Finally, the last sensor with ultra-angle objective is directly taken from the S21 (and the S20). Definition 12 megapixels. Target equivalent to 13 mm opening at f/2.2. 120 ° angle of view. He takes care of “super stabilized” videos, while his goal is the only one without optical stabilizer. At the front, we find the eternal selfie sensor 10 megapixels already crossed in 2021 and 2020. It is always associated with a goal opening to f/2.2. It is still equipped with a dual pixel autofocus.

Galaxy S22 vs Galaxy S21: what differences between the two Samsung smartphones ?

Samsung presented today the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra, three smartphones that succeed the high -end models of the output brand in early 2021. The standard model remains the most accessible. Positioned at the same price, what are the changes offered by this new version ? Are there improvements ? We answer all these questions in this fratricidal face to face.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 128GB

THE February 9, 2022, Samsung has unveiled its Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra smartphones, as well as its three Galaxy Tab S8, S8 and S8 Ultra tablets. You can find in our columns complete articles presenting these products, as well as a handling of smartphones (including a video that accompanies this article).

After discovering everything in detail, it is now time to let the frenzy pass and ask a few questions. The one that motivates the folder you are reading is: the Galaxy S22 is better than the Galaxy S21 ? A question doubly important. First of all because the price has not changed between the two models: 859 euros Or 909 euros Depending on the amount of storage chosen. Then because the Galaxy S22 remains the most affordable high -end model in Samsung. And therefore potentially the one you could choose more than the others. The stake is therefore important.

Samsung S22 / S22+ / S22 Ultra – Our grip and new features !

In this file, we will therefore enter into the details of the technical sheets and make comparisons between the 2022 and 2021 models. For each part of the folder (performance, connectivity, screen, design, battery, photo, etc.), we will choose What smartphone is the best. We will not approach the question of the price, since it is identical. Note however that some distributors will continue to offer the Galaxy S21 even with the outlet of the Galaxy S22, provided for March 11, 2022. With good deals in perspective.

Design

At first glance, the design of the Galaxy S22 is quite close to that of the Galaxy S21. At the front, you will find a beautiful touch slab with A punch in the center of the upper part of the screen. The corners are rounded and the borders are quite reduced. The screen is flat: no lateral borders curved again this year. But this is not a problem, because the readability is better as well and the phone is small enough to hold in hand.

Galaxy S22

At the back, you will also find a fairly similar photo block. Stuck in the upper left corner, It incorporates three objectives, the flash being dissociated and positioned to the right of the block. This module is protected by metal and each lens is slightly dug to avoid shocks. Finally, the module remains slightly protruding. So much for the similarities.

But there is a big difference which is even noticed by looking at the Galaxy S22 from the back: these are the slices. Indeed, the slices are now entirely covered with aluminum. This offers the Galaxy S22 a more massive appearance. Thanks to this outline which seems more reinforced, the Galaxy S22 seems to be more solid than its predecessor. The slices remain slightly concave, so as not to approach too much iPhone. In addition, consequence, the back of the phone is no longer curved, but completely flat.

The organization of technical elements on the slices remain similar: USB type-C port, speaker, main microphone and SIM drawer on the lower edge, volume control and right-of-right, secondary micro at the top. Finally, the S22 is slightly lighter (3 grams) and slightly smaller (5 mm in height, 0.6 mm in width and 0.3 mm in thickness). It retains protection IP68 and the Gorilla Victus in the front.

Verdict : the Galaxy S22 retains the same assets as its predecessor, while offering an evolution of design. The new aluminum outline, which covers all slices, seems to protect the smartphone against shocks and falls further. It’s an undeniable plus. The Galaxy S22 wins this round.

Screen

Now let’s talk about the screen. There is also change in this area between the two smartphones. And the first change concerns the size of the screen: it goes from 6.2 inch to 6.1 inches, explaining why the Galaxy S22 is physically smaller than its predecessor. The Galaxy S22 therefore takes up the screen size of the Galaxy S10. The screen ratio changes very slightly, going from 20/9 to 19.5/9th. The smartphone will therefore appear lower proportionally.

Samsung Galaxy S22 vs Galaxy S21

The screen size evolves therefore, but the definition remains the same between S22 and S21: Full HD+. This translates here by 1080 pixels in width and 2340 pixels in height. The S22 loses 60 pixels in height due to the change of ratio. So much so that the resolution does not change, it either: 422 pixels per inch. We are far from the 563 pixels per inch of the Galaxy S20. But it is not worse, since the S21 gained autonomy thanks to the decrease in definition.

Here we find a slab Dynamic AMOLED 2X, without surprise. A legacy of the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S21. Contrast rates should be excellent, as well as mastery of colorimetry. The slab is HDR10 compatible+. And its refresh rate is 120 Hz, without change vis-à-vis the S21. This rate is variable from 10 to 120 Hz depending on the content, a function previously reserved for more expensive models at Samsung. Also note that the maximum luminosity announced reaches 1,300 nits under certain conditions and in a very punctual way, as for the Galaxy S21.

Verdict : the screens of the Galaxy S21 and S22 are certainly equal to everyday. We expect the S22 to resume the excellent properties of S21 and further optimize color reproduction. On the other hand, the arrival of a variable refresh rate as on the Galaxy S21 Ultra is excellent news which promises an optimization of autonomy. The sleeve therefore returns to the Galaxy S22.

Performance

Due to their “high-end”, “premium” or “standard” status, the Galaxy S must excel in all, to meet all needs, even a population that does not necessarily use their Smartphone like all the others: gamers. For them, the screen and the autonomy are important. But the power of the platform is certainly more so.

Exynos 2200

Samsung therefore incorporates these best SOCs in the Galaxy S. Or, failing that, the best in its suppliers. In France, we will once again have the right to an exynos processor. Here, this is theExynos 2200 which will therefore replace the exynos 2100 of the Galaxy S21. With a first difference in size, literally and figuratively: the new SOC is engraved in 4 nm, promise of better energy management with equivalent power.

The Exynos 2200 is an octo-core with a configuration fairly close to that of its predecessor: a very powerful heart, three fairly powerful hearts and four energy-energy cores. The frequency of hearts is not necessarily higher than that of the hearts of the exynos 2100. On the other hand, it should be sufficiently optimized to offer an improvement in performance without increasing internal temperature or energy consumption.

Exynos 2200 also incorporates a new GPU developed in partnership with AMD. His name is Xclipse 920. It is based on RDNA2 architecture that you find in the last living room consoles, for example. It offers fairly high performance, which should however undergo a bridle to avoid overheating. It also has a new modem. We will come back to the characteristics of the latter later.

On the configuration side, the Galaxy S22 benefits from the same amount of RAM as the Galaxy S21, be 8 GB. It also has two storage levels in 128 GB and 256 GB. Like the Galaxy S21, the smartphone does not have a microSDXC port to extend internal memory.

Verdict : The Galaxy S21 is already a touched smartphone, capable of taking care of the majority of uses, even the most gourmet. Offering more power only concerns a marginal slicit of users. On the other hand, it would be interesting to know if the platform manages to master its heat and to keep its performance over time. In the absence of complete tests, We grant this round to the Galaxy S22 Because the exynos 2200 is engraved more finely, promise of better energy yield.

Battery

On the battery side, the Galaxy S22 benefits from a less important battery capacity than that of the Galaxy S21: 3700 mAh Against 4000 mAh. This represents a drop of around 7.5 %. Even if it may seem disappointing, it is not a surprise, since the smartphone is smaller. The capacity is however greater than that of the S10, which benefits from a screen of the same size. She only offered 3400 mAh. We must not necessarily expect a downward autonomy: the Galaxy S22 benefits from a SoC which should consume less energy for the same power delivered. But you will have to wait for the full test to check it.

Samsung Galaxy S22 vs Galaxy S21

To counterbalance the drop in battery capacity, Samsung could have equipped the Galaxy S22 with better load options. But this is not the case. The S22 uses the options of its predecessor identically: Fast wired load 25 watts And Qi or PMA wireless load at 15 watts. So there is no improvement. It’s a shame, because the S22+ benefits from a battery certainly decreasing, but a wired load revised upwards (45 watts).

As a reminder, the Galaxy S21 recharges 100 % in 70 minutes (and 50 % in 25 minutes) according to our 2021 statements. The Galaxy S22 should be able to recharge more quickly because the capacity of its battery is lower. But that will not reach the fast charge offered by certain Chinese brands, Oppo, Vivo, Realme or OnePlus for example.

Verdict : The battery of the Galaxy S22 does not benefit from any improvement with regard to that of the Galaxy S21. A back capacity. A quick charge that is not faster. Samsung has made efforts on its Galaxy S22+ that we would have liked to see arriving on the standard S22. This handle returns to the Galaxy S21.

Connectivity and equipment

Galaxy S22 equipment is quite classic. There is no great novelty to note. We find 5G compatibility, of course. Networks Nsa And HER are supported, as well as millimeter frequencies and more classic frequencies Under the 6 GHz. The smartphone retains its compatibility Wifi 6 Dual Band, But does not take the step towards 6th wifi. On the other hand, it benefits from connectivity Bluetooth 5.2, against Bluetooth 5.0 for the Galaxy S21. This is a good improvement that should reduce the latency of the TWS earphones.

Samsung Galaxy S22+

We find the sensor NFC (with Samsung Pay), as well as the sensor GPS compatible Galileo, Beidu, Glonass and A-GPS. We find the ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the screen, as well as the double loudspeaker, one on the front (with the telephone earphone) and one on the lower slice, next to the USB type-C port. The audio part is still AKG certified.

Verdict : Bluetooth 5 compatibility.2 is very good news for the Galaxy S22 which will gain autonomy (better management of the connection of the connection) and which will also enjoy a lesser latency with the wireless headphones. The handle returns to the Galaxy S22.

Photo

Last round of our face to face: photography. On this point, the Galaxy S21 brought nothing new. He simply resumed the equipment of his predecessor: main 12 Mp sensor with objective opening at f/1.8, 64 Mp sensor with stabilized “telephoto lens” opening at f/2.0 (it was not a real telephoto lens) and a 12 Mp sensor with ultra-wide-angle lens opening at f/2.2. And the results were pretty good.

Samsung Galaxy S22 vs Galaxy S21

This year, the Galaxy S22 benefits from a new configuration, always relying on three sensors, all very useful. The main sensor is a sensor 50 megapixels With Autofocus Dual Pixel, optical stabilizer and 24 mm equivalent objective and opening at F/1.8. Each pixel measures 1 micron. Or photos of 12.5 megapixels with a virtual pixel which measures 4 microns aside. Samsung’s strategy therefore resembles that of Oppo which has greatly improved the quality of its photos with the Find X3 Pro.

The secondary sensor is a model 10 megapixels associated with a Real telephoto lens and not a false telephoto lens with hybrid zoom. The objective is a 70 mm equivalent, offering a 3X optical zoom report. Telephoto obliges, it opens less large than that of the Galaxy S21: F/2.4. But that’s normal. A phase detection autofocus and an optical stabilizer complete this set.

Verdict : the Galaxy S22 seems to be better armed than its predecessor on the photo side. First with the adoption of a 50 megapixel sensor which promises more finesse in details without losing light. Then with a real 3X telephoto lens, the highest ratio in a small Galaxy S (the previous record is held by the Galaxy S10 and its 2X optical zoom). There are finally real good arguments at Samsung ! This handle obviously returns to the Galaxy S22.

Galaxy S21 vs Galaxy S22: which to buy ?

We come to the conclusion of this fratricidal duel. And of Many sleeves have been won by the Galaxy S22. Design, with these slices entirely covered with metal for better protection. The new processor that promises more power for graphics and better energy management. Lightly improved connectivity in Bluetooth level. The variable refreshing rate of the screen. And the new photo triptych which seems more suitable for measuring Chinese competition which dominates this discipline.

Galaxy S22 Series

These improvements are not made to the detriment of the price. And this is good news: The Galaxy S22 is offered at the same price as its predecessor, Whether it’s the 128 GB version or the 256 GB version. These are very good arguments in favor of this new generation of Galaxy S. S22 does not only have advantages. On certain points, he is behind with his predecessor. We are talking about the battery whose capacity is less important. On other points, it does not bring any evolution, such as recharging. In addition, we expect the Galaxy S21 to have a price drop after the arrival of its successor. He will only become more interesting.
