Airpods: how to use them with an Android smartphone

The American firm Apple did not want to restrict its wireless headphones to the users of the brand’s devices. It allowed the other brands to take advantage of the features of the AirPods. Use AirPods with your Mac

If you use AirPods (2nd generation), make sure your Mac has Mojave 10 macOS.14.4 or a later version. Airpods pro (1st generation) require MacOS Catalina 10.15.1 or a later version. Airpods (3rd generation) require MacOS Monterey or a later version. Airpods Pro (2nd generation) require the latest version of MacOS. If you have configured your airpods with your iPhone and your Mac is connected to iCloud with the same Apple identifier, your airpods may be ready to be used with your Mac. Place your airpods in your ears and click either the Bluetooth menu , either on the volume control of the menu bar of your Mac. 1 . Then choose your airpods from the list.

If your airpods do not appear in the Bluetooth menu or volume control 2, twin your airpods with your Mac:

1. On your mac, choose system settings from the Apple menu , then click the Bluetooth button.
2. Check that bluetooth is activated.
3. Place the two airpods in the load case and open the cover.
4. Keep the configuration button located at the back of the housing pressed until the status light flashes white.
5. Select your airpods from the devices list, then click Connect.

If the sound always goes through your Mac speakers, click either the Bluetooth menu , either on the volume control of the menu bar, and make sure that your airpods are selected as an output device 1 .

Use airpods with a brand of a brand other than Apple

You can use your airpods as a Bluetooth helmet with a device that is not Apple brand. You can’t use Siri, but you can listen and talk. To configure your airpods with an Android phone or a brand device other than Apple 3, proceed as follows:

1. On your non-Apple device, go to the settings for Bluetooth and check that bluetooth is activated 4 . If you have an Android device, access Settings> Connections> Bluetooth.
2. Place your airpods in the load case and open the cover.
3. Keep the configuration button located at the back of the housing pressed until the status light flashes white.
4. When your airpods appear in the list of Bluetooth devices, select them.

Automatically switch between devices

The sound of your airpods (2nd and 3rd generation) and your AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) can automatically switch between a Mac with Big Macos on, an iPhone with iOS 14 and an iPad with iPados 14 or of a later version. Your devices must be connected with the same Apple identifier via two factors identification. So when you listen to music on your Mac, you can, for example, answer a call on your iPhone. The sound of your airpods then automatically rocks between the Mac on which you listen to music and the iPhone on which the telephone call is received.

In some situations, a notification relating to airPods is displayed on your mac screen. If you keep your mouse pointer on it, a connect button appears. Click Connect to indicate that you want the sound of your airpods to swing, or remains, on your mac.

If you want to deactivate the automatic tilting functionality for your Mac, access Bluetooth preferences on it when your airpods are in your ears. Click on the Options button with regard to your AirPods in the list of devices. Click Connect to this Mac, then select the option if it is the latest device used. To reactivate this feature, select automatically.

In principle, the sound should not automatically switch from one device to another during a conversation, for example during a telephone call, a facetime call or a videoconferencing.

The different models of AirPods available
