Prices and availability
The Ryzen 5600X of AMD was put on the market in November 2020 with an announced price of around 315 euros. The Ryzen 5 5600X is compatible with PCIe 4.0 so that your components are faster, and supports the DDR4 up to 128 GB. The Core i5-12600k went to PCIe 5.0 and DDR, even if these characteristics are not yet real sales arguments. There DDR5 for 12th generation Intel processors is incredibly expensive and difficult to find, and the PCIe 5 standard.0 has not yet entered the game. It’s still good to have a time testor.
There New i5 architecture also requires a new LGA 1700 socket. This means that your old motherboard will not be compatible with the 12th generation of processors. Performance
The Ryzen 5600X has always been one of our favorite processors, since its release. It offers very good multi -thread and gaming performance. Although he stood up to competition thanks to his price-performance report when it was released, the Alder Lake generation has arrived and the game is increasingly tight.
At stake, the Intel Core i5-12600k is a real beast. Its six P-Cores Golden Cove offer incredible mono-heart performance, perfect for gaming. In the gaming panel tested we have titles like Forza Horizon 4 and Civilization VI, and the 12600K surpasses not only the Ryzen 5600X, but a lot of more powerful processors in the series. The latest generation Intel is fully found in the pickup, and in many cases, the 12600K approaches not far from the Core i9-12900k. Much more expensive, but without hesitation the king of gaming.

In the field of productivity, which was dominated by AMD for years, the 12600K is once again incredibly well. By pulling the best party of its Gracemont e-cores, this 10-core processor (six plus four) buries the six cores of poor 5600x and manages 10 to 30 % better in most of the most popular benchs on the market. Although the Ryzen 9 5950X still manages to keep its title in this area, let’s not forget that it is much more expensive than the 12600K. In this account, even the Intel 12900K offers a better price-performance report, even if the performance is sometimes behind.
The only reserve to be taken into account is that most of these figures were obtained by taking advantage of the DDR5 that the 12600K allows to use. Not only is it a memory that you cannot recycle from your old builds, but in addition, it is very expensive and few mother cards are currently compatible. DDR4 is not likely to destroy its performance, especially in gaming, but it may affect them. The 12600 is therefore a very good game processor, and at a good price in addition to that, but it implies a fairly expensive upgrade.
Power and temperatures
This is another cost to take into account: the power. The Core i5-12600k is very energy-consuming for a mid-range processor. Although it takes full advantage of Intel 7 architecture (engraving in 10 Nm) and its e-cores help reduce the demand for power and thermal dissipation in the context of limited use, its needs climb in arrow as soon as it is pushed a little. Its TDP is 125 W, but pushed in its entrenchments for more performance, its TDP can increase to 150 W.
This remains more effective than the previous generation of Intel processors that could consume much more for much less performance, but it is not negligible.
As impressive as it is, the 12600K requires double power and thermal dissipation when compared to AMD architecture.
In comparison, the Ryzen 5600x has a 65 W TDP, and even if it was noted that it could be superior in full load or if it has enough thermal margin for overclocking, it generally does not exceed the 70 W, or of little.
Although the 12600K is impressive, its architecture requires twice as much power and thermal dissipation. This represents as much additional pressure on your cooling system and your diet. Ryzen processors remain better for more reduced systems or if you have constraints for your cooling system. This is all the more true if you want to accommodate a big graphics card in addition.
The Core i5-12600k is the best in play, but it has a price
Intel paid the high price for staying at 14 Nm, AMD had enough time to catch up with several Ryzen processors with Zen 3 architecture that dominated the gaming segment all last year. But now the 12600K and the other processors of the Alder Lake generation have overturned the steam by offering still unequaled gaming performance. By increasing the number of hearts in its mid -range processors as AMD did with its first generation of Ryzen processors, Intel has managed to improve its performance enough to match or even overshadow AMD in the mid -range.
The Core i5-12600k is a prodigy of performance, but as Intel, it also pays a heavy price because of the stagnation of Intel. It is a processor that is at the cutting edge of technology, but it is already exceeded on certain points. If it is pleasant to see Intel go to 10 Nm (which they call Intel 7) on our machines, it happens years after AMD which has passed to a real engraving 7 nm TSMC. In addition to its finesse of engraving and the fact that it focuses on fewer hearts, the Ryzen 5,5600x is more effective from a thermal point of view, but also quieter.
Finally, all this does not matter if you want a big machine for gaming or a production machine at a low price, the 12600K is clearly the best processor you can offer yourself. However, if you need something more reduced or consumption matters to you, then this is a point to take into consideration.
