BMW i5: finally an electric break capable of traveling ?

Family break is the poor parent of the electric car. While zero emission models are multiplying in all manufacturers, only two of them offer a 100% electric station wagon. Between the MG5, with an electric hearse, and the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo, this is also the big gap since 60,000 euros separate the most expensive version of the Chinese from the most affordable German breaks. The situation could change, not so much as a price difference, although, but in terms of diversity. In 2023, it was BMW who will arrive on the segment with an i5 touring that promises to make noise.

Indeed, the electric version of the 5 Break series should fill a void: that of a station wagon capable of making long distances. Because neither the MG5 and her small battery, nor the Taycan and its gourmet consumption can claim to be large roads. The i5 Touring should have a huge 100 kWh battery allowing it to travel more than 600 km with a load. Based on a 400 V architecture, it can also count on interesting charging capacities (200 kW to the maximum).

2023, the year of the electric station wagon ?

If the major characteristics of the i5 are already known, there are still a few gray areas on technical choices and on the declination of the range. Indeed, if the basic version of the i5 should embark an electric motor (about 300 hp) and a slightly less than 80 kWh battery, doubts exist on the more muscular versions. Indeed, BMW would hesitate on the number of engines to integrate (3 or 4) for the most prestigious versions and in particular the long -awaited i5 m.

Expected for the current 2023, the i5 break will not be the only representative of this family loss. Still on the German side, Audi should also return to the segment with a variation of his A6 e-tron. As for a possible Break version of the ID.Aero, the “electric passat”, it is not yet on the agenda. Finally, he remains of course Mercedes, a must -see player in thermal break. The star brand could have envisaged versions in the big trunk for its EQE and its EQS, but it preferred to transform them into SUV.
