Amazon call model, the Fire TV Stick Lite is a small streaming box sold at floor prices. However, it supports the majority of popular streaming applications (Netflix, MyCanal, Prime, Disney, etc.) for execution on Full HD TV.

Presentation

Amazon’s streaming family is enriched with an entry -level reference with the Fire TV Stick Lite. Sold around thirty euros – with recurrent promotions at € 20 – this small box takes up the “HDMI key” format inherent in the entire series of Fire TV Stick. We connect the housing directly to the TV, to an HDMI socket. Nevertheless, with its 8.4 cm long and 3 cm wide and 1.3 cm high, it is possible that it overflows on the adjacent HDMI sockets. Amazon has planned the blow and provided an HDMI extension of 5 cm for cases where the installation would be a problem.

The power supply of the housing still goes through a micro-USB connector positioned in the middle of one of the sides. A USB cable of a fifty meter is supplied and may be connected to a USB connector on the TV or on the 5 W sector adapter included – note that some televisions are not able to provide 1.5 to 2.5 W requested by the Fire TV Stick Lite. In this case, the use of the sector adapter is compulsory.

Connection

The Fire TV Stick Lite does not stand out from the rest of the Amazon sticks in terms of connectors: the latter is simply nonexistent, and one cannot connect neither network cable nor USB key. There is also no possibility of extending the storage space. The 8 GB present – including about 5 GB accessible to the user – remain sufficient to accommodate the different streaming applications.

Wireless connection focuses on the WiFi 5 support (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5.0. It is also possible to add an Ethernet adapter, sold apart from around fifteen euros, for cases where WiFi capture would be laborious.

Inside, there is a Mediatek MT8695D SOC similar to that used on the Fire TV Stick 4K. With a four -core processor (1.7 GHz), it also incorporates a powervr ge8300 graphical circuit. The RAM is however limited to 1 GB.

The Fire TV Stick Lite is satisfied with the Full HD (1080p) and HD (720p) television support with a maximum image flow of 60 i/s. HDR is borne in its HDR 10, HDR10+ and HLG variations, but Dolby Vision flows will not be taken into account (they run in SDR). Finally, the frequency of the video output can adapt to that of the video, an autoframerate option being offered in the options.

Remote

At this stage, the most diligent may wonder what differentiates the classic Fire TV Stick of the Fire TV Stick Lite. The answer is simple: the remote control. On this Lite version, the zapette is lightened. The slimming diet is not to be placed on the format account: we find the same black plastic dress of any quality as on the other Fire TV Stick and always a diet via two AAA batteries (supplied). No, the economy is simply on the absence of switching buttons dedicated to the control of the sound volume, as well as the four rapid launch buttons. The absence of an updating button and control button also ends with the impossibility of controlling the rest of its equipment (sound bar and television in particular) using the HDMI-CEC protocol. It’s a shame, but the reverse remains possible, however, by controlling the Fire TV using the remote control of your TV.

On the other hand, the microphone is still present, activated on demand via pressure on the dedicated button. This has the effect of launching Alexa, the Amazon assistant. The Fire TV Stick can then turn into a control center for your compatible connected objects Alexa, but also allow to launch multimedia content: “Alexa, launches the next episode of Squid Game”; “Alexa, show me romantic films” etc.

Amazon also offers an Android/iOS application. This allows you to get rid of the remote control while adding the possibility of using any smartphone or tablet to perform text entries. An appreciable point to type identifiers in the different applications.

Interface

Amazon has redesigned the interface of its Fire TV. The initial goal was it seems to get rid of the premium video monopoly in order to open up a little more to the other SVOD services, and this so to better stick to the codes established by the Apple TV 4K and the boxes Android TV such as chromecast with Google TV and Nvidia Shield TV.

This results in a home page with a banner that brings together the main user streaming applications – a choice that can be reorganized by the latter. On some of these applications, a simple overview of the icon makes it possible to obtain a banner located below the first. This then allows you to continue your views (following a film, following episode) and to consult personalized content for the application in question. When writing these lines, Prime Video, Netflix or Disney+ were compatible with this system, unlike MyCanal.

Reading content stored on the local network (NAS, computer) is possible with applications such as VLC, Plex, DS Video or MX Player. Finally, audio streaming platforms are also part with Spotify, Deezer or Tunein.

If the interface is now well thought out and complete, this is not fully palpable with the Fire TV Stick Lite. Limited RAM of this streaming box gives rise to jerky transitions and not frankly fluid scrolls. An annoying slowness when you want to sail quickly from one application to another, a certain latency can sometimes lead to false manipulations (double pressure on a button thinking that the first was not taken into account). Last regret: the presence of advertising banners that lead to commercial videos when click on it.

On the other hand, the execution of the videos is done without a hitch. The viewing of Full HD content takes place in a fluid way, including those whose flow is 60 i/s. On this definition, WiFi 5 is sufficient – starting from the postulate, however, that the wifi coverage of the accommodation is correct.

Some applications (premium, Netflix and YouTube when writing these lines) also offer cast functions like Chromecast or Airplay. The display of the contents of a smartphone or a tablet via Miracast is also offered. Not very practical to implement – each time you have to go to the parameters of the device – the method also gives rise to a LAG which makes manipulation slow.
