Smartphones
The SIM card has lived. From now on, each new request (subscription, renewal), operators systematically offer an on -board SIM to their customers.
1. What is an esim ?
Embedded Sim, or Esim, means “on -board Sim” in French. No more, the smart card to insert into the phone to access the mobile network ! ESIM is integrated into the motherboard of the device, such as memory and processor. More and more models are compatible, especially at Apple, Samsung, Google or Huawei. Sign of times, in the United States, the iPhone 14 no longer even presents the SIM card drawer; He only accepts ESIM. The traditional map will disappear, but the operators offer it as long as the Mobiles park, new and reconditioned, will require it.
2. Is it complicated to activate the line ?
No, just open the camera of the smartphone and aim for the QR code provided by the operator. One condition anyway: the phone must be connected to the Internet (in WiFi or via another SIM card) in order to load the package relating to the package. You must then enter the ESIM PIN code (0000 or 1234 by default; remember to change it in the settings).
3. What are the advantages ?
An ESIM compatible mobile can accommodate several lines at various operators. It is therefore possible to have two, a personnel and a professional. Or benefit from an advantageous subscription for calls from a first, a generous data offer in a second, and international calls in a third. Each package is managed by a profile and you easily go from one to the other. The number of esim that can be installed on a smartphone differs from one manufacturer to another. And if you change operator, you immediately get a CT code.
4. If I change the phone, what’s going on ?
ESIM of a package can only be activated on one phone at a time. If you change the device, it is essential to delete the ESIM profile of the old. It can be reactivated on another smartphone with the same QR code. An exception: certain prepaid offers dedicated to the trip (see also the box below). If your mobile breaks down without you being able to deactivate the E-SIM, you will have to ask your operator a new one. Note that ESIM is compatible with mobile portability: you have the right to adopt it for your main line without changing the number.
5. Going to ESIM, it’s free ?
No, Orange, SFR and others have kept their habits and charge € 10 activation fees for a new line or a renewal.
The perfect solution on a trip
Trying ESIM is adopting it, especially if you travel. Used in addition to your usual line, it allows you to stay reachable on your number and enjoy another line with a package adapted to your needs in your country of destination. You can opt for an ESIM on site, at a local operator or a specialist in travel (Gigsky, Upesim, Trunion, Ubigi, etc.). Prices are often better than the options of your usual operator.

Available both on iPhone and on Android phones, ESIM is now offered at all operators (Free, Bouygues, Orange and SFR). Here is a summary of everything there is to know about the esim.
With the iPhone 14 which has switched to full ESIM in the United States, more and more smartphones manufacturers offer compatibility with ESIM, while keeping the opportunity to insert a SIM SIM.
If you are lost in the face of this new technology, whether you want to know how to take advantage of it or if your phone is compatible or not, here is a folder to understand everything in virtual SIM. The subject is simpler than it seems, and it may well simplify your life. follow the leader.
What is an esim ?
ESIM means on -board sim. It is a technology present on relatively recent phones that allows a smartphone to do without physical SIM to insert to connect to the network and make calls. In short, it is a SIM card, but that does not need a SIM card.
Launched in France in June 2019 by Orange and SFR, then deployed more widely in 2020, ESIM is gradually installed in the landscape. If you are tempted by this solution, first check if you have a compatible smartphone and if your operator offers an ESIM package. Because yes, this is a separate package or an option offered by operators.
What are the smartphones compatible with ESIM ?
The first thing you need to consider before you even look at the prices with the operator of your choice is whether the phone you have (or the one you plan to buy) is compatible with ESIM. To help you, here are the main compatible smartphones capable of accomplishing this feat in 2023 (spoiler: these are often high -end models). Also note that few manufacturers integrate this option on a wide range of phones.

And connected watches ?
Some connected watches also offer ESIM compatibility. These are generally 4G versions sold more expensive than that offering only connectivity to the Internet via WiFi.
In general, your phone will serve as a 4G antenna for your connected watch. The use of an ESIM on a toceante is therefore reserved for those who would like to be able to use their watch in autonomy without smartphone coupled.
The demand is therefore too low for all operators to respond to it even if more and more manufacturers offer this option. Result, only Orange and SFR offer mobile packages for connected watches, while Bouygues and Free have their turn. The development of ESIM on smartphones should facilitate its deployment on other types of devices in the years to come.
Here are the latest models of 4G compatible connected watches:
- Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Series 7 Cellular and Apple Watch SE (2022) Cellular, Apple Watch Ultra;
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic in their 4G version;

Today, all historical operators (SFR, Orange, Bouygues and Free) and their branches lowcost (Red by SFR, Sosh, B & You) offer ESIM mobile packages. The procedure is simple: when you subscribe to a new package, you just have to request the ESIM option to start the transfer.

Note that if you want to keep your current package, it is also possible to request a renewal of the SIM card to an ESIM. Most operators offer such a transfer.
How to activate the ESIM card on an Android or an iPhone ?
That’s it, you have just taken out a subscription to an operator for a package with ESIM or request the transfer from a SIM card. To activate it, nothing could be simpler. Your operator will provide you with a scanning QR code with your camera via the “SIM card manager” menu then “Adding a mobile package” (on Samsung).
Let us add that if you are a user of an iPhone, the maneuver is significantly the same, but you will have to go through the settings – Cellular data – Add a cell package.
If the QR code does not work, your operator will also provide you with two codes to enter your phone manually.
Once the ESM is configured, you will have to type the PIN code, by default 0000. And there you are, you just have to restart the phone and ESIM will work.
Note that most of the time, operators will ask you to confirm activation on your customer area.
How to delete or transfer an ESIM ?
If you want to change your phone or just take out a new subscription, you could of course find how to deactivate your ESIM profile. Indeed, it is no longer enough to bring an extractor tool and remove the physical sim card.
Some operators like Orange asks you to first launch an ESIM to Esim renewal from their customer area and especially not to delete the profile on the old phone. Indeed, it must still be able to receive the confirmation SMS to secure the transaction.
Among other operators (Free, SFR or Bouygues), the procedure is simpler. You will need to delete ESIM from the old mobile and then scan the QR code again with the new mobile from the customer area.
To delete ESIM from the old mobile, you only have to go to the menus again where you have configured your ESIM: “SIM card manager” at Samsung and “Cellular data” on the Apple Apple. There, when you select the package to delete, the option is offered to you.
ESIM, how it works ? What a difference between Sim and Esim ?
The idea behind ESIM (not to be confused with the isim) is quite simple: rather than integrating a physical sim card, the user can activate a SIM already present in the device. This is the reason why it is impossible to add this option to a device that does not already have it, since it is a hardware functionality.
Let us add that ESIM takes up much less space than a classic nano. We go from a 12.3 x 8.8 mm format in nano to something around 6 x 5 mm.
The main difference between ESIM and classic SIM is therefore above all a question of occupied space in the phone, but also of installation procedure. In practice, a physical sim card changes with an extractor tool while you can change ESIM package without physical intervention on the phone, simply by installing the ESIM profile. This is the main difference.
