Ecojoko: connected sensor test which analyzes electricity consumption

Thanks to Linky counter which now equips most households in France and The Enedis application Accessible to anyone with this counter, it is already possible to follow their daily electricity consumption. But there are limits. We only consult it up to date and not in real time. On the other hand if the overall consumption of the day before is known it cannot make a distinction between the consumption of one device or another.

Technically this is however possible as the Ecojoko device offers. Based on the signatures of the electrical signals of the devices, it can differentiate the devices and indicate whether the consumption comes from a cooking station, the household appliances or the supply of the hot water tank. We had the opportunity to install it to see concretely how it works.

Installation: within everyone’s reach

Concern with this type of device as soon as it comes to electricity, is that of the installation procedure. The designers promise, however, that this is done in a very simple way. Indeed, apart from the screws if you want to hang the elements on the wall, which remains optional, nothing very technical is included in the package.

There is the dial which reports the information and its power supply, the sensor and its box in which the batteries are already placed (2 years of autonomy), as well as an ethernet cable if you want to connect the dial in this way rather than ‘with domestic Wi-Fi.

The Ethernet port of what is called “the assistant” is located at the back of the device next to the one where the power cable is plugged in.

This assistant can be fixed to the wall, but another accessory also allows it to be placed on a piece of furniture. In any case, it will have to be near a sector outlet. As this device also raises temperature and humidity, it may be interesting to place it in a place of life, far from heating and windows if you want to obtain coherent values.

The three buttons on the device allow you to navigate between the four main screens or to vary the different data displayed.

The sensor and its box are more imposing, but should not necessarily be installed in a visible place. The sensor is fixed with an adhesive on the circuit breaker and the accompanied batteries can also be placed or hung on the wall.

Commissioning

All these indications are provided by the Application Assistant who guides us first to connect the dial to the Wi-Fi network of the house. A CT code on the dial allows you to configure the connection.

We are then guided to fix the sensor on the circuit breaker. This is placed above or below to capture the electrical signal. As specified, it is not the Linky counter, but the general circuit breaker of the house.

Finally, information is to be completed concerning the current type of contract at the electricity supplier and the indications relating to the Linky account. It is easy to find them thanks to the Enedis application by creating an account if you have not yet taken the process.

Application and measures

Without waiting, the assistant reveals the first information. The main dial displays current consumption in real time, but also the temperature and the humidity of the part.

We find this same information on the application with access to history.

But Ecojoko can do much more than that. After installation it is necessary to wait at least 7 days to see the savings made from one week to the next and 21 days to access the consumption analysis according to uses. It can thus detect the energy used for heating, cooking or household appliances.

This gives time to navigate in the different options. We discover in particular that the Ecojoko can also take into account the consumption of gas even if no sensor is dedicated to the measurement. The user is invited to enter their meter reader regularly so that the application can make an estimate of the savings made.

In the menu there is also a classification system that will allow you to locate your accommodation compared to other Ecojoko owners. Messages inform you of notable facts such as drops or economy records.

The most interesting after the three weeks of observation required is the analysis of consumption. Even if it is a known fact, it allows you to check that heating is a significant expenditure item, such as cooking or filtration of a swimming pool. The dial that displays real -time measurements is very useful and makes it possible to question what causes a consumption peak when you see the figures panic.

Thus, when the oven is switched on or when a washing machine heats the water you can see consumption increase in real time. We also get into the game by observing the waltz of numbers when the television or a computer is turned on or off. This allows for example to realize that the lighting finally has a fairly low impact compared to multimedia or household appliances gourmet in energy in energy.

A retro look assistant

Ecojoko is in the form of two separate modules. The first is the sensor which consists of a plate serving as a sensor itself and a case which allows the transmission of information. The second module, a small round box with a retro look, is the assistant.

It rests on a discreet metal foot placed on the back, knowing that it is possible to simply hang it on a wall. An installation as simple as fast

The installation is done in two stages, first of all the sensor and then the assistant. In both cases, you will need the Ecojoko app.

The latter accompanies you with very well-made and simple and simple to implement.

Sensor installation

Ecojoko is a product designed for the general public and does not ask for any tools. Thus, to install the sensor, you will have no electrical connection to make. It notes the electrical signals issued at the circuit breaker and then sends them to the assistant. The manufacturer explained to us that each electrical device emits a different signature and all the intelligence of Ecojoko is to interpret them. The small rectangular and white plate of the Ecojoko sensor must simply be installed on the circuit breaker. It is held by an adhesive surface and connected by a cable of about one meter to the case which is responsible for transmitting information to the assistant. Be careful, it is quite large and may not hold in all electrical chests. This done, we are going to the second stage of the installation.

Ecojoko assistant installation

The first thing to do is to choose a strategic place where to place the product. Don’t take this lightly. Indeed, the housing provides access to all the information without going through the app. By placing it in a place where all members of the home, including children, can read the information displayed, this helps to engage a positive dynamic. Indeed, everyone can then take over the product, see the level of consumption, possible overconsumption, and then act.

The installation is simple. Once electrically connected, a QR code appears on the LCD screen. Scan it with the app and the equipment will be automatically. All you have to do is enter the information related to your electrical subscription (type of subscription, operator, power, off -peak hours, etc.). Then, the app asks you to enter your counter on the day of the installation, then 24 hours later and finally 15 days after. This is used to calibrate the ecojoko. Note that it takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks so that the product can give you information on the ventilation of your electricity consumption.

A clear and above all playful app

The Ecojoko app is very simple to handle and each screen is as clear as easy to understand. The reception reproduces the display of the physical assistant, needles included.

By pressing the icon Menu Upper left, you have access to more detailed information. The page Measures displays your consumption per year, month, week or hour per hour in a day. You can even have access to temperature and ambient humidity. Informative and motivating despite a lack of precision

To be really interesting, you have to integrate the ecojoko into a daily routine for the entire home. The display on the screen of consumption in real time and the level of energy saving is really well thought out. Even children can integrate this information very simply.
