After an aesthetic overhaul in 2020, Apple remains on its achievements in 2021. Difficult to blame him, especially in terms of handling. Inherited from the iPhone 12, the flat slices bring additional comfort when it comes to holding the mobile for a long time, with the added bonus of better stability than on the iPhone 11 and previous generations.
IPhone 13 Pro test: photo excellence, a gigantic autonomy
Without a big change at first glance, the iPhone 13 Pro evolves in three capital areas: display, photography and autonomy.
Everything for the photo. It was almost in these terms that Apple presented the iPhone 13 Pro (from 1.159 euros for the 128 GB version) mid-September, evoking a total overhaul of the three camera modules. But other good surprises accompany the aircraft, which seems to be promised to an excellent lifespan. The Max version (6.7 inches against 6.1 inches) is available from 1.259 euros (128 GB).
The forces of the iPhone 13 Pro
An always convincing design
After an aesthetic overhaul in 2020, Apple remains on its achievements in 2021. Difficult to blame him, especially in terms of handling. Inherited from the iPhone 12, the flat slices bring additional comfort when it comes to holding the mobile for a long time, with the added bonus of better stability than on the iPhone 11 and previous generations.
At the back, cameras are however larger than on the iPhone 12 Pro – due to the enlargement of the sensors, while at the front of the black notch housing the sensors dedicated to selfies and to face is narrower. Apple is offering this year a color called “Alpin Bleu”, frankly successful.
Finally a 120 Hz screen
Until then reserved for the iPad Pro, the promotion screen arrives on the iPhone 13 Pro. Behind this commercial designation, we find the ability to have the refresh frequency oscillate between 10 and 120 images per second, when the old iPhone – but also the iPhone 13 – remain frozen at 60 frames per second.
This possibility, automatic and transparent for the user, may seem anecdotal at first glance. It is however essential by providing an unprecedented level of fluidity when necessary – for example during a video game game or by scrolling the content of a social network – and by drastically saving the battery when the use does not require Not a high refresh rate – for example when reading an email.
With the added bonus of an outdoor brightness surplus (+25%), the screen of the iPhone 13 Pro is simply one of the best on the market.
An impressive autonomy
As mentioned above, the “intelligent” oscillation of the rate of refreshment of the screen according to uses seems effective to save energy, especially since the iPhone 13 Pro incorporates a big capacity battery. On arrival, it could well be one of the most enduring smartphones on the market.
During our tests and by disconnecting the iPhone 13 Pro around 8 am, we only went below 50% that around 10 p.m. What approach the famous CAP of the two days of load. Performances that push our colleagues from 01net.com to qualify the iPhone 13 pro “king of autonomy”, according to their laboratory tests.
Beautiful novelties in photo
If all high -end smartphones make excellent photos in good light conditions, offer pretty pictures in a dark environment remains a challenge. Apple seems to have decided to raise it. The main photo sensor is larger than ever, to store more light, while opening at ƒ /.5.
Night mode (operating thanks to a longer break) arrives on the telephoto lens – used in particular in portrait. He benefits the three cameras of the iPhone for the first time. The “Photographic Styles” function, intended to configure the tone and temperature before any shooting, present on the iPhone 13, is logically part.
With the main camera, Apple wins its bet high hands. At night, the shots remain remarkably detailed, including without using the night mode, therefore with a quick shoot and a more realistic rendering.
With a more classic configuration, the ultra -wide angle camera like the telephoto will have to continue to be supported by night mode to make the best shots.
Let us highlight two other important developments: first the arrival of a new telephoto teleco with an X3 zoom (against X2 before), which opens up new framework possibilities, then the arrival of a “macro” mode, which uses the ‘Ultra wide angle to take photos in very, very close -up.
Great video promises
If the iPhone 13 Pro has a solid photo competition (especially at Google), there remains the undisputed master of the video and further increases his advance.
In the coming weeks, the most sophisticated users will be able to record sequences in Prore format, much less compressed than the others and which restores an image of even better quality.
Already tested on the iPhone 13, the “kinematic” mode, which is none other than a “portrait” mode in video, again offers new possibilities despite some youth defects, namely a lack of precision to apply the vague on certain elements.
The weaknesses of the iPhone 13 Pro
No USB-C port
To date, Apple remains the last manufacturer of smartphones not to have opted for the USB-C, which nevertheless equips almost all its iPad. This year again, you have to be satisfied with a Lightning socket, which will not allow you to exchange your charger with that of an Android smartphone, but which, above all, does not offer a load as fast as in competition.
Conclusion
Worthy successor to the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 13 Pro improves where it was expected: Apple very relevant its photo offer, finally brings a screen with adaptive cooling rate and, above all, offers a smartphone to exceptional autonomy. All with unrivaled power and the promise of software updates for many years. Apart from a price which, for lack of a miracle, did not drop, and Apple’s obstinacy for its Lightning charger, it is very difficult to reproach anything at this iPhone Pro Cuvée.

Despite the progression in photographs of smartphones in recent years, there is a question that divides photographers again and again: Can we be enough of a mobile to make high quality prints ?
Julien Grondin, professional photographer and Iphon reader.fr, delivered us elements of answers with very telling arguments: 3 photographs of the Milky Way, at night therefore, made with its iPhone 13 Pro Max.
iPhone 13 pro max 128 GB at the best price basic price: € 1,259
iPhone 13 pro max 256 GB at the best price basic price: € 1,379
The detail of his shooting
Julien Grondin was kind enough to detail the procedure that allowed him to arrive at these magnificent results:
- Place choice: The photos were taken in Auvergne
- Taking equipment: iPhone 13 pro max and tripod
- Shooting : night mode started on the iPhone and adjustment over 30 seconds of installation. For each photo, about 10 photographs are recorded. This so -called “stacking” technique in astrophotography (photography from the night sky) makes it possible to limit noise and improve the visibility of certain details
- Format: The photographs were recorded in Proraw
- Retouching: Under Lightroom and Photoshop, work on contrasts and colorimetry was finally done
We can only admire the result, which clearly shows that the iPhone, and more particularly the last model 13 Pro Max, is a very good camera. The results he can provide, both the day and the night, are impressive. Provided all the same to know a little bit, especially for the postproduction work.
Thanks to Julien Grondin for sharing his experience. His work is to be found on his Instagram.

Here are the 10 best macro photos taken with the iPhone 13 Pro according to Apple
Apple has published the results of its competition of the best shots made in macro with the iPhone 13 pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. here are the results.
One of the most striking novelties of the latest generation of iPhone is undoubtedly its macro mode, present on the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Admittedly, the mode has already existed for a long time on Android phones, but the version offered by Apple reaches amazing results.
As a reminder, its operation is a little different from the usual macro modes. To trigger it, just get closer to its subject enough and the iPhone will automatically pass on its ultra -wide angle with the right setting and a nearby focus.
Macro competition
The apple firm therefore organized a competition of the best shots in macro made by its community in China, Hungary, India, Italy, Spain, Thailand and in the United States. Ten photos were selected by a panel of experts.
As Apple points out, this selection demonstrates the main interest of macro mode: “transform the ordinary into extraordinary”. This is evidenced by this cliché of flakes on the coat of a dog.
