Disney+ imitates Netflix and deeply changes its subscription: discover what will change next November 1
On the occasion of the presentation of its quarterly results, Disney announced a major overhaul of the prices of its video service service on Disney demand+. We explain the new offer and the next price grid that will be applied in a few weeks.

A little over 3 years after its launch in France, the Disney streaming platform will update its Disney subscription+. This announcement is far from surprise since the new Disney pricing strategy had already been deployed in the United States last December. The launch in Europe was just a matter of time.
The single subscription will disappear in favor of a segmented range
Unlike Netflix, its eternal rival, Disney+ currently offers only one subscription billed at € 8.99/month (or € 89.99 over one year). A simple offer, without commitment and ultra complete with in particular the possibility of watching the videos simultaneously on 4 different screens, to benefit from downloads (out -of -connection) and to enjoy the best quality (4K UHD image and its Dolby Atmos).
On November 1, the unique offer will be replaced by a range of 3 subscriptions called “Standard with pub”, “Standard” and “Premium”. Each offer will have a different price and features. Disney+ ‘objective being to expand its audience by now offering a more affordable package but associated with advertising cuts. By making “co-finance” its offer by advertisers, Disney+ is inspired by the model set up by Netflix. Model that seems to work because consumers reduce their expenses during inflation period, on the one hand, and seek to optimize their SVOD budget by multiplying subscriptions to the various platforms (which have exclusive content) without exploding their bill.
A new offer with advertising at only € 5.99
Like Netflix, Disney+ will therefore launch a much cheaper formula but in which advertising will be broadcast. A widespread economic model in streaming services like Spotify for music or at YouTube for videos. As on a traditional and linear television channel, “standard” subscribers will therefore have to watch advertisements. We have no details currently on the possibility of receiving personalized advertisements or if the advertising spots will be broadcast during the videos.
The Disney+ subscription with advertising will therefore be cheaper but also less complete as shown in this comparison table detailing services by offer from November 1, 2023 (source: Chloé Woitier):

A standard offer at the same price but less complete
How to differentiate standard and premium packages and justify the new high -end positioning of this new subscription ? Failing to add exclusive content for example, Disney has simply decided to degrade its intermediate subscription. Although the price remains the same, the standard offer of November 1 will be amputated by several features: the number of screens included will go from 4 to 2 and the audiovisual quality of the videos will be bridled in Full HD stereo. 4K and Dolby will be reserved for premium subscribers.
This change of range will not be without consequence for the Disney current subscribers park+. This winter, they will automatically migrate to the premium subscription (corresponding to the level of service of their current offer). Internet users will then have 3 choices:
- Accept the price increase of € 3 per month linked to migration to the premium offer
- Connect to their account and change the formula (therefore losing in terms of value for money)
- terminate their Disney+ subscription (the offer is without obligation)
The video on demand market is changing. After a launch phase and then conquest, platforms must adapt their economic model, and find a fragile balance between profitability and growth of their subscriber base. The productions of exclusive films and series are increasingly expensive and Internet users no longer hesitate to unsubscribe from one platform to focus on another, even if it means reinforcing a few months later. And to this little game there, it is Netflix who has the public favors, far ahead of Amazon Video and Disney+ according to the SubMix23 study of the Bearing Point study cabinet.
