10 things to know before buying a Kindle on Amazon

On the book product sheet on Amazon, we see that there is a “leaf” button

What is the price of an ebook ? Price of a digital book and advice to fix yours

What is the price of an ebook? Price of a digital book and advice to fix yours

You have finished writing your e-book and you want to sell it. How to set the right price and be sure of the right pricing policy ? Before you embark on the sale of your work, some rules are to be known, vis-à-vis competition but also of the laws. So what is the price of your ebook and how to make this amount attractive in the digital book market ? We tell you everything !

How to set the price of his e-book ?

Fnac, Cultura, Kobo, Amazon: Price policy on online bookstores

To be able to fix the price of e-book sound, the first indicator to observe will be the digital book market. There are many ebooks. So you can easily Consult the categories that join those of your ebook to determine the prices set by the platforms And thus choose the right price strategy. Short texts or the size of the different volumes of the “Lord of the Rings”: Watch out for the size of digital books as well as the types of content offered ! This technique will give you an idea of the price range as well as the average sale price to be able to determine the price of your digital book.

Offer a cheaper price for download than in paperback

As you can see on the Fnac website, ebooks on Amazon Kindle or even Cultura, the prices of digital books are much lower than the prices of brochure versions or pocket versions. The idea is not to block on an exact percentage between paper and digital versions, but to adapt to readers who are used to not spending more than € 10 in the purchase of a digital book. You will be able to see that most publishers practice ebooks rates between 5 and 10 € maximum, or even less than 5 euros sometimes. As an independent or self-publishing author, determine the right price for your digital book by calculating your profits and the margins that you can release on the different platforms, An intermediate price between your ideal and most attractive price for your readers. You can also imagine temporary promotion campaigns to invite the first readers to discover your work. Determine an interesting psychological threshold, such as € 2.99 to start: you can change this low price at any time once the sale of your work launched.

Respect price limits dictated by law

Be careful to respect the rules with regard to the price policy of your digital book. Did you know that the price of your work must necessarily end with, € 49 or, € 99 ? In France, the law of the single price or LANG law supervises the fact of fixing the price of a book on the market. Whether in paper or digital formats, a single price must be given by the publisher or the author. This fixed price must be applied to all sales sites without price modification according to this or that platform. For example, it is impossible to sell a book at € 2.99 on the Kindle platform when it is a price of € 6.99 on the Fnac sales site. If the price remains the same on all points of sale, the publisher or the author is completely free to modify it, either down or upwards according to its choice, on all platforms without exception.

Offer your ebook in free version

You can also create your e-book and offer it free of charge without going through sales platforms or digital libraries. This practice is common as part of Professional marketing strategy in order to recover as many email addresses as possible To increase its customer database. This opt-in lever then requires a destination page dedicated to the capture of the prospect email address. Then, this technique will ask to send a confirmation email containing the link to the ebook to its new reader. This very simple scenario to set up can be done on automation software like Mailchimp in particular.

Set a higher price according to the exclusive content of the e-book

Many cases where prices exceed € 10 exist in terms of e-book: this is especially motivated by the quality of the work, the length of the e-book but also by the notoriety of the author. What is an exclusive e-book ? When you turn to the recipe books of the big names in the kitchen for example, you can see that the e-book version can easily reach 20 € or 30 €. In these specific cases, this is explained by the name of the authors recognized in the profession, but also by the exclusivity of the revenues which do not exist outside the e-book. Likewise, some e-books written by influencers (fitness, well-being, etc.) can also exceed the 30 € mark: These personalities appreciated by the public deliver their exclusive advice, only accessible through the digital book, which makes content more “precious”. Finally, a higher price can also be justified by the size of the e-book (excluding literary work): If your work is highly documented, that the number of pages is substantial And that you estimate that your production deserves a higher rate, you can test your product for sale at a first price before adjusting it according to your results.

Sell your e-book on online libraries

How much is an ebook on Amazon Kindle ?

Two solutions to sell your e-book propose on the Amazon platform: 70 % fee and 35 % fee. As part of the 70 % fee, Your digital book must be in a price range between € 2.99 and € 9.99. You should also know that the 70 % formula induces delivery costs, calculated according to the weight of your Kindle file (0.12 € per MO). If you choose the 35 % royalty, No delivery costs is charged. In all scenarios, 5.5 % French VAT is taken from the fees. The price on the Amazon platform is also determined by the weight of the ebook, the number of pages of your digital book. A book between 3 and 10 MB should present a minimum catalog price of € 1.99. Beyond 10 MB, the catalog price displayed will be at least € 2.99. In addition to these prices, adding your ebook to the Amazon Kindle platform allows you to participate in different prices organized by Amazon to try to win awards, evolve as an author in order to gain notoriety and recognition.

What are the commissions practiced by the Kobo service ?

  • Up to 1.99 euros, the royalty is 45 %
  • Between 2 euros and 10 euros, the royalty is 70 %.

The Kobo platform is therefore more profitable than that of Amazon on smaller books, which pushes authors in self-publishing to diversify the channels on which their work is purchasing.

How to offer your book on tea vivlio readers ?

Tea Vivlio readers are linked to the Vivlio service, “the French digital book”. To be able to offer his digital book on the Vivlio service, It will be necessary to be published in a upstream publishing house.

Indeed, this platform makes it possible to promote the French bookstore and therefore French books, whether in digital format or in audio books.

The aim of this service is to support independent booksellers and work to maintain a more responsible ecosystem around the sale of digital books. Nevertheless, the service does not directly offer to publish its digital book in self-publishing but offers e-books published in French publishing houses.

It is however possible to Transfer ebooks directly to its tea reader purchased on a computer in formats adapted to the device.

10 things to know before buying a Kindle on Amazon

I was asked a few questions about Kindle following my other article and I realized that I knew a lot about Kindle.

I’ve been reading ebooks for almost 5 years. I had to buy 3-4 pounds in paper just for the pleasure of leafing through them but having to part with it when I bought them, pushes me more to buy ebooks, so I can keep them and read them down as much once I want, wherever I am.

This article talks about The Kindle reader but also the Amazon Kindle service in general.

1. You can use Kindle without buying the Kindle reader

There is Kindle and Kindle.

  • Kindle is an Amazon service where we can read ebooks (paid or free) (Download the Kindle apps here)
  • The Kindle reader, sold by Amazon, is a reader (a material) on which we can read ebooks (Amazon link of my reader)

For example, when you are interested in a book on Amazon, they offer the paper version or the Kindle version. In general, the Kindle version (ebook) is cheaper even if the content is exactly the same, but they do not lose money to print it and deliver it to you.

If you buy the Kindle version of the book, you can:

  • Read on Kindle applications (available on iOS, Android, Mac and PC). You just have to install it on your device and enter your Amazon identifiers to access it.
  • Read on your Kindle reader

Kindle reader, on the other hand, is a machine that can connect to WiFi. The latest versions are tactile. It is larger than a smartphone but smaller than a tablet. It is more pleasant for the eyes than a smartphone type screen because they use electronic ink to simulate a paper book. You can choose to shed light or not to read better in the darkness. (More info on my other article)

So you can see that without the Kindle reader, you can still read the ebooks bought on Amazon via an app.

2. You can read books on Kindle without subscribing

Amazon offers a Kindle subscription offer at € 10 per month, to access without limit to their base of a million titles. But they are often old books. I advise against to take this subscription. In addition, many of these books are also accessible for free with a prime subscription (see. point 3) so make a list of books that interest you and look at that they are included in the Kindle subscription before opting for this option.

It is better to buy your books one by one.

3. There are lots of free ebooks on Amazon

You can access free books in two ways:

  1. Either you have access to old works (Maupassant type), which have entered the public domain, and you can see the list here
  2. Either you have access to your Prime subscription. Basically, you can “borrow” them for free until your premium subscription does not expire. You can access the list here. This list is more interesting because there are rather recent and high quality books (e., the entire Harry Potter collection is available). To find them on the apps or on the reader, it’s still a little difficult because it looks like Amazon hides them, so use a computer rather.

4.We can import our own ebooks

Whether with the Kindle app or the Kindle reader, we can import Our own ebooks (not purchased via Amazon) without any restriction. For what ?

  • To have all ebooks in the same and only place, It’s still cooler
  • The Kindle application is super well done and provides Many more features that a simple PDF read on Acrobat Reader cannot bring
  • If you have a Kindle reader, read on the reader is more pleasant And hurts your eyes less than a smartphone or computer screen

How to import ebooks on the *Kindle reader * ?

It’s very simple, you just have to connect the reader with a USB cable to the computer and copy/paste the file in the folder where there are lots of books. In my case, it is in the file D: \ Documents \ Downloads \ items01

But you can see that some PDFs do not read well on the Kindle reader because the layout is not suitable (police too small for example). In this case, you can convert the PDF to format .AMZ (Kindle format) to better take advantage of Kindle features (highlighting a passage, bookmark, increasing/decreasing the police).

To convert PDF to AMZ, I use the software Pdfmate ebook Converter, free.

I let you compare the quality of an original PDF file (absolutely illegible) and its Kindle format .Amz.

  • If you don’t have a computer, The simplest method to convert these little readable formats into Kindle format is to send Ebooks on the Kindle library.

How to import ebooks on the *Kindle library * ?

As explained, we can import our own ebooks locally (that is that ebooks will only be available on the computer’s Kindle app, or that Kindle reader). But what I like is to have all the synchronized and available books everywhere. And for that, it is necessary that All books are in my Kindle library. Let me explain: if the books are in my “Kindle library” and associated with my Amazon identifiers, I can Read a book on the smartphone and take the same book on the same page on my tablet or on my Kindle reader.

I hope my explanation is clear.

To upload your own ebook (which you bought elsewhere or that someone spun you), it’s very simple.

    • From any device: you can Send your books by email to an address @Kindle.com Created specifically for you. Your authorized email address allows you to send the following types of files: Kindle format (.Mobi, .Azw), Bmicrosoft Word (.Doc, .Docx), html (.Html, .Htm), RTF (.RTF), text (.Txt), jpeg (.Jpeg, .JPG), GIF (.Gif), png (.PNG), BMP (.BMP), PDF (.PDF). For Convert your document to Kindle format, Enter “Convert” into the object line. Learn more about Kindle emails here
    • From the computer:
      • you can use The “Send to Kindle” extension on Google Chrome To transform any article or siteweb into “Kindle book” and will be available on your Kindle library
      • you can use The Send to Kindle application To send any Microsoft Word file (.Doc, .Docx), pdf (.Pdf), text (.Txt), images (.Jpg, .Jpeg, .Png, .BMP), Kindle format (.Azw, .Mobi), other file types (.RTF, .Pc, .PSZ) on your Kindle library

      • From the smartphone:
        • Download the Kindle app. As soon as you read an interesting article or post, click on “Share” then select the Kindle app. The article in question will be converted to “Kindle book” and will be available on your Kindle library.
        • Likewise, by opening a PDF or DOC file on the smartphone, you can also click on the “Share” button then choose the Kindle app. The document in question will be converted to “Kindle book” and will be available on your Kindle library

For example, there are several “practical guides” articles on our world Tour du Monde 5 continents site. You can transform these practical guides (from your browser) into Kindle format to reread it in offline later, just in 4 clicks.

Tadam ! The article is available in offline On my Kindle & my Kindle app. This is particularly useful, especially for the Cuba where we do not have 3G

        5. You can import ebooks Kobo and Google Play on Kindle

Yes, it is quite possible. If for any reason you can’t find your book on Kindle (it’s quite surprising but why not) or the book in question is cheaper On Kobo or Google Play, you can export these books.

The export formats offered will be PDF or EPUB protected by DRM.

If it’s in PDF, we saw above how to export them to Kindle format.

If he is a EPUB protected by DRM, you will have to use Adobe Digital Editions (free) to export the file to EPUB or PDF format. Then use Pdfmate ebook Converter (free) to convert ePub or PDF into Kindle format. It’s doable, it’s a bit long explained like that but I swear it works and it’s easier than it looks

        6. The Kindle reader exists in version with and without advertising

You have surely watched the Kindle reader product sheet without knowing what to choose. The advertising version costs 10 € more than without advertising.

I bought the version with White advertising (Amazon link) (the advertising version is not available for two months). In reality, advertising is not embarrassing because we only see it when the Kindle is in standby.

But if it bothers you that much, we can easily Disable advertising later by going to his account and By paying an additional € 10. For that :

        1. Access your content and devices.
        2. Select Devices.
        3. Select the button Actions to the left of the device name.
        4. Access Special offers, Then select To modify.
        5. Follow the instructions to unsubscribe from special offers. The amount of unique costs is displayed before you confirm your wish to unsubscribe.

        7. You can read an extract from the book for free

Let’s go back to our example Pride and Prejudice.

On the book product sheet on Amazon, we see that there is a “leaf” button

You can click on it and read a few first pages on your browser.

But if you use the Kindle application, or the Kindle reader to look for books, you will see a button to receive the extract. And it’s more pleasant to read anyway.

This is what I do with travel guides. The extract often stops right after the 7 -day / 14 days routes (aka the part that interests me). And since I really don’t need precise explanations, and rather interests “top 10 places not to be missed in such a country”, I buy very few guides finally.

If at the end of the extract, You want to buy the ebook, you can do it From the Android app, from the Kindle reader, but Not via the iOS app or computer apps Because it is a question of integrated purchasing costs for Apple or Windows

        8. You can return a book up to 14 days after purchase

Sometimes the extract is top but after buying the whole book, we realize that the rest is not up to. So how to do when you have already paid Amazon to buy the whole book ?

Don’t worry, Amazon is an American company and in English -speaking countries, consumers like to be able to exchange and be reimbursed. Conditions are less strict than in Europe. So even if you bought the ebook and read a game, you can still Return it to 14 days after purchase.

        1. Access your content and devices.
        2. In your content, select the button Action Located next to the title you want to return, then Refund.
        3. In the contextual window, choose the return pattern (any one), then select Refund.

In general, they reimburse within 10 minutes.

        9. You can lend your ebooks

Even if the ebooks are virtual, they can be lent.

The loan functionality of Kindle books allows users to lend, their family and their friends, the digital books they bought in the Kindle store. Each book can be loaned Only once, for a period of 14 days. During this period, the ebook is inaccessible to the original buyer. In addition, the loan functionality is only available for Kindle books bought on Amazon

Some publishers like Lonely Planet do not accept books.

The one who takes the book must accept the loan, otherwise your book will automatically come back to you within 7 days.

Like JB and I live under the same roof, we put a single Kindle account on all our devices like that we have both access to our Kindle library. If JB and I read the same book at the same time, I deactivate the synchronization of pages & notes on all the devices, as JB will not be disturbed by my notes and underlines.

        10. You can update your book for free

If a book you bought has a new edition (often to correct bugs, layouts or spelling mistakes), Kindle will offer you the new version for free, without losing what you have added as notes or underlints. To do this, go to Amazon and locate books where it is marked “update” or “update”.

If you are on the Kindle application or the reader, Kindle will ask you to delete the book of your device and the retaler. Please note, choose delete the device And NOT from the library.

Here, I hope this article was useful to you. There are still lots of hidden features (audible, bluetooth …), so do not hesitate to leave a comment if necessary.

I really like Amazon ebooks services. I like to read the books in their original language and I like to have access to a international inventory. Read ebooks allows me to read a lot without lugging myself with 10,000 pounds in paper at the end of the world. If you want to know more about Kindle, read my detailed opinion here
