But at almost 1000 euros, the equipment of this connected projector is too low, because the preinstalled Tizenos OS is disconcerting slowness. Apart from these negative points, freestyle has proven to be an excellent concept for entertaining everywhere. Its installation is much simpler than that of mini traditional projectors and integrated speakers are really usable. The fact that freestyle can also turn into smart TV and a room light is really great. So I recommend it to you despite everything, if you find a good offer.

Design and finish

The Samsung Freestyle has a different design from mini traditional projectors. Indeed, Samsung has dismissed the shape of a box and placed the projector, the speaker and the brain of the Smart TV in a cylinder. This is based on a hinge at 180 degrees, which makes freestyle the most flexible video projector in the world. However, IP certification and a protective cover are desirable would be desirable.

If you have already used a video projector, you know it’s insufficient. Indeed, you will need an optional adapter to connect equipment such as a Blue-ray player or your laptop PC at Samsung Freestyle. It is also a shame that the USB-C port does not support the Thunderbolt and that you cannot therefore connect your laptop via USB-C.

During the test period, the positioning of the buttons on the front of the Beamer was also very annoying. These are touch surfaces that are difficult to recognize during use, because a super luminous LED lamp lights your face. It is therefore preferable not to lose the provided remote control, which resembles the Apple TV remote control and which is generally good work.

While the remote control is included, you will have to buy a protective cover to use the outdoor projector. This is quite expensive (59 euros), but is very good quality. If you are surprised by a downpour outside, you should quickly store the mini projector inside, because it has no protection against water and dust.

Image quality and automatic locking

The Samsung Freestyle uses LED technology and offers a maximum resolution of 1080p. With its 550 Lumens LEDs, it is quite dark compared to other mini-projectors, but can display 30 to 100 inch screen diagonals with great sharpness. Samsung announces a lamp life of 20.000 hours. With its 30 dB, operating noise looks like that of a noisy laptop fan.

I loved

• The 550 LED-Lumen too dark in daylight

On paper, the Samsung Freestyle does not make lovers of video projectors dream. Indeed, the 550 lumens LEDs and the maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 are at most average for mini-projectors, but during the practical test, the projector still convinced with a clear representation thanks to the autofocus and superb colors. In addition, there are many possibilities for adapting the image in the parameters.

What you will not have to worry about with freestyle is image locking. To do this, the manufacturer has integrated an autofocus, an automatic correction of the trapezoidal distortion and an inclination function. The shadow that appears naturally during trapeze corrections (after all, video projectors cannot project the light around the curve) is fortunately weak, even in the dark rooms.

However, it is a shame that Samsung has not yet integrated an optical zoom. Admittedly, you can reduce the image if it is too far from the wall (2.7 meters maximum), but you will then lose resolution. It is also boring not to be able to manually adjust the image rotation. During our test, we found that the image was displayed at an angle while freestyle was placed on a flat surface.

Connected and performance functions

The Samsung Freestyle turns under Tizenos. It is the same bone that animates the Samsung Smart TV. Fortunately, you will be able to access the Samsung TV Plus service, as well as to Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and many others applications and many others. This is where Tizen scores points, even if his performances are rather disappointing.

The Samsung mini projector scores points, especially with regard to multimedia capabilities and that is precisely why it was designed. Indeed, freestyle compensates for lack of connections by a colored bouquet of streaming content. In the vast Tizenos app store, you will find applications for all current media libraries and services as well as many mobile games.

In addition, with Samsung TV Plus, you will enjoy a free live television service on freestyle, which, during the test, curiously displayed the Bob series in the towel with each start -up. In addition to the square sponge chain, there are nearly 90 other channels that you can consult on the manufacturer’s website. Integration into the Samsung ecosystem is completed by TAP View and the connection to Smarts TV via the domestic WiFi network.

Now let’s talk about the integration of voice assistants. The Freestyle of Samsung is equipped with microphones that you can deactivate using a physical switch. Bixby or Alexa will then be ready to listen to your vocal orders. Another positive point: you can transform the video projector into a room lamp thanks to the protective cap supplied. For this, Samsung has installed some room screen saver on the internal storage of 2.5 GB.

Unfortunately, Samsung does not say more about the rest of the technical sheet. It’s a shame, because I would have liked to know which processor is responsible for disappointing performance. Because the performance of the Freestyle Samsung were lower than the average during the test. The web pages took to charge for several seconds in the Samsung Internet browser and there were always jerks. I told you about it in the video below.

If I had spent 1000 euros for freestyle, I might have returned it with such slowness. But it would be a shame, because the entertainment possibilities are really unique for a mini projector.

Sufficient and stretch speakers

The Freestyle is equipped with a 5 W speaker which is supposed to produce a 360-degree sound. It is also equipped with Dolby Digital Plus, the Sound Adaptive, Dialog Enhancement and Especially Bluetooth for the connection of external speakers.

The 5 W integrated speaker from the Samsung Freestyle does his job enough. By that I mean that you can mount the volume of films and series strong enough to understand the dialogues without having to listen carefully. At the same time, the speakers easily cover the noise of the freestyle fan.

The 360 ​​-degree sound that Samsung promotes does not however describe a 3D space sound, as I wrongly supposed. Instead, the sound comes out 360 degrees from all sides of the speaker. This function is especially useful for being able to orient the orthogonally on the floor video projector and project the image to the ceiling.

While I appreciated the possibility of being able to connect a Bluetooth speaker and even peripherals like a mouse and a keyboard, I personally miss the headphone jack. So I could not connect my analog stereo chain with a 3.5 millimeter jack adapter. It’s boring, but for Samsung, cables are obviously the sign of a lack of flexibility!

Autonomy: battery or not, it’s up to you to choose

The Freestyle Samsung has no integrated battery. According to Samsung, you have to buy a “battery base” which costs almost 180 euros or connect a power bank. I want to emphasize once again that The Freestyle was designed to be used everywhere flexible.

Selling a mini portable projector without integrated battery, it’s pretty courageous. Samsung rather offers investing an additional 180 euros in a Battery Base which is attached to the lower part of the projector.

You can also feed the freestyle with a power bank. However, he will have to bear an output power of 65 W, which the freestyle needs to operate. Autonomy of course depends on your power source, but the model that Samsung has sent us for this test can theoretically hold almost 8 hours in continuous reading with its 23,800 mAh. In summary, I must say that the Samsung Freestyle is a great product but much too expensive. Indeed, at significantly lower prices, there are for example anker models which offer a good bone in addition to being significantly more flexible thanks to integrated batteries. The Samsung model also has the advantage of being able to be placed more flexible thanks to its 180 -degree hinge and its automatic locking functions.
