Red SFR Notice

Red by SFR: What is the Low-Cost operator of SFR worth ?

B & You review

B & You in 2023: What we think of Low Cost mobile offers from Bouygues Telecom

How to change Internet operator easily ?

The Rio code, for operator identity statement, is an identifier which takes the form of 12 digits and which allows operators to identify the lines (fixed, but also mobile) of each users in France. The Rio code was set up a few years ago to facilitate the number transfer procedure By going from one operator to another, but also to fluidify the termination approaches.

To obtain his Rio code, nothing could be simpler, justUse your fixed phone associated with the phone number you want to wear, then call 3179. This number is free. An automatic answering machine will give you the Rio number. You just have to note it and communicate it to the FAI.

If you do not use a fixed line, here are the numbers to contact for the Rio code:

  • Orange : 0 800 003 179
  • SFR: 0 800 973 179
  • Bouygues Telecom : 0 800 943 943
  • Free: 0 805 921 379

When you subscribe to a new subscription, So don’t forget to indicate your old landline phone number via the Rio so that you can automatically terminate your old line. In addition, the majority of operators reimburse the costs of termination of the old subscription, which greatly simplifies the migration of its Box Internet subscription.

How to terminate your Internet box at no cost ?

To terminate your subscription, The easiest way is to migrate your fixed phone number to a new operator.

You can also go through your customer account to do it online. This will prevent you from waiting to have an advisor on the phone as much as they are only available at the working hours. Generally between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, sometimes Saturday. There is no particular notice, but the termination often takes a few days.

Even for “non -binding” offers termination has a cost, Your ISP still requires termination costs, they are supervised by Chatel law. However, we can easily be reimbursed for the costs. Because when you terminate your internet subscription, it is probably to go to another access provider. However, they all offer to reimburse you for costs, generally up to 100 euros. If you win your offer, you will also have to return your box to the operator.

What is the best internet box ?

Difficult to designate a box in particular as the best, all have their advantages and disadvantages.

Three models, however, stand out:

  • Bouygues’ Bbox Ultym is one of the only on the market to offer WiFi 6, it offers a bonus an Ethernet 10 Gbits connector. This therefore allows him to take full advantage of the 2 Gbit/s offered by the operator, so that his computer is compatible. Another strong point on the TV part: it uses Android TV and therefore offers many applications.
  • Very ambitious, The Freebox Delta, offers both network (NAS, home automation) and multimedia functions, with a sound part supplied by Devialet. It offers as a bonus the highest flows on the market with 8 Gbit/s. Unfortunately to take advantage of it you will have to go through the SFP+connector, 10 gbits unusual outside the professional world.
  • The Freebox Pop represents a good compromise. It is compact, complete in terms of functions and even offers an optional WiFi repeater. Above all, it offers a speed of 5 Gbit/s which can easily be used thanks to the 2.5 Gbits Ethernet connector present. The latter is indeed found on an increasing number of computers and NAS.

Fiber, xdsl, cable: what differences ?

Today there are 2 major technologies to connect to the internet at home. The fiber family, either to the home (or FTTH for Fiber to the Home), or with a part on copper cables with the FFTLA (Fiber to the last amplifier) and the FTTB (Fiber to the Building) then the XDSL family which brings together the ADSL and the VDSL.

The FTTH is the most efficient technology. The whole connection goes through an optical fiber, from the service provider to the subscriber box. The FTTB and the FTTLA rely on optical fiber in the main part but the last meters are however traveled on copper. Either from the bottom of the building to the subscriber in the case of the FTTB, or from the last “amplifier” (from the pâté of the house in clear) to the home for the FTTLA. These two technologies make it possible to obtain high speeds or even equivalent to the FTTH in download, but are back in upload. All these technologies allow very high speed access (greater than 30 Mb/s).

ADSL, VDSL and their variants are based on the copper network historically dedicated to fixed telephony. If its flows are limited, especially in upload, Technology has the merit of being widely deployed and therefore accessible in rural areas. They generally allow access to high speed connection. However, the more you are far from the distributor, the lower the flows. Copper is however extinction since the network will be gradually dismantled from 2023 and should go out in 2030.

What is the advantage of an internet box without obligation ?

The main highlight of a fixed offer without obligation is its price ! Lower -end, they offer reduced speeds and television is most often optional.

Last advantage, you can easily change operator and therefore regularly switch to the cheapest offers. Change operator will require more efforts than with a mobile subscription since it will be necessary to return the old box.

How to choose your Internet supplier ?

Unlike the mobile, the quality of service is no longer assessed regularly by ARCEP since 2018. The regulator works on new tools, but the latter are not yet in place. It is therefore complicated to gauge the quality of the different fixed internet operators without falling into the anecdote.

The most recent data published in 2018 give us some avenues. In the event of worries it is Orange that is best, with the shortest repair times, followed closely by Bouygues and Free. Donkey hat on the other hand for SFR which takes an average of ten days to solve the problems ..

For flows, we have more encrypted data thanks to NPERF . In this little game, it is orange and free that stand out, especially on the fiber. The historic operator has the best latency and the upload while the Télécoms troubleshoots offers the best downloads for download.

For ADSL, it is Free and Bouygues that offer the best average flows. These figures are however less interesting than for fiber, because in ADSL your flow will be much more influenced by your distance from the DSLAM than by the operator.

Why are there any price differences between offers ?

Our comparator of the best fiber and ADSL offers displays Prices that can vary from simple to triple… sometimes within the same operator. The prices reflect what the offers contain. The lowest prices are often satisfied with the bare minimum, namely Internet connection and box rental. If you do not watch television or you do not need a connection to 1 GB/s, these offers are largely sufficient and very often without commitment.

These very low prices are also explained by the price war that operators are currently engaged in promotions. To attract new customers, they offer promotional prices that are only valid for a year. After 12 months, prices generally increase significantly.

Attention, Lthe lowest prices are also reserved for “new customers”. That is to say users who will go from one operator to another. If you are for example at Orange and you have spotted an interesting offer at Orange or Sosh, you will not be able to be entitled to promotional prices.

If on the contrary you want to have television or a mobile plan in addition to your fixed internet connection, then The price will increase mechanically. This is explained by the fact that the user has two boxes (one for television, one for the internet) and the fact that certain channels or services are sometimes exclusive and included in the operator’s offer (Netflix, OCS , television recorder, calls abroad, etc.)).

In general, the number of channels, the quality of the Internet box, the Internet debit, the technology and the presence or not of the commitment make the price of the supply vary.

Netflix, Web, YouTube, what are my debit needs ?

It is difficult to give a simple and general answer. Debit needs are very dependent on the home, the number of people who live there and their uses.

However, we can give some orders of quantities to estimate the flow needs: basic web navigation consumes little bandwidth, 5 Mb/s is very largely. Video streaming is more greedy. For the best quality available, It takes 25 Mb/s for Netflix and even 30 for Amazon Prime Video, YouTube needs 15 Mb/s. Also think that television consumes bandwidth if it goes through your box.

If you are a player, the game as such consumes little or no bandwidth, however, you must download and update them. These are generally large files. For this to be too painful, it takes 50 Mb/s well, And it’s a minimum.

In the end, if you have a fairly basic use of the internet: navigation, email, and streaming an ADSL offer at 50 Mb/s is sufficient. If you handle large files, go to an offer at 100 Mb/s or more.

How is the installation of fiber optics going ?

GOOD. Most of the time. If you are eligible for FTTH fiber, it is that there is not much left to do. Optical fiber already arrives in the common areas, so it only remains to pull it to your accommodation. For that, A technician will have to move to your home. Optical fiber will be sent from the technical room corresponding to your accommodation. Be sure you have access to it on the day of the installation.

The fiber will be installed in the excessive chutes or sleeves. If they are not available, it will follow them as discreetly as possible. To reach where you want to install your box, The technician will probably be brought to unravel a few holes in the partitions. These are not more than a centimeter in diameter and the cables are very discreet. Except in particular cases, the installation is offered by the access provider. If you are a tenant, also remember to notify your owner of the fiber installation.

Internet operator change: how long without having the internet ?

Once you have found or subscribed to a fixed internet offer that suits you, arises the distressing question of the transition from one operator to another and the risk of a breakdown of the service. It is however possible to pass through a porting period in following certain conditions.

The simplest case occurs when you request portability of the number of your fixed phone to the new operator, in giving him his code Rio (see below). This is the most advantageous solution, because not only will the new operator be responsible for terminating your old contract for you, but in addition The internet connection of the old operator will only cut himself when the new operator is connected is activated. Concretely, when the box of your old operator no longer allows you to connect to the Internet, just plug in the new operator box to reconnect. Practical.

In the case of the passage from ADSL to fiber optics, this solution to avoid interruption of the service is not necessarily possible. The easiest way to avoid a breakdown of the service is then to Keep your ADSL line until the fiber optics is placed in your accommodation, then terminate the ADSL contract when you are assured that the fiber connection is activated. The two technologies indeed use two different supports (copper and optical fiber), which allows you to have two different internet access.

I move, how to keep my fixed phone number ?

The portability of its old telephone number to a new address is important because it allows, in the event of subscription to an offer from a new operator, not to have to worry about terminating its old contract. In this case, it is the new operator who will take care of it, which a lot facilitates the steps.

If you move, it is possible to easily keep your fixed phone number. However, three cases must be differentiated:

  • If your fixed number starts with 09. It’s the simplest case, Just tell your new operator that you want to keep your old number. Which is possible by communicating his Rio code to him. The new operator will then carry your old number automatically to your new address, whatever the city where you move to France.
  • If your phone number begins with the indicative of a region (01.02,03.04 or 05 at the start of the number) And that you move in this same region, Again, it is enough to tell your new operator that you want to keep your number to bring it to your new address, by communicating the Rio code to it.
  • Finally, if your fixed telephone number begins with the indicative of a region (01.02.03.04 or 05) But that you move to another region (with another indicative, therefore), you are then forced to change the phone number. The portability of the phone number is not possible.

Attention, If you are in the last case, you are also forced to terminate your own contract with your former operator And to open a new line (hence the new telephone number) with a new operator.

4G box or ADSL subscription ? How to choose

If you live in a little dense area, That is to say rural, it is likely that your ADSL connection is limited. In this case, the solution may be to go through a 4G router which offers higher flows if the mobile coverage is good. Depending on the situation, This can go up to 325 Mb/s, But beware the connection is less stable and the latency (the “ping”) higher, this can be embarrassing for certain uses such as online game for example.

To find out if a 4G box is more interesting than an ADSL subscription, nothing’s easier. Look at which speed is available at home thanks to our comparator, then Take your smartphone and perform a debit test with an application like speedtest. If the figures are higher under these conditions, it is better to opt for a 4G offer. Be sure to test in the room where you will install the router, The flows can vary significantly to the nearest a few meters.
