Renault presents this Monday, October 10, 2022 the Mobilize Duo, a new electric quadricycle designed to succeed the Twizy. Available in several versions and with a range of 140 km, this vehicle is led to compete with the Citroën Friend in the field of cars without a license.
With the Citroën Friend, the chevrons brand struck hard on the car -free car market. Despite limited performance with a maximum speed of 45 km/h and 70 km of autonomy, the small electric city car quickly found takers, evidenced by the 20,000 sales exceeded in April 202222.
Nevertheless, the domination of the friend in this particular sector could well be undermined by a new competitor: The Renault Mobilize Duo. This Monday, October 10, 2022, in addition to the presentation of its own network of charging stations, the diamond brand lifted the veil on the one that must Replace the Twizy.

The movable duo, designed by the eponymous subsidiary of Renault dedicated to urban mobility, displays Ultra compact dimensions with 2.43 meters long and 1.30 meters wide. We find unsurprisingly the characteristic style of the Twizy, with its two places in tandem and this form of egg on wheels.

And under the hood ? For the moment, the manufacturer has not given the power or the torque. Nevertheless, we know that the movable duo will be launched in two versions:
- A model displaying a maximum speed. 45 km/h accessible without a license (from 14 years old)
- A model displaying a maximum speed. 80 km/h requiring license B
According to Renault, The two versions have a beautiful autonomy of 140 km, Which is much higher than what the Twizy (120 km) and the Citroën Ami of course and its 70 km. Be careful, We do not yet know the battery capacity or the precise charging time.
On this point, we nevertheless know that the movable duo will offer domestic recharge and via a type 2 cable suitable for public terminals. We suspect that Renault will reveal this missing information later, The movable duo is not expected before the end of 2023. Regarding the finance part, the vehicle will only be available in a flexible subscription, from 3 months for individuals. The operation will be done in a few clicks according to the manufacturer.

30 days and 500 km in Citroën Friend: the electric everyday and without a license, how is it ?
Like everyone, we discovered the Citroën Friend in 2020 during a fairly classic test. Informative, but insufficient to know whether or not this electric quadricycle without a license can really replace a car. The editorial staff of the AM therefore resumed the wheel of the chip every day, for a month !

Even if their services are modest, cars without a license are not given, quite the contrary. Currently, an Aixam Minauto Access is sold for € 9,799 while the Ligier and other Microcar start at € 10,599. So when Citroën offers a friend at € 7,990, there is every need to be interested in it. Especially since at this floor price, you still have to deduct € 900 in CO2 bonuses and do not forget that with its small electric motor, the friend is really not expensive to ride while its competitors fuel diesel. Nevertheless, to release an electric cart at this price, Citroën has damn crossed out on services. So, is this quadricycle really enough on a daily basis ? This is what we checked, for 1 month at the wheel.
The friend, a carton that tames
To spend most of our time in cars, we are necessarily shifted by settling in the friend, which remains a cart. Before we even take a seat, we unlock the doors with a key different from that of contact. It is in the amount of the right door that we then put the cable, solidarity of the car, vacuum cleaner. Except that there is not even a roller ! It is therefore necessary to pack in a compartment provided for this purpose.
With its antagonistic opening driver door, sitting is not so simple, because the driver’s “seat” is placed at the back of the very small cabin while the steering column is obviously fixed. You have to drop back a little before being sitting well on what we would gladly qualify as a stool. Citroën having still taken care to stick, above, a pad. Then remains to advance or back up this seat to find the best possible position, understood that you never feel really well installed.
Stripped as possible, the cabin is then quickly surrounded. You just have to take into account the 3 buttons that control the gearbox placed to the left of the seat, 2 other ventilation buttons and a USB socket to recharge the phone. Obviously, no multimedia screen, no radio or mirror adjustment. A steering wheel, a counter and a handbrake, the friend is a cure of Digital Detox ! We can however be there in two and in front of the passenger, a substantial space remains available to place bags and other personal effects. And a Bluetooth speaker finds room in the dashboard to set the mood.
Rolling every day as a friend is how ?
Like the interior, the first kilometers in a friend require a little adaptation. At first, it is above all the rustic aspect that strikes. With almost hard suspensions as the seats, a truck direction in the maneuvers, a noise in the unprecedented cabin for lack of soundproofing, the friend is not welcoming. It is therefore necessary to reformat your brain and forgive this chip the faults which hold its very design, that of an electric machine with four wheels at less than € 7,000.
In urban traffic, 8 hp and 40 nm of torque are enough, because the friend is also light. We take off the lights and stop at least as quickly as the cars around and the speed climb is done fairly quickly to the flange, located at 45 km/h. At least on the dish. Because downhill, you can possibly catch 48 or 49 km/h. Conversely, we have several times suffered power losses in the middle of small dimensions, the speed that can fall unexpectedly up to 15 km/h, as if the battery no longer delivered power.
Without concrete explanations, we can hypothesize poor tolerance to cold during this long-term test which took place between mid-November and mid-December. Still, in town, where stops/starts are frequent, we rarely bother. Including when it comes to making a niche, because with 2.41 m long and 1.39 m wide, the little chip from rafters returns everywhere ! On the other hand, the friend is authorized on departmental, where the maximum speed reaches 90 km/h. On these tracks, the Citroën cart is not at ease and its driver either, the speed gap with the other users being then substantial.
On the autonomy side, it should also be taken into account that the 75 km announced by Citroën do not hold confrontation with real life. During our daily round trips house/work/races, we traveled between 23 and 30 km per day. However, we consume it between 40 and 50. In winter conditions and with elevation gain – regenerative braking exists but one wonders if it is used for something – count 50 km of autonomy without problem. It is enough, however, to go and come back from work and do some shopping when you live a few 15 km from your workplace. Anyway, it is better not to do more than 30 km in a row so as not to be taken from back pain … On the other hand, the small 5.5 kWh battery recharges on 220V – and only on 220V ! – in 3 hours if it is empty. And we confirm that she does not lose autonomy even if it is not connected.

What to be careful ?
Although it protects from wind and rain and offers, as such, certain advantages compared to a scooter, the friend is not really isolated. If it’s cold outside, it’s cold in it ! Coats and gloves are therefore rigorous, especially since some tunes are going through the cabin and there that heating is more like a fan to desembu. A fog, precisely, which has a hard time leaving if it is cold outside and two adults breathe normally inside. In fact, you sometimes have to accept to open the shutters, even by 0 degree or in the rain ! As for feedback, it also requires attention, because the round mirrors are very small. Angle-mort control remains of rigor.
In addition, the conduct of the friend is simple, given his very small size. But she does not exclude remaining attentive. First of all because the lighting is not perfect and no headlight call exists and especially because there is no ABS. Straking hard on fat or wet ground inevitably leads to wheels blocking and the loss of direction. Since the friend is light and his speed remains restrained at 45 km/h, you never slip very long, but you have to keep in mind, in town, that pedestrians can cross unexpectedly and force braking. In the rain, so cautious in the frequented areas.
Review after 1 month and 500 km
For 4 weeks, the friend has given us all the services imaginable and folded without problem to our pros and personal uses. If you live about twenty kilometers from its workplace by the city, it can quite suit the week. On weekends, the inhabitants of the pavilions will have no trouble recharging it while in the building, it is necessary to plan, either thanks to a public terminal next to it, or limit its use of it.
The first days at its wheel are confusing but you can then get used to its Riquiqui format and the comfort of having a cart parked everywhere, which fears nothing and which allows you to take a passenger or do their shopping without be wet. No need to install a charging station, the friend only tolerates 220V. But that is enough to fill your small battery and offer the necessary autonomy. In the worst winter conditions, 50 km are without risk.
