10 things to know before buying a Kindle on Amazon

I was asked a few questions about Kindle following my other article and I realized that I knew a lot about Kindle.

I’ve been reading ebooks for almost 5 years. I had to buy 3-4 pounds in paper just for the pleasure of leafing through them but having to part with it when I bought them, pushes me more to buy ebooks, so I can keep them and read them down as much once I want, wherever I am.

This article talks about The Kindle reader but also the Amazon Kindle service in general.

1. You can use Kindle without buying the Kindle reader

There is Kindle and Kindle.

Kindle is an Amazon service where we can read ebooks (paid or free) (Download the Kindle apps here)
The Kindle reader, sold by Amazon, is a reader (a material) on which we can read ebooks (Amazon link of my reader)

For example, when you are interested in a book on Amazon, they offer the paper version or the Kindle version. In general, the Kindle version (ebook) is cheaper even if the content is exactly the same, but they do not lose money to print it and deliver it to you.

If you buy the Kindle version of the book, you can:

Read on Kindle applications (available on iOS, Android, Mac and PC). You just have to install it on your device and enter your Amazon identifiers to access it.
Read on your Kindle reader

Kindle reader, on the other hand, is a machine that can connect to WiFi. The latest versions are tactile. It is larger than a smartphone but smaller than a tablet. It is more pleasant for the eyes than a smartphone type screen because they use electronic ink to simulate a paper book. You can choose to shed light or not to read better in the darkness. So you can see that without the Kindle reader, you can still read the ebooks bought on Amazon via an app.

2. You can read books on Kindle without subscribing

Amazon offers a Kindle subscription offer at € 10 per month, to access without limit to their base of a million titles. But they are often old books. I advise against to take this subscription. In addition, many of these books are also accessible for free with a prime subscription (see. point 3) so make a list of books that interest you and look at that they are included in the Kindle subscription before opting for this option.

It is better to buy your books one by one.

3. There are lots of free ebooks on Amazon

You can access free books in two ways:

Either you have access to old works (Maupassant type), which have entered the public domain, and you can see the list here
Either you have access to your Prime subscription. Basically, you can “borrow” them for free until your premium subscription does not expire. You can access the list here. This list is more interesting because there are rather recent and high quality books (e., the entire Harry Potter collection is available). To find them on the apps or on the reader, it’s still a little difficult because it looks like Amazon hides them, so use a computer rather.

4.We can import our own ebooks

How to import ebooks on the Kindle library ?

As explained, we can import our own ebooks locally (that is that ebooks will only be available on the computer’s Kindle app, or that Kindle reader). But what I like is to have all the synchronized and available books everywhere. And for that, it is necessary that All books are in my Kindle library. - From the smartphone:
  - Download the Kindle app. As soon as you read an interesting article or post, click on “Share” then select the Kindle app. The article in question will be converted to “Kindle book” and will be available on your Kindle library.
  - Likewise, by opening a PDF or DOC file on the smartphone, you can also click on the “Share” button then choose the Kindle app. The document in question will be converted to “Kindle book” and will be available on your Kindle library
  For example, there are several “practical guides” articles on our world Tour du Monde 5 continents site. You can transform these practical guides (from your browser) into Kindle format to reread it in offline later, just in 4 clicks.

  5. You can import ebooks Kobo and Google Play on Kindle
  
  Yes, it is quite possible. If for any reason you can’t find your book on Kindle (it’s quite surprising but why not) or the book in question is cheaper On Kobo or Google Play, you can export these books.
  
  The export formats offered will be PDF or EPUB protected by DRM.

  I bought the version with White advertising (Amazon link) (the advertising version is not available for two months). In reality, advertising is not embarrassing because we only see it when the Kindle is in standby.
  
  But if it bothers you that much, we can easily Disable advertising later by going to his account and By paying an additional € 10. For that :
  1. Access your content and devices.
  2. Select Devices.

  This is what I do with travel guides. The extract often stops right after the 7 -day / 14 days routes (aka the part that interests me). And since I really don’t need precise explanations, and rather interests “top 10 places not to be missed in such a country”, I buy very few guides finally.
  
  If at the end of the extract, You want to buy the ebook, you can do it From the Android app, from the Kindle reader, but Not via the iOS app or computer apps Because it is a question of integrated purchasing costs for Apple or Windows
  
  8. You can return a book up to 14 days after purchase
  
  Sometimes the extract is top but after buying the whole book, we realize that the rest is not up to. So how to do when you have already paid Amazon to buy the whole book ?

  9. You can lend your ebooks
  
  Even if the ebooks are virtual, they can be lent.
  
  The loan functionality of Kindle books allows users to lend, their family and their friends, the digital books they bought in the Kindle store.   10. You can update your book for free
  
  If a book you bought has a new edition (often to correct bugs, layouts or spelling mistakes), Kindle will offer you the new version for free, without losing what you have added as notes or underlints. To do this, go to Amazon and locate books where it is marked “update” or “update”.
  
  If you are on the Kindle application or the reader, Kindle will ask you to delete the book of your device and the retaler. Please note, choose delete the device And NOT from the library.
