic range is also better and allows you to capture more details on shadows and highlights.

For photos in night mode, the two iPhones use similar exposure times, ranging from 1 to 3 seconds depending on the lighting conditions. The image below of the iPhone 14 Pro has a more precise white balance in the whole and slightly better details when you zoom zoom.
