The iPhone 13 compared to the iPhone 12, which buy ?

This Tuesday, September 14, Apple unveiled the iPhone 13. Unlike last year, the new generation of iPhone has relatively modest changes compared to the previous generation, which has been kept in the reduced price catalog. The question therefore arises: should we take advantage of the latest news, or rather save money by opting for a model from last year ? Here are the differences between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13 and our tips to see more clearly.

Design and screen

The developments in terms of design are quite minimal this year, but we can still distinguish the iPhone 13 from the iPhone 12, from the front and back. At the rear, the two cameras are larger and are now positioned diagonally. At the front, the notch that welcomes the different sensors making possible the Face ID facial recognition sees its reduced size of 20% (it is however very slightly higher) thanks to the move of the speaker above the sensors, directly against the chassis.

For the rest, the design is significantly identical: we find the flat edges inaugurated by the iPhone 12, an aluminum chassis (with different choices of colors), the same water resistance, the glass back compatible with the Magsafe magnetic recharge, the Lightning connector at the bottom of the phone and the two 5.4 “screen sizes for the Mini and 6.1” model for the classic model. The height and width of the two generations of iPhone are exactly the same, but the new models are thicker (7.65 mm against 7.4 mm) and heavier (140 g against 133 g for the iPhone 13 Mini, and 173 g against 162 g for the classic iPhone 13).

The iPhone 13 inaugurates the Apple A15 Bionic chip, which succeeds the Apple A14 Bionic chip of the iPhone 12. The first tests of this new processor reports progress in performance located between 10% and 20% for gross power, and around 16% for graphics. Suffice to say that in everyday life, it will not revolutionize much: the Apple A14 chip was already a monster of power.

Apple has brought optimizations, for example on the side of the neural Engine and the image processor for the processing of photos and videos in real time, which allows some interesting new features for features related to cameras. But from the consumer’s point of view, you must see more the Apple A15 chip as a guarantee of sustainability than anything else: in real life, the iPhone 13 will not be more reactive than the iPhone 12. In terms of RAM, no change: the classic iPhone 13 remains at 4 GB (6 GB on pro models).

To accompany this Apple A15 chip, a new 5G modem supports two additional strips for optimum flow rates and compatibility. Not enough to jump to the ceiling: nobody complained about the performance of the 5G of the iPhone 12. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 inaugurates a new possibility which will appeal to certain users: the management of the double ESIM for two packages without a physical sim card (the iPhone 12 also supports two packages, but with a single ESIM and a compulsory physical sim card).

This new modem is less consumer, and it is based on more capacitarian batteries. The iPhone 13 Mini has a battery of 9.57 Wh instead of 8.57 Wh on the iPhone 12 Mini (+9%), and the iPhone 13 is equipped with a 12.41 WH battery Instead of 10.78 Whs on the iPhone 12 (+15%). Cameras

Like every year, Apple has seen the cameras present at the back of the iPhone. The iPhone 13 is still equipped with two sensors: a large angle and an ultra-angle, but the two modules have changed. They are bigger to capture more light and offer better low light results with better lit images, more details and less digital noise. The new large angle can receive up to 47% more light, and it adopts a new optical stabilization system called Sensor-Shift (which stabilizes the sensor itself and not optics), more effective for photos sharper. It is also this new stabilization system, larger, which justifies the new positioning diagonally of the sensors. Note that the cameras are strictly identical on the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Mini.

Thanks to these new sensors and the Apple A15 chip, Apple has set up some software news for the iPhone 13. There is Smart HDR 4 mode to improve the quality of HDR photos. There are photographic styles to boost or intelligently reduce the colors of the images, recognizing the subjects so as not to alter their skin color. Finally there is the kinematic mode to automatically change (or manually) and gently the depth of field and the development when taking videos, with the possibility of modifying the focus or adjusting the vagueness to post-production.

Sensor-Shift stabilization

The developments made to cameras are undoubtedly the most important changes to the iPhone 13 – they are in any case those that will have the most daily impact. The iPhone 12 sensors obviously remain excellent bill (see our test) but users sensitive to the quality of the photos, especially indoors or at night, will appreciate improvements to the iPhone 13.

Capacities and prices

The iPhone 13 has not replaced the iPhone 12: old models are always marketed by Apple at a reduced rate. At the same time, Apple has doubled the quantities of storage offered with the new models: where generation 12 is offered with 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB, generation 13 is available with 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB. It is therefore necessary to be careful to take storage into account when comparing the prices.

The iPhone 12 Mini is now available from € 689, € 120 less than the iPhone 13 Mini which is sold from € 809. If you don’t need more than 64 GB of storage, it is a notable savings. If you have more important needs, for example to store more photos and videos, the iPhone 12 Mini from 128 GB at € 739 represents only € 70 saved compared to the iPhone 13 Mini of equivalent equivalent capacity. This reasoning is even more relevant for the iPhone 12, from € 809 for € 64 GB instead of € 909 for 128 GB for the iPhone 13, or 100 € apart. For 128 GB, the iPhone 12 goes to € 859 and there is only 50 € difference with the iPhone 13 of the same capacity.

The iPhone 13 presents interesting developments but the iPhone 12 does not deserve, far from it. However, equivalent capacity rate differences have something to think ! Storage needs and budget imperatives differ from person to person, of course, but the low price differences between the two ranges can tip the balance in favor of the iPhone 13, a little better equipped and which guarantees greater sustainability.

Obviously, this reasoning is only due for capacities above 64 GB, and it also holds only for a purchase on the Apple Store. Because among resellers, the price difference is likely to be more important. The discounts are indeed much rarer on recent products than on older references. Barely the iPhone 13 presented, there were already discounts of more than 10% on certain models of iPhone 12 in some resellers !
