This is sad news for consumers in these times of inflation: the price of subscriptions in Deezer increases today in France, announces the musical streaming platform. This is the second time in less than two years that it has happened.

This decision will hit its customers and future customers head on. It also marks a turning point for the whole music industry, and it could encourage its Spotify and Apple Music rivals to do the same, after increased increases this year.

The detail of Deezer’s new prices

Concretely, the Deezer Premium monthly subscription is now € 11.99 against € 10.99 before. As for the annual offer, it goes from € 98.90 to € 107.99. Same trend for the family subscription that allows six people to use Deezer. It is now marketed at € 19.99/month against € 17.99/month previously (€ 218.99 against € 196.99 over a year). Finally, and this is good news, the student offer remains at the same price: € 5.99 per month.

In a statement released for the occasion, the French streaming service is justified:

Since its creation over 15 years ago, Deezer has always committed to better value the music created by artists. In continuation of this commitment, and in order to continue its investment in innovation intended to fully support artists and to improve the experience of fans, Deezer has decided to adjust its prices.

If this ad probably does not please customers, it should however fully satisfy the big record companies. Last February, Robert Kyncl, Managing Director of Warner Music, estimated that the music prize was undervalued by these actors.

He thus underlined during an exchange with investors: “Since 2011, the Subscription Prize for the standard Netflix service has almost doubled . . . On the other hand, the price of a musical subscription has remained the same since the introduction of streaming more than ten years ago “.

Like video streaming players, large streaming platforms are therefore engaged in a policy of increasing prices aimed at finding the path of profitability. We do not forget for example that Spotify accumulates subscribers and users without managing to make profits.
