IPhone 13 vs iPhone 13 Pro: which one to choose

On the side of the iPhone 13 Pro, we find the chic and shiny colors of the iPhone 12 Pro. The launch blue color, however, is clarified of the most beautiful effect, can we recognize it. He invites himself alongside the model of iphone 13 pro gold, gray and white, close to those offered last year.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 13 Pro: how to choose your iPhone

Here are all the differences and similarities of new smartphones from Apple.

Since its release in September 2021, the iPhone 13 has made a strong feeling. Its launch also marks the arrival of the new A15 Bionic house chip which equips the whole series 13, from the iPhone 13 mini to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Despite the diversity of the brand’s offer, most consumers are shared between the classic iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro which share little or almost the same characteristics. On what criteria can we therefore be based to make your choice between these two models ?

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro: almost identical designs

Installed side by side, the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro have very few differences. They rigorously share the same dimensions and the same screen diagonal of 6.1 “. On the other hand, on the scale, they display 173 g and 203 g respectively, a difference in weight that is felt during the grip. If the iPhone 13 has aluminum edges, those in the 13 pro version are made of stainless steel. This last material gives a visual impression and a more premium touch.

Like previous generations, the screen is marked by a notch whose size is reduced by 20 % compared to the iPhone 12. At the back, there is a photo module integrating 2 cameras for the iPhone 13 and 3 cameras for the iPhone 13 Pro. As for the finish, the color palette is not the same when you go from one model to another:

  • iPhone 13: blue, midnight, pink, red, stellar light (starlight)
  • iPhone 13 pro: alpine blue, silver, graphite and gold

Here are their measures:

  • iPhone 13: 75.7 x 150.9 x 8.3 mm
  • iPhone 13 Pro: 71.4 x 144 x 8.1 mm

IPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro screen: a perfectly controlled design

For many years, Apple has shown great mastery in the design of its tiles and its latest generation of smartphones has once again been proof of it. The iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro is the same screen size (6.1 inch) and the same pixel density (460 ppi). They both take advantage of OLED Super Retina XDR technology which gives them impeccable display quality. The return of colors is just with very deep blacks and an almost infinite contrast.

  • Super Retina XDR screen
  • OLED any 5.4 inch screen (diagonal)
  • Resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels at 476 pp
  • Super Retina XDR screen
  • OLED any 6.1 inch screen (diagonal)
  • Resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels at 460 ppi

The brightness can go up to 1000 nits on the iPhone 13 Pro while it is limited to 800 nits on the classic model. In any case, the screens remain very bright and guarantee good readability, even in direct sunlight. The only notable difference to note between the two versions, concerns the presence of an adaptive display on the iPhone 13 Pro which, according to uses, offers a refreshing rate fluctuating between 10 and 120 Hz.

In addition, thanks to promotion display technology, we gain fluidity in animations, navigation, reading multimedia content and games. The iPhone 13 does not benefit from these options and is satisfied from a static display of 60 Hz. Despite this relative gap, it remains very pleasant to use on a daily basis.

Variable storage

The iPhone 13 and 13 pro are sold with minimum storage of 128 GB. It is possible to choose versions with 256 or 512 GB. A storage of 1 TB is even offered, but it is only available with the iPhone 13 Pro. As for RAM, it is 4 GB for classic 13 and 8 GB for its premium version.

Performance that borders on the summits

The introduction of the iPhone 13 on the market coincides with the advent of the A15 Bionic, the most recent chip developed by Apple. Integrated in particular in the iPhone 13 and 13 pro, it is a monster of power which is never taken in default, both in basic and intensive use. The two iPhones include contain in their technical sheets:

  • The neural Engine 16 dedicated to artificial intelligence
  • A processor (CPU) 6 cores including 4 high energy efficiency cores and 2 performance cores.

The iPhone 13 has a graphical processor (GPU) with 4 cores, while the pro version has 5. This additional heart is used in the execution of the most energy -greeding tasks, such as games or the processing of the pro -format format. However, in use, the A15 chip shows no slowdown and shows fluidity to any test.

Record autonomy

Autonomy remains an important criterion in the choice of a smartphone. Fortunately, by dint of optimization, Apple managed to reconcile performance and efficiency by producing a chip as powerful as they are. This feat was made possible by the capacity to adapt the chip to user uses. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone 13 and 13 pro do better than their predecessors. In video reading, count an autonomy of 7 p.m. for the classic model and up to 28 hours for the pro.

Depending on the use, holding a whole day or much more is possible, before recharging smartphones. Due to its adaptive cooling rate, the iPhone 13 Pro can be a little more energy -consuming. Naturally, it is quite natural that the drums empties faster when you run gourmet games, that you chain streaming sessions or shots. It is specified that the iPhone are compatible with fast load, provided you use suitable chargers.

A beautiful photo & video part

The rear photo module of the classic iPhone 13 has a high angle lens of 12 Mpx opening at f/1.6 and an ultra-angle of 12 Mpx (f/2.4), coupled with an optical zoom with a magnification by 2. At the front, there is a 12 Mpx TrueDepth Camera.

The configuration of the iPhone 13 Pro differs by the presence of the LIDAR scanner and a 12 Mpx telephoto lens opening at f/2.8. With this telephoto lens, the zoom is more aggressive (x3). The opening of the Grand Angle is larger (f/1.5) and the ultra large angle has a field of vision of 120 °.

In photo, the two devices produce net shots with a profusion of details. Night mode allows you to capture beautiful images, even when the light conditions degrade. The optical stabilization of videos is excellent with an HDR recording up to a 4K definition in 60 frames per second (60 fps).

The iPhone 13 Pro, however, has the premiere on certain functions such as the capture of portrait photos with the activated night mode, the sockets of photos or videos in macro mode or the zoom x2 in the videos made with the rear camera. True to its reputation, Apple does not disappoint on the video part and provides users with several features, including the kinematic mode, much appreciated by amateurs and cinema professionals. It is supported by the two models.

The differences between the two models are not frank. Performance, autonomy or user experience are generally satisfactory. Whatever their requirements, the user is conquered. Indifferently of uses, only the price can constitute a factor relevant enough to prefer one model to the other. Announced at 909 € when it was released, the iPhone 13 is relatively more affordable than the pro version which is offered at 1159 €. These prices concern models with a storage of 128 GB. The differences between iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro should allow you to make an opinion on the device to buy, especially since the advantages of the iPhone 13 Pro will have to excuse its higher price. So what iPhone 13 is the best ? We offer you a Comparison of common points and differences between iPhone 13 and 13 pro, The two new devices presented on September 14 by Apple and which will be marketed for the next twelve months.

Comparison: iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 Pro ?

To start this iPhone 13 comparison against iPhone 13 Pro, let’s talk about design. On the program, Apple always offers the same differences between the standard version and the pro version. They touch the design, colors and photo module. We will also discuss the changes which concern the two devices in comparison with the previous generation.

Difference on their design

In terms of design, Apple has not chosen to change its new range in depth compared to the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. We find this same design with angular borders unlike the iPhone 11. Design is a nod to that of the iPhone 4 and the sales of the iPhone 12 showed that the idea was validated with Apple customers. That said, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are not identical. Differences in design make it possible to distinguish them at first glance.

iPhone 13 2021

On the dorsal part, where the Apple logo and the photo module in square format are housed, the iPhone 13 has only two cameras when the iPhone 13 Pro has three in addition to a Lidar sensor. Note that the iPhone 13 now has two cameras arranged on the diagonal of the square module, unlike the iPhone 12 which had arranged them in a superimposed and aligned manner (a way to distinguish between the two generations).

The use of materials is also different. Including colors. The iPhone 13 is made of aluminum, with sides with more matt colors and on the shiny back. Conversely, the iPhone 13 Pro has shiny edges and a matt back. It is assembled in stainless steel. The old iPhone 12 had exactly the same conceptions and the same distinction. Note that aluminum is already very resistant and the difference between the two versions will be more a matter of taste and feeling in hand.

iPhone 13 Pro Apple 2021

On the front part, the big change in these new iPhone 13 and 13 Pro concerns the notch. The two versions are entitled to a smaller module to accommodate the front camera and the Face ID system for facial recognition. Apple has managed to shrink the size of this 20 % appendix although it is always present compared to Android devices (which does not offer easy 3D recognition) nevertheless).

Color of iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro

Let’s go back to the dorsal side to talk in detail about the choice of colors available. The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro do not offer the same shades in order to be easily differentiated. From the iPhone 11, Apple offers more flashy colors on standard models, but the iPhone 13 is working. Thus, it is available in a new very discreet pinkish shade, in addition to a choice in black, white and blue.

Technical characteristics: Differences between iPhone 13 and 13 pro

The message is the same each year: Apple returns with a new range of more powerful and efficient iPhone. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are entitled to the new A15 Bionic chip, which replaces the old A14 Bionic chip. That said, the two devices do not claim the same specs and do not have the same power or the same autonomy. Additional technologies are present on the iPhone 13 Pro differentiating the iPhone 13.

Before going into the detail of the comparison of the technical characteristics iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, let us go in this comparison on the differences on their technical sheets.

The match of technical sheets

The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro are two 5G compatible smartphones and the two recover exactly the same A15 Bionic chip. To differentiate them until then, the apple brand played on storage levels. However for 2021, the new iPhone 13 no longer starts at 64 GB but 128. It therefore equalizes the iPhone 13 Pro in its first storage version and doubles its capabilities compared to those of the iPhone 12. The storage on iPhone 13 Pro adds a new version in addition to the 128, 256 and 512 GB that it shares with the iPhone 12. This is a brand new model coupled with 1 TB of storage.

The new A15 chip is engraved in 5 nm and Apple has spoken of its most powerful processor ever designed. According to the brand, it is 50 % faster than the old iPhone 12 on the CPU performance part, and 30 % faster in its graphic power (GPU). The SOC has 6 hearts, including two high performance and 4 high efficiency. The GPU incorporates 4 calculation hearts. The “Neural Engine” functionality is also more powerful.

The super fluid screen of the iPhone 13 Pro

For this year 2021, the big novelty of the iPhone 13 Pro is its 120 Hz screen called “Promotion”. It was expected in 2020, but never saw the light of day on the iPhone 12 Pro. This feature refers to the screen refresh rate, which goes from 60 to 120 Hz. To the result, a much more fluid display and animations, and the difference is notable.

The first to take advantage of it will be mobile game enthusiasts. Quick movements and animations are much more realistic with a 120 Hz screen and it can be seen without even having to compare with another private smartphone from technology. For daily use, a 120 Hz screen will scroll through the screen on social networks in a much more fluid way also.

iPhone 13 pro 120 Hz Screen

For many, such fluidity also rhymes with a significant consumption of the battery. Nevertheless, Apple managed to get around the problem. In addition to offering a 120 Hz refresh rate, the new iPhone 13 Pro automatically regulates the rate according to the use of the screen. When the latter does not scroll anything and displays a static image, its cooling rate falls instantly to save battery.

The standard iPhone 13 is deprived of technology. Apple in fact the specificity of the “Pro” range this year. Nevertheless, the iPhone 13 screen is equipped with Retina OLED technology, an already very important GAP with the old Apple screens of Apple Apple. The major difference concerns contrasts: when the screen must display black, it simply deactivates pixels for a much deeper display.

A final difference exists between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro on the screen part and this is the arrival of the permanent display functionality. If you have an Apple Watch Series 6, you already know the option that keeps the screen on without spending energy. The iPhone 13 Pro adds it to its feature list. When the watch screen is activated, the screen refresh rate is strongly slowed down to prevent battery from being too stressed.

Comparative of cameras

Now let’s move on to the most anticipated part: differences in cameras of iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. Several innovations are presented this year on each of the two devices. But they are not the same. Unsurprisingly, the photo and video offer is different between iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. We explain these changes to you in our comparison.

First, the iPhone 13. He still equips himself with two sensors in the back, although they are no longer arranged in the same way as on the iPhone 12. We find there the main 12 megapixel sensor which has a very wide opening at ƒ/1.6 as well as an ultra-angle of 12 megapixels with an opening to ƒ/2.4. The big novelty this year concerns video: optical stabilization arrives and replaces numerical stabilization much less effective.

This is how the image will be as stable as the iPhone 13 Pro range this year. In addition, Apple introduces a new model, which lends itself to the professional world: the kinematic mode. It is, to put it simply of an intelligent autofocus, which will understand when to go from one subject to another. The mode works in HDR Dolby Vision.

iPhone 13 pro photos

On the side of the iPhone 13 Pro, which also adds the kinematic mode, Apple has spoken of the biggest update of photography in its history. The three sensors offered are as follows:

  • Grand-angle of 12 Mp Opening ƒ/1.5
  • Ultra Grand Angle 12 Mp Opening ƒ/1.8 vision 120 °
  • Telephoto ƒ/2.8 with optical zoom x3
  • Lidar sensor for portrait mode

These are three new cameras, which are not the same as those of the iPhone 12 Pro. Apple has revised up the size of the opening of its objectives, but also the size of the sensors for better quality photos and a greater brightness for night photos. A macro mode also arrives on the ultra big angle to take photos just 2 cm from the subjects. Night mode is available on each sensor and users can take photos in Proraw format.

Autonomy and recharge

Now let’s talk about battery in our iPhone 13 comparison against iPhone 13 Pro. On this subject, Apple follows the same strategy as last year: no charger is integrated into the packaging. If you need a new one, you will have to go through the purchase of the accessory. Otherwise, the lightning port and the charging power of the brand’s chargers are compatible with the new devices.

In terms of autonomy, the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro both evolve. Apple promises that the iPhone 13 has two and a half hours more autonomy than the iPhone 12, without quoting additional information. The iPhone 13 Pro has an hour and a half of autonomy more compared to the old generation. Face to face, the difference should not be notable, although the iPhone 13 Pro can consume a little more due to its refreshment rate.

iPhone 13 and 13 Pro: the price comparison

Regarding prices, the differences between iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are notable. The iPhone 13 is available from € 909 when the iPhone 13 Pro is available from € 1159. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 catches up with 128 GB of storage for its entry ticket. Here is the full range of prices and differences between iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro:

  • iPhone 13: € 909 (128 GB), € 1,029 (256 GB), € 1,256 (512 GB)

Duel of photophones: iPhone 14 pro vs iPhone 13 pro, yes, there is a difference

The iPhone 14 Pro provides several improvements to its camera, including a 48 megapixel sensor and a new image processing technique called Photonic Engine. These give the iPhone 14 Pro an advantage on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max from last year. But what difference do they bring concretely ?

We compared the cameras of the two phones in a series of situations to find out. All the photos were taken with the default camera application on the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro, both under the latest version of iOS 16.

To learn more about the specific improvements to the iPhone 14 Pro camera, you can consult our test.

The 48 megapixel sensor of the iPhone 14 Pro captures more details

On the material level, the biggest difference between the two phones lies in the new 48 megapixel sensor of the 14 pro camera, which is as greater (physically) than that of the old iPhone. This makes as much difference for the quality of the photos as the increase in the number of megapixels. As a reminder, the 13 Pro uses a 12 megapixel sensor.

Thanks to a technique called Pixel Binning, the iPhone 14 Pro brings together four group pixels to capture 12 megapixel photos with more precision. It is also possible to take a complete image of 48 megapixels if we use the Proray format of Apple. It offers photographers greater flexibility in terms of retouching and recovery of details of shadows and highlights, among other advantages.

Under good lighting, the 12 -megapixel shots of the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro are similar to a reduced magnification, and it is not always easy to see the difference. It is by pushing a little further than the advantages of the new sensor and the image processing of the 14 will become obvious.

In the images below, the tree trunks are more defined and sharper on the photo of the iPhone 14 Pro than that of the 13 pro. The areas of fine details (like grass) also keep a much better resolution. You can click on the image in full resolution of the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro to compare more easily.

The objective of the main rear camera of the iPhone 14 Pro also has a wider field of vision than that of 13 pro: 24 mm against 26 mm. This can be useful for landscape photography.

The iPhone 14 Pro can take photos with a 2x zoom

The iPhone 14 Pro also has another asset in its round: the 48 megapixel sensor can take photos of 12 megapixels with an effective 2x optical zoom. You will see a new 2x option in the camera interface. It allows you to crop the center of the image with higher resolution to immediately give you more flexibility with the focal length, without the need for a fourth objective. The iPhone 13 Pro can also take photos with a 2x zoom. However, he uses digital zoom and does not have the same quality or the same level of detail as this new technique.

The new 2x option of the iPhone 14 Pro will be useful for portrait mode. Instead of only offering 1x and 3x options as on the previous model, it also allows the taking of photos in Portrait mode at 2x. This gives more natural photos and further flats facial features than the wide appearance of 1x mode or the zoomed perspective of 3x mode.

iPhone 14 Pro VS. 13 Pro: Low light mode and night mode

The iPhone 14 Pro has a new image processing pipeline that improves shots in low and medium light. Combined with the larger sensor, we can see the difference compared to the iPhone 13 Pro in all photos taken at dusk. In the photos below, take a look at the details captured on the branches of the trees near the horizon line.

The new iPhone also offers better noise reduction in low light, even without activated night mode. The dynamic range is also better and allows you to capture more details on shadows and highlights.

For photos in night mode, the two iPhones use similar exposure times, ranging from 1 to 3 seconds depending on the lighting conditions. The image below of the iPhone 14 Pro has a more precise white balance in the whole and slightly better details when you zoom zoom.

Action mode is the star of the iPhone 14 Pro video recording

The iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro films both in 4K at a speed of up to 60 images per second. They offer the same video quality when filming with the main rear camera. But the iPhone 14 Pro unlocks additional video tools such as action mode. It’s as if you had a cardan fixed to your phone to get fluid images when you are in motion, except that you do not need additional equipment. Everything is done in the phone.

Action mode slightly reappears the image and reduces the resolution from 4K to 2.8K. The results are impressive, especially if we compare them to the same video shot on the iPhone 13 Pro.

The video image of the iPhone 14 Pro gives the impression of having been filmed with a stabilizer, which even softens the sudden and jerky movements. The video of the iPhone 13 Pro is much more unstable.

You can see some samples in the video below.

The iPhone 14 Pro has major camera improvements, but the iPhone 13 Pro remains impressive

The latest Apple iPhone has considerable advantages compared to last year’s iPhone 13 pro in terms of taking photos and videos. It is important to note that you do not need to be a professional photographer to take advantage of this 48 megapixel sensor. However, the iPhone 13 Pro is still at the top of its art in most other fields, and still offers one of the best versatile cameras for a smartphone.
