Essay – Kia Ev6 (2022): 1.000 km with the Propulsion version
The last car of the year, the Kia Ev6 exists in four and two motors. But in both cases, Kia claims a “fun to drive” car, even at entry -level level. And for good reason, the cheapest version is pure propulsion. So let’s go for 1.000 kilometers aboard one of the most futuristic models on the market.
The Kia Ev6 is talked about at the moment. The problems of the first copies are multiplying and unhappy customers are unleashed on the networks … and on the editorial box of the editorial staff. So we decided to leave for 1.000 km of trial at the wheel of the car of the year 2022. After trying the four -wheel drive version when launching, it is time to go behind the wheel of the entry -level version, in propulsion. This has an electric motor of 229 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque, supplied by a 77.4 kWh payload battery, such as the four-wheel drive version. It is more than its cousin the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and it allows to display an autonomy of 528 km according to the Homologation WLTP cycle. It is about fifty kilometers more than its counterpart from Hyundai, obtained thanks in particular to low lower consumption.
On paper, everything seems honest, despite the fairly substantial weight of the machine: almost two tonnes. The 0 to 100 km/h is displayed in 7.3 seconds, against 5.2 seconds for the four -wheel drive model. It’s already enough for an electric crossover of this size. This already allows you to scare a few German sedans in the red light. For those who want to atomize Porsche, we will have to wait for the GT version (and not the GT line as our test model), which will offer 584 horsepower. On the other hand, if our Ev6 of the day has “only” 229 horsepower, it already has a look which does not go unnoticed and which already benefits from a little sportiness thanks to the GT Line finish.

Always the same
Atypical, this is the word. At first glance, we did not know how to define it: 5 -door sedan, coupé SUV … or crossover ? With its fairly high position, its 5 doors and its elongated silhouette, Kia agrees by selling the Ev6 as a crossover. Our propulsion version does not aesthetically change. But thanks to its GT Line finish, we are entitled to specific shields with a more sporty look, with turntable windows at the rear, with matrix LED lights and scrolling indicators, as well as 19 -inch rims. On the other hand, the GT Line benefits as a series from the functionality and the V2L socket which allows you to use your EV6 as a giant battery.
On board, our Ev6 GT Line benefits from a leather upholstery, heated seats at the front and the rear (already on the lower level) but also ventilated. At the front, the seats are adjustable electrically and that of the driver even has the position of positions of positions. For the rest, the cabin is identical, we always have the large digital slab on which we find both the infotainment system and the on-board instrumentation behind the steering wheel. 12.3 inches each, these screens really modernize the cabin that cultivates this futuristic side. But without forgetting the practical aspect and the optimization of the space.
Top habitability
When you do 1.000 km with a car, as much as it is practical. And above all you need room in the trunk. With a little filming equipment in the trunk, a few more things, there is room left. The 480 liters of loading volume seem sufficient, even for a family of four. Besides, we can go to 1.300 liters by withdrawing the rear seat, and transforming the EV6 into a moving. But that would be to deprive itself of the rear places including the one in the middle is usable. Indeed, the absence of a transmission tunnel makes it very practical: it feels comfortable, almost as much at the rear as. And it is not given to all cars in the segment ! Only large templates may feel cramped at the head, but not at the knees.
In short, we travel without problem with several. Even more in our propulsion version which offers a small chest in front of 25 liters since it does not need to house engine on the front axle. Practical. But who says propulsion, also says sportiness and agility. Especially since Kia makes us the promise that the Ev6 is “fun to drive”, even in entry -level version. We no longer hold, we must check.

At Kia, some thought that a car title of the year for the EV6 was not enough. The arrival of the GT version, with 585 hp, sounds like a real little provocation fully assumed. The Ev6 GT becomes the most powerful Kia ever produced, and arises as an annoying rival for the stars of the electric. Our test.
Piled in early 2022 by the European press, the Kia Ev6 passes for a real rolling curiosity. First Korean and first electric to receive the prestigious title of car of the year, the atypical crossover, halfway between large compact and SUV, especially caught attention by its technological content shared with its cousin Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The 800V architecture of the EV6 indeed allows record charge powers for the category, up to 350 kW in peak, allowing to go from 10 to 80 % of battery in 18 min. in theory as always (possible on an ionity terminal, much less outside the network). Performance, however interesting, since you have to eye on the much more expensive cars to take advantage of such fast refills (apart from Korean, Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan are the only ones to have an 800V network to date )).
The daily reality is less spectacular since on a classic AC terminal, the power does not exceed 11 kW. It is then necessary to count more than 7 hours for a complete cycle (sufficient for users who will load at night or at their place of work for example).
Externally, large 21 -inch rims and brakes are the main clues. For the rest, the Ev6 GT retains the same 800V architecture and the 77.4 kWh battery known on the classic versions.

Passing these ability to sip the KW, the EV6 GT challenges for anything else. His chronos, almost athletic ! The electric has the interest of being able to easily reach high power and very high torque values. Here, 585 hp and 740 Nm in support. Accelerations are the same barrel: only 3.5 s from 0 to 100 km/h, and up to 260 km/h, preferably on Autobahn. Clearly, these figures place it far ahead of a basic Taycan which begins at 91.055 €, and shoulder to shoulder with a Porsche Taycan GTS, almost twice as expensive (137.€ 847). For this price, we can therefore offer an Ev6 GT and a boxter S (with a flat-6 atmo). Or a new alpine A110, you will see.
What’s new on the Ev6 GT ?
That a kia competes with a Porsche or an Audi at more than 100.000 € is therefore quite new. Technically speaking, the Ev6 GT has put the small dishes in the large ones: it derives from the Ev6 4 wheel drive, provided with two electric motors (one per axle), whose combined power is increased to 585 hp (367 hp for the rear, 218 hp at the front). On the other hand, the battery remains identical, with a net capacity of 77.4 kWh. The autonomy announced is therefore not exceptional compared to the more modest versions of the EV6, given the level of performance and the imposing weight (2.185 kg). The 424 km in the mixed cycle are however achievable, provided you remain rigorously away from the rapid axes. and avoid enjoying the generosity of the available cavalry ! But it’s tempting.
In GT mode, we have the maximum power: 585 hp, and flash accelerations at the key ! 3.5 s from 0 to 100 km/h, it speaks. in moderation, however, and avoiding the highway if we want to preserve the autonomy.
Visually, the GT is distinguished by a few specific body elements and especially by the large 21 -inch rims of Pilot Sport 4S, which barely hide imposing brake discs (380 mm front, 360 mm rear) pinched by stirrups fluid. Question look, the classic Ev6 was already not particularly discreet. There, the pedigree is displayed ! Same thing on board, where two buckets take place (good support for that matter). The layout of the cockpit remains similar, however: rather refined, with a large double digital slab with the instrumentation and the media interface. Only notable nuance: a small “GT” neon button, at the bottom of the steering wheel, allows you to scroll through driving modes.
A sharp GT, but not sporty. The weight, always !
As expected, accelerations and reminders literally stick to the seat. Brutal, from the start ! In any case in the GT mode, allowing to exploit the maximum power. Hardly more surprise, the push is linear, powerful but not really explosive. Like a big grip that grabs you and takes you to roller coaster. on a rail. Kia has thought of programming an incongruous “drift” function, making it possible to send all the power to the rear axle with sleep driving aids, but the system quickly reminds us of order. The Ev6 is too heavy to be mistreated.
Heavy (almost 2.2 tonnes), imposing, the Kia Ev6 in principle has nothing sporty. Kia managed to make a terribly effective and easy to lead a debt a debt. Comfort remains excellent despite the chassis adjustments.
The chassis took advantage of a completely neat update: the suspensions are calibrated to hold the car firmly, without excess, while preserving a touching of the muffled road as possible. Including in GT mode, which stiffens the row of 30% compared to “normal” mode. The car is healthy, the almost erased movements changing support (on the roads of Sweden, it was however delicate to shake it up) and, for once, the braking seems almost natural. In general, we plague on variations related to recovery. The maximum level, very drawing (up to 150 kW), is however confusing and not easy to dose.
Once after the surprise effect of canon stops, this big crossover (4.70 m long, for a wheelbase of 2.90 m) is therefore neither a player nor very demonstrative. However, the result is a formidable GT, surprisingly precise and easy to lead (very) quickly. Under these conditions, the average consumption estimated at 20.6 kWh / 100 km is to be forgotten. During our test, including a passage on the circuit allowing to gauge your behavior, we have rather come close to 22 kWh. Suitable, given the rhythm sometimes inflicted.
Main asset of the 800V platform: load capacity up to 350 kW in peak, allowing record charges. Provided you find an ionity terminal, and that the network is as much as possible.
Prices and rivals: Tesla Model Y and BMW i4, its best enemies
In addition to the duo e-tron GT-Taycan, with more exclusive and sporting positioning, the Kia Ev6 GT finds more direct competition in front of it. Set at 72.990 € all inclusive (the only option is the heat pump, at 1.€ 400), the price places Korean in the same sphere as a certain Tesla Model y. There, the match is more delicate: the model performs there almost as strong (0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 s), claims a higher autonomy (514 km) and especially has the Tesla ecosystem, with its network of superchargers. It is also a little cheaper, starting at 69.990 €. In a more traditional and dynamic genre, BMW also aligns its i4 M50 of 544 hp. A little less swift and barely more expensive (73.€ 750), but provided with a larger battery (80.7 kWh Nets, 520 km WLTP).

Of course, faced with Taycan or Tesla Model S stars, the explosive Korean presents an enticing price / performance ratio. Much less in front of its direct rivals. The GT is even, perhaps, the least competitive in the EV6 range. Its interest is elsewhere: the Ev6 GT is a sympathetic and impressive technological showcase for Kia.
