New Renault 5 electric (2023): all our information

The scenic takes up the CMF-EV platform, inaugurated at Renault by the Megane. We can also see the scenic as the XL version of the Mégane, which is certainly qualified as compact by Renault, but is a compact of modest size, with 4.21 meters in length. The scenic stretches for 4.47 meters. He benefits from an elongated wheelbase of 10 centimeters compared to that of the Megane, at 2.78 meters.

IAA Munich 2023-Renault Scénic E-Tech Electrique: Finally a great autonomy at Renault

The scenic makes its revolution. In addition to leaning towards the SUVs, it goes to the whole electric. It becomes the first electrical Renault with a big autonomy. Automobile-Propre was able to discover it in preview.

Forget what you know about the scenic. Renault just kept the name and changed everything else. It starts with the only electric motorization with a dedicated platform. Then it continues with the silhouette.

The scenic is no longer a compact minivan, a genre he had nevertheless invented … but which is no longer in fashion. Fashion is at SUVs, the new generation of the scenic therefore leans on the side of the SUV. This can be seen for example with body protections on the rings and around the wheels. If the scenic does not however take a very adventurous air, it clearly abandons the rounded shape of the minivans, abandoning for example the plunging hood. The appearance is more structured, more angular.

Small airs of already seen

With this model, Renault continues the revolution of its design, started with the Rafale coupe SUV. 180 ° turn, we forget the curves, make way for more marked angles. Some will see a Peugeot influence. Which is not completely false, because this scenic was supervised by Gilles Vidal, who arrived at Renault in 2020 after working at the head of the Lion design (we owe him for example the success of the second 3008).

Some gimmicks he has set up at Peugeot even find themselves on this scenic, such as the destructured drawing of the rims. Or a pushed treatment of small details. Gilles Vidal wanted to play with the diamond. Losange halves constitute the new light signature at the front, on each side of the shield. Above all, here, the form of the logo gives birth to a very successful mesh at the grille level.

On the profile, the decor of the Custode is reminiscent of that of the Hyundai Tucson. If this decor is aluminum color, the brand has banned chrome. At the back, Renault abandons the light headband, opting for arrow -shaped lights on the sides. In order to improve aero, deflectors are molded in the shield.

The Megane XL

The scenic takes up the CMF-EV platform, inaugurated at Renault by the Megane. We can also see the scenic as the XL version of the Mégane, which is certainly qualified as compact by Renault, but is a compact of modest size, with 4.21 meters in length. The scenic stretches for 4.47 meters. He benefits from an elongated wheelbase of 10 centimeters compared to that of the Megane, at 2.78 meters.

Habitability and trunk volume are not strengths of the megane. Faults that the scenic has not. At the back, we enjoy a beautiful leg space and a generous roof guard. The feeling of space is reinforced by the flat floor and the right size of the windows, the box belt not being too high. It is also reinforced with the panoramic glass roof. This is not opening, but benefits from a unique function for a model of a general manufacturer: it is opacifying.

This is a technology developed with Saint-Gobain. No need for velum, the roof becomes opaque. This can even be done halfway, for example with transparent to the front and the opaque at the back, or vice versa. The function can be controlled by the voice thanks to the Google Assistant.

Good chest, bad modularity

On the side of the driving position, we are in known ground, because we find the furniture of the Megane. There is thus a set of L-shaped screen: a horizontal screen of 12.3 inch for instrumentation and one of 12 inch vertical for info-division, with the services of Google. The scenic, however, benefits from a new design for interfaces, more graphic. Just below the central screen, a space allows you to indurate phones induction.

Renault skips leather for this model, which he also presents as an example of a sustainable vehicle. Almost a quarter of the mass of the car corresponds to recycled materials. For example, there is up to 80 % recycled material for the dashboard (polypropylene from industry scraps) or 100 % for upholstery (in techno finish).

On the chest side, the volume is generous, at 545 liters. But the high perched threshold forms a sacred walk. The bench folds according to the 40/20/40 format. But once folded down, there is another walk, the fault of a battery of which part of the modules are on a second level. The scenic has therefore kept a beautiful interior volume, but it promises to be less practical for use. The modularity is simple (we forget the independent seats) and the little tips appreciated by families are almost absent. Renault also explains that it is now a model cut for parents with two teenagers more than three young toddlers. The proof with the central “Ingenius” armrest, which incorporates USB sockets and media for phones and tablets.

610 km of autonomy !

In terms of technique, we therefore have the same basis as the mega, but the offer is different. Here we have engines (synchronous Rotor Bobiné) of 125 and 160 kW, or 170 and 220 hp. Maxi couples are 280 and 300 Nm.

The 125 kW block is associated with the 60 kWh battery, which gives autonomy in a mixed WLTP 420 km cycle. The big novelty is the 87 kWh battery, for the 220 hp block. With it, Renault promises 610 km ! So we finally have a high autonomy electric Renault. Small originality of the model: the regulatory sound issued within 30 km/h, which allows pedestrians to hear an electric vehicle arriving, was here imagined by the musician Jean-Michel Jarre.

For recharging, the vehicle may have the on -board charger 22 kW. In fast current recharge, the maximum power will be 130 kW with the 60 kWh battery, and 150 kW with the 87 kWh battery. The brand says it has improved the load curve with a longer tray. The heat pump is standard. Pallets at the steering wheel allow you to choose from four “recovery” braking levels as Renault says.

New Renault 5 electric (2023): all our information

The new Renault R5 will be unveiled to the public a little later in the year. In the meantime, discover all our information on the electric city car.

Renault has decided to bring out an old glory to launch its city novelty Citadine. Like many manufacturers, the diamond prefers an already known name and a design that will recall the past rather than a 100 % new product like Volkswagen was able to do it with the ID range. The R5 will therefore be the renewal of the electric B segment at Renault after more than a decade of Zoe, which will not clearly have deserved at European level. But the R5 must cross a CAP with several levels: technological, first, but also in terms of costs.

Design

Our exclusive design of the dashboard of the future Renault 5 E-Tech Electric of 2024, which will have

The concept we know is ultimately already very close to the standard model. Our teams can confirm this, the new R5 will be largely in the spirit of this interesting showcar, with its many reminders at the first R5.

The rear amounts, the lights, the front more rectangular and less in the curves than a zoe, everything is there to bring us back to the good memory of the R5. On board, Renault also decided there to make many reminders: The steering wheel with a specific design will stand on a dashboard marked by vertical streaks. A visual marker of the first generation R5.

Engines

We have exclusively tested the electric R5 prototype. This handling was instructive

The new R5 will be available in at least two versions. The first, “Civil”, will be turned to the general public with an engine with Bobin Rotor developed jointly by Valeo and Renault, and produced in France, in Cléon. It should develop 136 hp, the current power. zoe. However, it is lower than Peugeot E-208, but the R5 will be illustrated on other points. The second, proposed by Alpine, will revolve around 200 hp.

The presence of rear multi -way trains with wider tracks and new battery technology will pass a CAP to the Renault electric city car. The diamond has already worked harshly to produce a megane e-tech on the fine and light battery, we expect the same result on the R5. The battery capacity, which has not yet been communicated, will be according to our information from 40 and 52 kWh. Renault remains on traditional NMC chemistry (therefore calling for cobalt) for its energy density. A rather logical choice given the vehicle template, which does not allow a large battery pack.

For those who would like to relive the era of the R5 Alpine, there will always be the possibility of opting for the “A” version of the R5. Also produced in Douai, it will receive a power engine between 215 and 220 hp with the largest battery.

Price

The future 4Ls of 2025 and R5 of 2024 will be eagerly awaited. But what price will they be sold?

Beyond waiting on design and autonomy, the most important information will be the price of the electric R5. Renault had started the project by speaking of an entry ticket at € 20,000, in the same way as the Volkswagen rival city car. Since then, the two manufacturers have been changed against the outbreak of the cost of raw materials. Playing prudence, Renault and the VW group have rather bet on an attack price placed at around 25,000 €. But very recently, Renault confirmed to us that they were targeting a lower sale price than direct competition. An Electric R5 40 kWh in entry -level finish should therefore be sold under 25,000 €, excluding ecological bonuses. By what the R5 is launched, the scale of the bonus will have had time to move: in 2024, the maximum premium could increase to € 4,000, thus dismissing the possibility of an R5 under the € 20,000, Bonus inclusive.
