The Small SUV DS 3 E-Tense undergoes a slight restyling and inaugurates a new more powerful powertrain, led to equip other models from the Stellantis group. It remains to be seen whether the promise of rising autonomy is indeed there.

Presentation

We no longer present DS Automobiles, one of the manufacturers of the Stellantis group whose trademark is French luxury. Among the brand’s models, the DS 3, a small SUV available in thermal and electric versions that appeared in 2019.

After four years of existence, DS estimated that a slight restyling was essential, but not only. Indeed, the Frenchman takes the opportunity to inaugurate a new more powerful motorcycle group, theoretically offering more autonomy. Abandoning the continental equipment supplier, the new engine-made in France in the PSA factory in Trémery-Metz-is signed Emotors, a co-company of PSA and Nidec.

This engine now offers a power of 115 kW (156 hp) against 100 kW (136 hp) before. The battery (340 kg) sees its useful capacity increase to 51 kWh (54 kWh raw). Supplied by Chinese Catl, it is based on a new chemistry (NMC II) composed of 80 % nickel, 10 % manganese and 10 % cobalt. The pack is made up of 17 modules (+10 %) and 102 cells. The announced autonomy varies from 395 to 404 km (WLTP cycle), depending on the tire rising.

Our test version, the DS3 E-Tense Rivoli, starts at € 44,800 excluding ecological bonuses and is equipped with hand-free access and start-up, a grained black basalt leather interior, homemade infotainment Iris System with Connected 3D Navigation, 18 “Nice Alloy rims and the comfort pack. Note that the entry -level, the Bastille finish, starts at € 41,700 excluding bonuses while the high -end, Opera, is displayed at € 48,800 and no longer benefits from € 5,000 in ecological bonuses.

Ergonomics and design

It will take a sharp eye to locate the new stylistic details of the SUV, which in passing loses its “crossback” suffix. The grille has been redesigned with more pronounced angle games which also recall the new DS4 and it hosts new LED headlights – in three distinct parts – with sharp design. As for new daytime fires (LEDs), they appear vertically on both sides of the grille and come to strengthen aerodynamics, with a SCX up 7 %.

The rear is more sober, with the presence of a black lacquered rush (more discreet than chrome) connecting the two headlights and supporting the DS automobile monogram. Among the new features, there are two new colors, Diva red and lacquered gray, and new 17 and 18 inch rims. By opting for the latter, the DS 3 e-Tense was lowered by 10 mm in order to gain autonomy. Better still, the Toulouse rims in 18 inches (195/55R18) – exclusively symmetrical – roads of tall & narrow class A+ tires contribute to preserving the battery life.

Once in the passenger compartment, we find the classy side that characterizes the brand, with an original presentation and a manufacturing quality suffering no reproach, except perhaps the presence of hard plastics in the lower parts. Another downside, the front seats that seemed to us to be narrow, with a reduced seat in the thighs. A test with the famous seats Confection Bracelet Nappa Leather Watch Black Basalt on the Opera finish made it possible that the problem came well from the garnishing of our seats Gray Mixed Galet Nappa / Fabric.

Passengers on the back will have to deal with a just decent leg space. Once again, the middle passenger will not be better off. He can always console himself with the softness of the folding seat. Note that these passenger are not entitled to ventilation (absence of nozzles) or USB ports.

The driver benefits from a new steering wheel on which are grouped, on both sides of the branches, the commands linked to the 7 -inch instrument handset, infotainment and driving aids.

Ergonomics will require an adaptation time, with scattered orders, such as the driving mode selector placed on the passenger side, at the speed lever, or the adjustment of the high head system positioned behind the steering wheel, forcing to contort to get there.

Fortunately, driving aids (regulator and speed limiter) are fully accessible from the steering wheel. However, we would have appreciated that the touch controls located under the 10.3 -inch screen are more reactive and embellished with a more frank touch when you press one of them.

Finally, the trunk volume of the new DS 3 e-Tense remains unchanged, at 350 l listed seats and 1050 l folded bench seat. In the event of a trip to several, the flexible bags will be required.

Comfort and equipment

Our DS 3 e-Tense in Rivoli finish benefits from a rich endowment of equipment, in particular with a new central screen of 10.3 inch (diagonal of 26.2 cm) whose brilliant appearance contrasts strongly with the old matt screens.

One of the first observations is the total occupation of the screen surface at the display level. This is appreciable, especially when you switch to Carplay or Android Auto, all in wireless mode. Reactive and fluid, this screen is customizable via shortcut keys or widgets. Like a smartphone, you can display several screen pages that you just have to sweep with the finger.

The driving station is highlighted by a 7 -inch digital instrumentation handset (diagonal of 17.78 cm) on which there are various information related to driving, energy consumption and driving aids. A downside nevertheless concerning the too many information displayed and a slightly small typography.

The handset is coupled with a head-up system (HUD or Head-up Display in English), materialized by a 17 x 7 cm retractable plexiglass blade of 17 x 7 cm. The information is projected at a virtual distance of 2 m, giving the impression of having an image of 24 x 7 cm. Although clear and bright, the latter is a bit cheap in a car symbolizing French luxury. The latter’s adjustment is carried out from a dedicated order nestled behind the steering wheel or by diving into the Iris System Maison System infotainment.

The vocal assistant Hey Iris, signed by Californian Soundhound, is functional and allows you to give simple orders without being forced to let go of the steering wheel. Heating adjustment is a good example, but it interrupts music.

With a narrow and very tilted rear telescope, some maneuvers can be a problem. However, this aspect is compensated by a new high definition camera which offers good 360 ° and rear vision.

We note the presence of induction recharge and two USB-A ports, one in the central console, the second in the front part of the central armrest.
