Thanks to Boot Camp, you can install Microsoft Windows 10 on your Mac, then switch between MacOS and Windows during the restart of your Mac.

What you need to install Windows 10 on a Mac

Boot Camp requires using a Mac computer with an Intel processor.

  • MacBook sold in 2015 or later
  • MacBook Air sold in 2012 or later
  • MacBook Pro marketed in 2012 or later
  • Mac Mini marketed in 2012 or later
  • iMac marketed in 2012 or later 1
  • IMAC PRO (all models)
  • Mac pro marketed in 2013 or later

The latest macOS updates, which may include updates from the Boot Camp assistant. The Boot Camp assistant will allow you to install Windows 10.

64 GB or more free storage space on the start -up disk of your Mac:

  • You can install by having only 64 GB of free storage space, but it is recommended to have at least 128 GB for optimal experience. Windows automatic updates require such a space, or more.
  • If your iMac Pro or Mac Pro has at least 128 GB of memory (RAM), the free storage space on the start-up disc must be at least equal to it 2 .

A USB key with a 16 GB or more storage capacity, unless you use a Mac for which it is not necessary to install Windows from a USB key.

A 64 -bit version of Windows 10 Family or Windows 10 Professional on a disk image (ISO) or another installation medium. If you install Windows on your Mac for the first time, use a full version of Windows and not an upgrade.

  • If your Windows copy has been provided to you on a USB key or if you only have a Windows product key and no installation disk, download a disk image from Microsoft site.
  • If your Windows copy has been provided to you on DVD, you may need to create a disk image of this DVD.

Install Windows 10 on a Mac

To install Windows, use the Boot Camp assistant supplied with your Mac.

1. Check your safety setting at start -ups

See how to check your safety setting at start -ups. The default safety setting at start -up is maximum security. If you had selected no security for this setting, put it back to maximum safety before installing Windows. After installing Windows, you can use any safety setting at start -up without harm in Windows start -up.

2. Use the Boot Camp assistant to create a Windows partition

Open the Boot Camp wizard from the Utility Subdossier in your Applications File. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

  • If you are invited, insert a USB key. The Boot Camp wizard will use it to create a startable USB player for the installation of Windows.
  • When the Boot Camp wizard asks you to define the Windows partition size, do not forget the requirements concerning the minimum storage space of the previous section. Define a partition size that meets your needs, because you will not be able to modify it later.

3. Format the Windows partition (Bootcamp)

Once the Boot Camp assistant has finished, your Mac is restarting, then displays the Windows installation program. If the installation program requests where to install Windows, select the Bootcamp partition and click Format. In most cases, the installation program automatically selects and formats the Bootcamp partition.

4. Install Windows

Disconnect all external devices not necessary for installation. Click Next and follow the instructions on the screen to start the installation of Windows.

5. Use the Boot Camp under Windows installation program

Once the installation of Windows is completed, your Mac starts under Windows and opens the welcome window of the Boot Camp installation program. Follow the screen instructions to install Boot Camp, including Windows support software (pilots). When you are done, you are invited to restart the computer.

  • If the Boot Camp installation program does not start, launch it manually to finish the installation of Boot Camp.
  • If an external screen is connected to your Mac by a Thunderbolt 3 port, its display will remain virgin (black, gray or blue) up to 2 minutes during installation.

Switch between Windows and MacOS

To switch between Windows and MacOS, restart the computer, then keep the option (or alt) key ⌥ ⌥ stamped during start -ups.

Install Windows 10 on a Mac

To install Windows, use the Boot Camp assistant supplied with your Mac.

Find out how to check your secure start -up settings. Maximum safety is the default secure start -up setting. If you have defined it on any security, restore it on maximum security before installing Windows. After installing Windows, you can use any secure start -up setting without affecting your ability to start from Windows.

2. Create a Windows partition using the Boot Camp assistant
