Future Renault 4: What we already know about the small electric SUV
It is with old cars that we make the best electricity ? This is obviously what Luca de Meo thinks. The Director General of Renault has indeed decided to revive two old diamond glories: the 4L and the R5. The two models will relive in 100 % electric. The 5 will be the first to return to concessions in early 2024. The 4 will arrive a year later. But we already know a lot about her. Automobile-proper takes stock !
What positioning in the range ?
This is the first surprise, which risks confusing some customers. The 4 will be larger than the 5 ! The 4 will actually be the SUV declination of the 5, as is the Captur for the Clio. The new 4L will therefore look like an urban adventurer. To justify this transformation, Renault recalls the versatile side of the first 4L, which was as comfortable on the bitumen of the city as in the countryside of the countryside. The car is also associated with a rally-raid reserved for young people, the 4L Trophy ! The series model should have a length of about 4.10 meters, while the future 5 will be a little below 4 meters.
What a look ?
It is largely already known thanks to the 4th Trophy concept, unveiled at the Motor Show in October 2022. Gilles Vidal had explained to us at the time that the serial version will be close to the prototype. Basically, we can keep everything that is the upper part, that painted in light gray, the lower part being exaggerated for the concept side.
Gilles Vidal had admitted that reinterpreting the look of the 4L was not as simple as that of the R5, because the 4L was simply not renowned for its design ! Hence perhaps less obvious parentage between the historic vehicle and the modern vehicle.
But we find the general silhouette, with the flat hood and the rear called “in angle”, the third side window in trapeze, the front wings that wrap around the wheel. The front side revisits the horizontal grille which includes rounded headlights. These will of course go to LEDs. The rear reinterprets capsules.
On board, it’s still the great mystery ! Nothing has been shown with the concept. This was already the case with the R5. The two series models should pool a lot of elements. We wait for the 4 a sense of practical aspect more developed.
What engine and autonomy ?
As said above, the 4 will be the SUV declination of the 5. So the two models will have the same basis, namely the CMF-BEV. This is the clio platform adapted to the electric motorization. For these models, Renault develops a new 100 kW electric motor, or 136 hp. A less powerful version is in preparation.
The two engines would each have a battery size. The 4ever Trophy concept had a 42 kWh battery. In series, it could be more. Renault’s goal is to have 400 km autonomy on the upper versions.
What prices ?
There too, customers may be confused. Some may think that the electric 4L will be an entry level, as was the 4L in its time. Which will therefore not be the case, since it will be greater than the R5 (and the role of Low-Cost electricity is devolved in the group to the Dacia Spring).
With modern 4 and 5, Renault intends to make the electric car more accessible, while a Zoé still starts at 35.100 € without the bonus. However, the task has complicated these times with the surge in materials, energy and transport. The 5 was promised at the start with a basic price of 20.000 € without the bonus. It should ultimately be 25.000 €. The 4 should therefore be a little more expensive, close to the 30.000 €.
What competition ?
The 4L should keep a reasonable template, around 4.10 meters. It therefore moves away from models like the Peugeot E-2008, Hyundai Kona. But a vehicle seems particularly in the viewfinder: the Jeep Avenger. It is also a small template, with close characteristics (156 hp engine, 400 km autonomy). He starts at 36.500 €. For its part, Fiat must launch an electric urban SUV derived from the Avenger, which will logically be cheaper. In addition, Citroën will launch an electric version of the new C3 Aircross in 2024. If the vehicle is to grow, its price could be aggressive and therefore close to that of the 4L.
What date of marketing ?
The 21st century 4L will be launched in 2025. We can hope for a presentation towards the end of 2024, on the occasion of the Motor Show. The car will be made in France, it will come out of the channels of Maubeuge, where Renault assembles the Kangoo.
And the utility derivative ?
It is not a 4L that will be back, but two ! Renault has indeed confirmed the launch of a new utility version, which could be named 4L vans. A teaser has shown that the model would have a hunchbacked silhouette as in the past ! Its role will be to play the Electric Access Utility at Renault, below the Kangoo, but also to bet on the more fun side.

A little ego war is currently preparing for Renault. Symbol of the Renaulution, the new electric R5 will not long remain the only “revival” in the diamond range. As early as 2025, another emblematic model of our ex-Regie will also try to vibrate the nostalgic rope. This is the 4L which, after having a few rumors was rumored, has been formalized last summer. From her, we still don’t know much, not even her name, Renault having simply placed the name “4thver” in January 2021.
But we are already able to offer you first images of this 4L of modern times. If our illustrations are largely based on patent deposits that have already leaked on the web, we must still be careful, because the drawing is not yet frozen. Thus, even if the 4L project does not date from yesterday, Gilles Vidal, new boss of the Renault style – always under the leadership of Laurens van den Acker – will have time to bring his touch.
True to the adventurous spirit
On the style side, winks at the 4L of yesteryear will be numerous, But this resuscitated variant cannot help but have recourse to a few SUV gimmicks like wheel arches, rocker panels and plastic shields. It is as much about surfing fashion as of finding the slightly adventurous spirit of the 4L of the time. On the other hand, with more than three decades between the last 4L “Made in Boulogne” and the first of the 21st century, no need to calculate the extent of the ditch on the technical level.
Like the R5, the 4L does not plan to use oil, but only to electricity. And to do this, will take over the new CMF-B/EV platform by Renault. In a more common language, it is simply the same base as the modified clio to accommodate the batteries in the floor. A logical choice to reduce production costs. Because like the “5”, The new 4L is wanted accessible, between 20,000 and 25,000 €.
400 km of autonomy
A fork that simple industrial rationalization does not allow to reach. To this, the 4L adds cheaper batteries to produce thanks to the use of a new chemistry LFP (lithium-fer-phosphate) much less expensive than lithium-ion technology. Thanks to this accumulator and a new Bobini rotor electric motor close to that of the Mégane, the new electric 4L should offer an autonomy of around 400 km. No clue has yet filtered on the power delivered by the whole, but we must expect performance similar to those of the last Zoé (110 or 135 hp). Produced in Douai, the 4L “Zero emission” should offer a little more habitability and modularity than the R5. A utilitarian side reinforced by the already announced arrival of a van declination in stride.

Renaissance of the 1960s, the new electric Renault 4 is a future model of small electric car from the brand with retro diamonds, cheaper than the famous Zoe. It should be presented on January 14 during the reborn strategic plan.
The electric Renault 4 is one of the new models entering the new strategy of the group unveiled in 2021. In the nostalgic movement in parallel with the new electric R5, it aims to revive an emblematic model. This model thus draws the name of the old Renault 4 nicknamed 4L, born in 1961 and manufactured for 30 years by more than 8 million copies.
Dimensions and style of the electric R4
The dimensions of the new electric R4 will be compact, that of a 5 -door city car. Without finding the 3.60 meters of its elder, it could go down within 4 meters. Renault should ride the retro wave, everything using modern lines with DIADE optics. The ambition could be to replace the Twingo Ze.

RENAULT 4 electric battery and autonomy
At a time when we write these lines, we do not know the technical characteristics. We will have to wait for the nature of the technical base, which could be the CMF-B Derived from the Clio Hybrid. The R4 could however resume the smallest engine of the Renault Zoe, and display a power of 80 kW/110 horsepower.
Two hypotheses are still possible for the battery. The electric R4 could opt for a 50 kWh pack in the ZOE (400 km of autonomy) or the new 40 kWh planned on the CMF-EV platform of the electric mega. Autonomy is expected between 300 and 400 kilometers.
Electric Renault 4 marketing and prices
Renault did not indicate the availability of this car during the last product plan. The latter having finally announced the Renault 5 at the end of the strategy, the electric Renault 4 could nevertheless arrive at 2025. It should aim for a price accessible to the image of its ancestor, around 20.000 euros, excluding aid for purchase.
