Google announced the end of its video game streaming service Stadia and will close it January 18, 2023.

In a new blog message, the search engine company revealed that Stadia “did not win the traction with the users we expected”, and therefore, the company made the “difficult” decision to start reducing the service. Google will reimburse users who have bought equipment or games from Google and Stadia.

Stadia is Google’s cloud gaming service that allows users to stream video games, including AAA titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Cyberpunk 2077, directly via Google Cloud service. This means that it is not necessary to buy physical equipment as long as the player has access to Google Chrome. However, there is a dedicated controller that players can buy.

Google explains that the technoglogy behind Stadia has proven its power, and Google has already started to offer Stadia as a neutral product, which implies that other companies can use it without being part of the Stadia ecosystem.

AT&T for example uses Stadia in the USA to offer Batman: Arkham Knight to its customers for free, and Google specifies that tech can be used by other Google branches like YouTube, Google Play or its augmented reality projects.

The closure of Stadia therefore does not sign the death of video game streaming at Google or elsewhere. Xbox and Nvidia also offer solid solutions via the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce Now respectively. And Logitgech prepares its mobile device dedicated to cloud gaming called Logitech G.

By relying on good practices, successes and lessons learned from member countries having organized major international events, the Stadia project can help future host countries to prepare optimally by sharing with them the latest knowledge and skills in the material.
