5G. It’s what ?

5G is the 5th generation of mobile telephony networks.
In France, the consumption of mobile data has multiplied by 5 in the past five years. 5G will thus provide better flow rates to support the rise in digital uses on a daily basis (quick download of your films/series, Fluid Visio, video quality in UHD, etc.), but also to allow the boom of new Uses (connected objects, autonomous cars, connected health, etc.).

The largest 5G network in France
in number of sites*

With more than 16,589 5G sites put into service*, Free today offers the largest 5G mobile network in France.
Thanks to investments made in its network and the acquisition of frequencies, Free offers its subscribers:

  • Large coverage and a good signal inside buildings thanks to so -called low frequencies (700 MHz) which have very good propagation properties
  • Ultra -Rapid flows thanks to the 70 MHz in the high frequency band (3.5GHz) which make it possible to considerably increase the flows, up to three faster than 4G.

Accessible in more than 9,788 municipalities, the 5G network of Free already covers more than 90% of the population in France.

At Free, they are more than 2,000 people working on a daily basis To bring you the best possible connection quality.

What is 5G ?

5G is the fifth generation of cellular technology. It is designed to increase speed, reduce latency and improve the flexibility of wireless services. 5G technology has a theoretical top speed of 20 Gbit/s, while the top speed of 4G is only 1 Gbit/s. The 5G also promises a lower latency, which can improve the performance of professional applications as well as other digital experiences (such as online games, videoconference and driver -free cars).

What is 5G technology?

While previous generations of cellular technology (such as 4G LTE) focused on connectivity, 5G places the bar even higher by offering customers connected experiences from the cloud. 5G networks are virtualized and managed by software, and they operate infonual technologies. The 5G network will also simplify mobility, thanks to open and transparent roaming capacities between cell access and Wi-Fi access. Mobile users can remain connected to the Internet when they go from an external wireless connection to an interior wireless network, without any intervention on their part or any need to renew its authentication. The new Wi-Fi 6 wireless technology standard (also known as 802.11AX) Sharing characteristics with 5G, especially in terms of improved performance. Wi-Fi 6 frequencies can be placed where users need it to provide better geographic coverage at low cost. Underlying these Wi-Fi 6 frequencies is a software network with advanced automation. 5G technology should improve connectivity in poorly served rural areas and in cities where demand can sometimes exceed the current capacity offered by 4G technology. The new 5G networks will also have a dense architecture with distributed access and will bring the processing of border and user data closer to provide faster data processing.

How 5G technology works?

5G technology will introduce advances in network architecture. The new 5G frequency, the global standard for a more efficient 5G wireless radio interface, will cover non -covered 4G spheres. The new antennas will integrate a technology known as Mimo Massif (multiple input, multiple output, or multiple entries, multiple outputs, in French), which allows several transmitters and receivers to transfer a greater number of data simultaneously. But 5G technology is not limited to the new radio spectrum. It is designed to take charge of a heterogeneous and convergent network, combining wireless technologies under license and without license. This function will add bandwidth available for users. 5G architectures will represent platforms defined by software, in which the networking functionality is managed by software rather than by hardware. The progress of virtualization, infonuagic technologies and computer automation and business processes allow 5G architecture to be agile and flexible, while providing user access to any time and all places. 5G networks can create constructions of subnets defined by software, also known as the network cutting of the network. These tranches allow network administrators to manage network functionalities according to users and devices. 5G also improves digital experiences thanks to automation -based automation (ML). Asking for a response time in a few fractions of a second (as for drivers without drivers) requires 5G networks, because they allow automation to obtain automatic learning and, possibly, thanks to depth learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Automated supply and proactive traffic and services administration will reduce infrastructure costs and improve the experience of the connected world.

When 5G is available and how will it develop?

The 5G service is already available in certain regions of various countries. These first generation 5G services are called 5G non -autonomous (5G NSA). This technology is a 5G radio which is based on the existing 4G LTE network infrastructure. 5G NSA will be faster than 4G LTE. But high speed and low latency 5G technology on which the industry emphasizes is autonomous 5G (5G SA). It should start to be available by 2020 and be generally available by 2022.

What is the real impact of 5G technology?

5G technology will not only open the doors of an improved new performance and network speed, but will also offer new connected experiences for users. In terms of health care, 5G technology and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity will monitor patients via connected devices that constantly provide data on the main health indicators, such as heart rate and blood pressure. In the automotive industry, 5G combined with automatic learning algorithms will provide information on traffic and accidents, for example. Vehicles will be able to share information with other vehicles and entities on the roads, such as traffic lights. We only mention two industrial applications for which 5G technology could offer better and safer experiences to users.

What is Cisco’s contribution to 5G technology?

Cisco provides this automated, internet-client network, defined by software for 5G. Cisco One architecture is an architecture defined by software, based in the cloud, which covers the deployments of companies and service providers in a transparent manner. This includes the roaming open between the cellular network and Wi-Fi, including the new Wi-Fi 6 (also known as 802.11AX), which shares several attributes with 5G architecture.

In total, today, 56,656 5G branches are active in France spread over 30,710 sites.

With 23,550 antennas, the band 3.5 GHz is the one with the most antennas. Conversely, frequency band 2.1 GHz, with 16,359 branches, is the one that has the least 5G antennas.

From the 5G antennas card above, find the details of the antennas by operator (Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free) and by frequency. For example, you can know everything about 5G orange antennas or 5G free antennas.

The number of 5G antennas per operator and per frequency

5G deployment continues in France. Find above the detail of the number of 5G relay antennas currently active by operator. Orange 5G, Free, Bouygues, SFR 5G antennas, all operators are represented. And discover the number of antennas per frequency (700 MHz, 2.1 GHz or 3.5 GHz).

5G network coverage by department

Day after day, a 5G antenna or more are made active in France.

From the 5G card in France above, find for each department the total number of active 5G antennas. Some French departments have a large number of 5G antennas while others are poorly covered in 5G.

Is your department well covered in 5g ? You may be one of the lucky ones who have access to this technology and can enjoy an excellent speed thanks to 5G speed.

What is 5g ?

No more flow

With 5G, you benefit from flows ten times faster than in 4G, similar to those of fiber. Video, gaming or virtual reality, the connection is in ultra high speed with 5G

More reactivity

Compared to 4G, 5G offers latency time divided by two. Latence corresponds to the response time. The average 4G ping is 40 ms against 20 ms in 5g. Interactive uses become completely fluid in 5g.

More connectivity

5G makes it possible to multiply by ten the number of objects connected simultaneously to the network, including in very frequented places where the connection is very stressed.

Fifth generation of mobile network, 5G will ultimately replace 4G, while offering a series of additional advantages. Thanks to 5G, it is the world of interactivity and connected objects that opens up to all. All those who have subscribed to a 5G package and who have a phone 5G in France can benefit today from the best that this new mobile network offers.

5G frequencies and their flow

5G in France was deployed on several frequency bands: those used by 3G and 4G (700 MHz and 2.1 GHz); and two new bands that were not yet attributed (3.5 GHz and 26 GHz).
