The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro both offer the best photo experience on their respective price ranges. The same can be said of Pixel 7a, which has improved all photo sensors compared to the variant of 2022. They have the same design, the same Tensor G2 processor and the same Android 13 interface.

The differences between the two models are in the screen, the photo module and the battery. The Pixel 7 Pro has a higher refresh rate and a larger diagonal. He also has an extra photo sensor with a dedicated telephoto lens. And its battery is slightly larger. On the other hand, the other two models are distinguished by their accessible price.

For the screen, we have a 6.3 inch oled slab in Full HD+ on the Pixel 7 and a 6.7 -inch AMOLED slab in QHD+ resolution on the pro. The Pixel 7 Pro also has a higher cooling rate of 120 Hz, Pixel 7 is blocked at 90 Hz.

With more compact and modest specifications, the Pixel 7A has an OLED screen of 6.1 inch in Full HD+resolution, retaining the same 90 Hz refresh rate as the Pixel 7. Unfortunately, Google has not yet communicated the maximum brightness for this model.

Concretely, out of three models, the screens are of excellent quality. The difference in cooling rate is not really seen in the naked eye. The maximum brightness has only been measured on 5% of the screen so you will never have the 1400 or 1500 nits announced. We are rather around 1000 nits. It remains very well in terms of readability, even in direct sunlight.

The colorimetry is with small onions with very faithful colors and a well -managed temperature. It does not pull too much to the yellow/hot tones or to the blue/cold. They could still have slammed a little more, to be a bit more lively. Nor do we have control masses in the screen settings. It should be noted that the pixel 7a screen can lack a little brightness in full sun.

The three models have the same SOC Tensor G2. It is a chip made by Samsung according to a 4 nm process. On the GPU side, we have a Mali-G710. All this is coupled with RAM LPDDR5 and UFS 3 storage.1. The Pixel 7 Pro has a little more RAM with up to 12 GB against 8 for the pixel 7 and 7a.

In terms of performance, we are on results very similar to the first generation Tensor processor that we saw on the Pixel 6 last year. These are not the most powerful smartphones on the market, clearly.

But for my part, I was able to run Call of Duty or Apex Legends in 60 fps with the graphics in the maximum without problem. I also did not note an overheating problem. On the other hand, on the pixel 7 and pixel 7a, we have thermal clamping. Performance is much less stable than on the pixel 7.

On the benchmark illustrated below and which simulates gaming use for 20 minutes, the Pixel 7 Pro has delivered a stability rate of 90 % while the Pixel 7 barely exceeded 70 %, and the Pixel 7a reached 75 , 6 %.

So basically, on long intense play sessions, you can have occasional FPS losses. It’s not blatant, it’s still progressive, but that’s what. Pixel 7 are not gaming smartphones, but we can play without worries with. No need to make concessions on graphics.

This is normal, on the pixel 7, Google simply makes a cutting and cropping from photos taken at wide angle in full resolution. Design

Are we going to talk to you about the design of the two pixel 7 knowing that Google had already leaked design before its official announcement last week during an online event. And yes, we can say it, we already know almost everything in terms of design. And unsurprisingly, the Pixel 7 take up the design of the pixel 6 with a glass back and especially this bar on the back where the photo smartphones is located.

This year, exit the glass bar for a brushed aluminum bar for Pixel 7 and chrome aluminum for Pixel 7 Pro. The glass back is still shiny type and it’s really a shame because we would have preferred a frosted glass. Afterwards, we can only be pleasantly surprised by the resistance to fingerprints, which gives us an idea of ​​the quality of the glass of the pixel 7. The pixel 7 are available in a black or white version but the pixel 7 will be entitled to a green lemon version while the pixel 7 pro will be entitled to a sage green version.

On the side of the front, it’s quite classic since we find screens with a punch at the center in the center and an optical fingerprint sensor under the screen. Nothing revolutionary in itself, it is archi-classical. The fingerprint sensor is average and we are far from what Samsung offers for example. The edges of the screen are much finer this year but in return, there is a slightly thicker chin. On a daily basis, that doesn’t change much but the most picky will note it.

The pixel 7 are well certified IP68 and it should be noted that the two versions offer almost an identical weight while the screen sizes are very distinct. The finish is excellent in itself and breathes the top of the range. We always find the volume buttons and the switching button on the right edge, which releases the left edge. On the other hand, we would have preferred to have the watch button at the bottom and not at the top of the volume buttons, like the other smartphones on the market. Obviously, with a more compact size, the grip of the pixel 7 is better, especially for the little hands. The pixel 7 pro will be used with two hands but we appreciate its weight of only 212g, it is 30g less than an iPhone 14 pro Max and in a pants pocket, it immediately feels.

Display and audio

Like last year on the Pixel 6, there are screens a punch at the top and in the center, like at Samsung. It should be noted more that on the pixel 7 pro, the screen is curved, which allows you to refine the silhouette of the smartphone. The difference is less this year because the pixel 6 had relatively thick screen edges. The Google Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 7 still offer an OLED panel. Without surprises, they are very well balanced. With excellent colorimetry, excellent contrast and deep blacks, this year’s tiles offer more brightness and this is quickly seen on HDR or daily content in full sun.

The Pixel 7 finds the refresh rate of 90Hz, like the Pixel 6 last year and if it is not worth the 120Hz of its big brother, it is always appreciable on a daily basis. So yes, that will not revolutionize daily uses but the gain in comfort is not negligible, especially when most of our consumption of content happens to be endless flows. On the Pixel 7 Pro, there is a 120h cooling rate and LPTO technology which allows you to adapt the frequency of the screen according to uses. As a reminder, the Pixel 7 Pro can lower the refresh rate to 10Hz to save battery.

On the sound side, there are stereos speakers that are very good overall. These are not the references on the market but it will have no trouble enjoying internet content without going through the helmet box or headphones. As usual, for longer content, we will necessarily favor a helmet or a speaker.

Android 13, performance and autonomy

Unsurprisingly, the new Google Pixel 7 are running Android 13, we will not come back on it since it is not a real novelty in itself since the latest version of Google’s OS has been available for some time now. As a reminder, Android 13 is an absolute revolution and is more like an evolution of Android 12.

There will therefore be no new revolutionary functions but rather optimizations for everyday life. In fact, it is in use that we will gradually see all the benefits since everything is optimized for. All the functions are launching much faster and it is suspected that the Tensor G2 to be the cause of all this in addition to Android 13.

On the performance side, the new Google Pixel 7 are embarking on the second home house in Google, the Sensor G2. From a pure power point of view, there is a power equivalent to a Snapdragon 865 or a Snapdragon 888. But where the magic operates is that you have to go more far from it than simple benchmarks. Compared to the Pixel 6, all Google functions are launching much faster and this is also the case for third -party applications. We tested some recent games like Diablo Immortal, Torchlight or Wild Rifts and no worries with details thoroughly. The smartphone does not normally heat (except for gourmet applications such as games).

And finally for autonomy, we ended up with the same problem as for performance. Indeed, according to our 01LAB tests, if the pixel 7 do not demerit, the results are not up to the best that are the iPhone 14. Now, as we know, autonomy benchmarks also have limits and do not necessarily reflect what a user experiences and it is a bit of our case since in use, we had the impression of having the same Autonomy that the iPhone 14 pro, which is excellent.

This once again demonstrates the optimization by Android Google compared to its new SOC, the Tensor G2. In our uses, in one day and even super loaded, we rarely end the day below the remaining 50%.

And finally, as a reminder, in addition to the 30W wired recharge, the Pixel 7 offer wireless charging (21W for the pixel 7 and 23W for the Pixel 7 Pro), always practical, and reverse recharge for your headphones For example. For the main camera, the ultra large angle and the front camera, it is the same thing on the two smartphones.

In addition, as we know now with Google, the force of the pixel is also the complementarity with computer assistance in the processing of photos. On the pixel, with each shot, let a small second pass, while the pixel applies its treatments at all costs and we get a successful photo.

With the new Tensor G2, the Pixel 7 even allow themselves to restore somewhat blurred photos taken with other smartphones in net photos. It’s just impressive. This is where we discover all the power of the Tensor G2, it is not so much its raw power but above all its treatment capacity mixed with Google algorithms.

Likewise, and without going into details, we discover all the power with the photos at the zoom of the pixel 7. The results are stunning and apart from Samsung which offers a 10x zoom on its ultra S22, the whole competition is submitted. Google’s ability to offer a software solution to a hardware problem remains impressive.

Otherwise we find the functions introduced last year with the Pixel 6 such as magic gum, movement mode, net faces, real tone technology for more natural skin colors, night vision or AF monitoring that videographers will love.

Unsurprisingly, the Pixel 7 offer impressive photos, with certainly a little colder colors than direct competition. Afterwards, it’s a matter of taste. Some will prefer the warmer and contrasting side of the Samsung while others like we will prefer as faithful as possible to reality.

The Pixel 6 were excellent and reliable, this is still the case with the Pixel 7. In photo, the pixel 7 are so reliable that it is really difficult to take them in default. We can really draw one of the two pixel 7 and trust them 100%. And if we have missed a photo, computer assistance gives a chance to make up for it, which the competition cannot offer.

On the Pixel 7 Pro, there is a periscopic zoom which allows you to have a 5x optical zoom and above all, this allows you to extend the Super Res Zoom technology to 30x. We can tell you, it’s just impressive. In 5x, it’s already good but it’s normal but what you get in 30x is just impressive. If we are looking for versatility at a lower cost, the photo block of the Pixel 7 Pro does wonders. And the thing that impressed us the most is the stabilization of the aim, even in 30x, is stubborn once again.

On the video side, Google continues to make progress. Last year, the Pixel 6 had already made a good manner but fished on the side of stabilization. We find the recording of videos up to 4K at 60fps and we are also entitled to a kinematic mode. Too bad it is limited to 1080p while the new iPhone 14s offer a cinematic mode in 4K. We also find Speech Enhancement technology which, using artificial intelligence, will recognize ambient sounds to focus essentially on the voice of the user or the filmed person. Practical.

And finally the selfie camera since Google has chosen to continue with ultra-angle, always more practical, but above all bigger sensors, which allows you to have better quality. We recall that at Google, we can film ourselves in selfie up to 4K too.
