Fairphone 4 test: The ecological and modular smartphone becomes more convincing

The Dutch firm Fairphone returns with an even more ambitious fourth version of its ethical smartphone. If the brand’s DNA has not changed, the Fairphone 4 displays a serious upmarket.

Presentation

Since 2013, Fairphone has been manufacturing smartphones designed to last, while declaring to respect the maximum of environmental constraints. The adventure of the Dutch firm continues today with the Fairphone 4. A model which, without forgetting the fundamentals of the brand, intends to guide it to the future. This is the first in the range to be compatible with 5G.

In addition to its connectivity, this model also opts for a much more efficient chip than before (the Snapdragon 750g), and even for a double photo module. This redesigned technical sheet has no major impact on its greatest advantage: its modularity. Thus, it is always possible to change a large part of the parts which composes it much more easily than in competition.

But this ethical choice has a cost. Brand smartphones have seen their prices increase over time. This fourth version is sold € 579 in its 6/128 GB version and € 649 for the 8/256 Go model. Significant sums, which allow you to obtain a mid -range smartphone without problem with competing brands. The interest of comparing it with the latter being zero and its price explains largely by the manufacturer’s ecological approach, it seems to us more relevant to compare it to less expensive, but comparable smartphones at the technical level. We can cite the northern one in this 5G, the Oppo Find X3 Lite or the Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite.

Ergonomics and design

Fairphone has never really shone by their design, and this model is no exception to the rule. The general appearance is therefore quite austere, even if there is better. The photo modules are thus better integrated than before.

On the other hand, the device has seriously gained weight compared to series 3 and 3+. With its dimensions of 162 x 75.5 x 10.5 mm and its 225 grams on the scale, it is one of the heaviest in its category. It is therefore mainly intended for two -handed use. Fortunately, the front side occupies more space than before (80 % against 73 % for Fairphone 3) and is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Despite its great modularity, the device displays an IP54 certification and respects the MIL-810G standard. We can therefore expect good resistance to shocks and dust, but not to the water.

The fingerprint sensor, once placed on the back, is this time located on the edge. It is effective and rapid in use. It falls well under the thumb, which is not the case with the buttons dedicated to the volume, placed above. The smartphone has a drawer for a nano-sim, but is also compatible with an E-SIM. We also appreciate the presence of a location for a microSD card in order to extend the initial storage. The 3.5 mm jack has disappeared. It will therefore be necessary to equip yourself with an adapter, USB type-C compatible headphones or a Bluetooth solution. The mono speaker, also removable, is of fairly average quality. It lacks in particular power, even if that will be enough for viewing videos.
