Test-Citroën C4 x (2023): is the C4 to trunk a 408 low-cost
And the top of the range is embodied by Shine Pack, from € 30,500, and which completes with the semi-autonomous driving system with the automatic transmission, induction smartphone recharge, heated front seats and a plus audio system sophisticated.
Citroën C4 Puretech 155 test: what is the power of C4 worth ?
Citroën C4 Puretech 155 Eat8 test – While The new Peugeot 308 causes its thermal engines to cap at only 130 hp, To encourage the barge to opt for an expensive 180 hp rechargeable hybrid block (36,800 € minimum), its experienced counterpart maintains a simple Puretech engine of 155 hp in its catalog. What’s it worth The most powerful of Citroën C4, Assorted exclusively by an automatic transmission ?
Since its launch in 2020, The new Citroën C4 has generally delighted its users by the comfort that it distills, without having to use a controlled suspension. At equivalent price, or even lower than competition, due to the manufacturer’s aggressive price policy, It really makes the difference in terms of filtration of the road surface. A distinction that it owes as well to the quality of its double hydraulic stop shock absorbers that at Soft of his armchairs. The back of the medal, however, reportsA more pronounced roll socket, Although this 155 hp variant appeared to us better maintained than the rest of the range. The most muscular C4 still remains a placid family, appreciating very little to be brutalized, especially since Its management is far from offering the precision of more sharpened sedans. Definitely, we will appreciate it by leading it to a senator train.
Measured consumption
In terms of consumption, this 155 hp Citroën C4 gave us aA very honest average of 6.4 l On road trips and highway. And this measure has the good taste not to fly in an urban environment. L’Excellent management of its automatic transmission 8 -speed is not unrelated, as is its licked aerodynamics, Incorporating a deficient base. To spoil nothing, Performance is honorable, both from the point of view of raises and acceleration, with a 0 to 100 km/h provided in 8.3 s. Again, the reactivity of the ETA8 transmission works wonders, minimizing the jolts. However, this idyllic table is darkened by the Intense 3-cylinder volclisises, When it is a whipped down, despite the efforts made by home engineers to treat acoustics. I have to say that The C4 does not benefit from a platform as sophisticated as that of the other compacts of the Stellantis group. When the recents), the Citroën is satisfied withA PEUGEOT 208 technical base (CMP) elongated at the maximum of its capacities.
Louter
If the new Citroën C4 is intended welcoming, both in front and in the rear seats, The extension (+ 3 cm) of its template (4.36 m long) does not benefit Chest volume (380 dm 3). For comparison, this measure is 30 l lower than that observed on a (410 L DM 3), yet shorter of 20 cm. The “backpack” of this new C4 is therefore far from fulfilling its function optimally, especially since The feedback is poor, Due to the presence of a huge béquet barring the tailgate window.
Well-being on board
We are more seduced by his dashboard, to the flattering presentation, both in terms of design and quality of materials, often foamy. Globally, The cabin of this Citroën C4 is more rewarding than that of the big brother C5 Aircross, obsessed with hard plastics. The storage is legion there, as well as practical, like the location allocated to the recharge of the smartphone by induction, while the front passenger benefits, in addition to the glove box, ofA drawer intended to accommodate, among other things, a digital tablet. The latter can be fixed in front of you, thanks to a specific dock. We also appreciate, on this automatic transmission variant, the space released between the two front passengers, in theabsence of gear lever, here replaced by a push button most discreet. Ergonomics is also magnified by the maintenance of Physical orders dedicated to air conditioning, not succumbing to fashion at all digital. But we regret that the actuator of the central touch screen was positioned at the right end of its base, forcing the driver to reach out to access them.
Multimedia 1.0
For its part, the digital environment is far from being up to date. If the central tactile slab enjoys an appreciable diagonal of 10 ”, it is sorely lacking in responsiveness, and embarks Out of age software. As for the screen facing the driver, it only extends over 5 ”, and is unable to relay the navigation card, when a brave Peugeot 208 has it. Is it just compensated by the presence of a 7 ”head -up display. In general, the infotainment system of the Citroën C4 will quickly deserve an important overhaul.

Test-Citroën C4 x (2023): is the C4 to trunk a 408 low-cost ?
Of the Citroën C4 that we know since 2020, we retain comfort, practical aspects and the price report – interesting services. By becoming C4 X, she wins centimeters, a large trunk but loses her tailgate. Did the French compact really need this extended variant ? At least, the originality is always in order for this little trivial sedan in the current landscape.
First of all, what does this X mean ? In principle, we would rather expect an evolution of brown inspiration from the current Citroën C4. Not at all: like the previous generation and its Elysée Tricorps version (unknown to us), Citroën extrapolated a classic C4 of its compact chest. In the genus Crossover, no need to add, that said. The C4 had already surprised when it was released by betting without complex the style “High on legs and large plastics”.
The C4 X is therefore a curious car. We find trait for line the front of the compact C4, the thick protection of wheel arches and rocker panels, but the silhouette has nothing more of the fake tunes of modern times of her sister at tailor. Here, the profile hesitates between coupé – 4 doors, clearly typed fastback from ¾ rear, and three conventional volume sedan. Not really the niche that has been a hit lately, but who knows. The classic sedans have fallen into disuse, to the point that they become almost atypical ! Rolling in sedan would it become a brand of snobbery (or return to reason), in reaction to the whole-one ? There is room, of course. In practice, it is rather the VTC and fleets of companies that represent the bulk of the customers.
Technically, the C4 X is therefore a C4 whose rear overhang has been stretched by 24 cm. It’s huge, the length is now 4.60 m. Its high sedan template on legs (15.6 cm ground clearance) the place thus opposite the Renault Arkana, typed SUV – coupe but not so distant in terms of global services. It is also close to the Peugeot 408 (9 cm longer), its distant cousin. in mind only. As a reminder, Citroën is now developing its models from the lower segment platform: unlike the 408, the C4 therefore shares its technical base with the Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa (PSA CMP), stretched at its maximum. Less expensive to design, and to industrialize.
The C4 X is as wide (1.83 m) and high (1.52 m) as the normal C4, the wheelbase remains strictly identical (2.67 m). The additional 24 cm can be found at the rear galls. The silhouette is much more slender.
Good to know: anticipate purchase and resale.
It is possible to know the resale or recovery value of your vehicle thanks to the Turbo car rating of your Citroën C4 X, the alternative to the Argus coast.
XXL hold, giant cabin
It is certainly in this logic that Citroën preferred to graft a classic chest trunk at the C4 X rather than a tailgate, with the more complex cutscene. Result, even if the cut remains relatively wide, access is inevitably much less practical. It pleases some, that said (at the markets in central European and North Africa, especially). Let us admit all the same that the volume is gigantic: 510 L, a record for a sedan which is similar to a compact ! In comparison, the C4 5 doors offers “only” 380 L, which is already generous. The contours are simple and straight, facilitating loading.
We console ourselves by passing on board: the wheelbase has remained identical, the leg space is still as important and the cutting of the pavilion does not penalize the roof in the roof. Not obvious, it should also be noted that the bench file was slightly tilted by the way. The advantages of the C4 are therefore intact, we are well received.
The C4 X cabin is modeled on that of the C4 in tailgate. The dashboard resumes the tips and storage, the neat presentation but without much fantasy. The instrumentation screen is always small and a little too minimalist.
Same observation by driving, where the dashboard did not move an iota. Always the same materials (foamed on a good part of the furniture) and serious assemblies. Without particular luxury, but we always appreciate the vast storage and practical tips. The huge glove box is surmounted by a drawer and a support for tablet or smartphone, for example (only standard from the upper level Shine). However, note the welcome update of the media interface: the graphics are finer, the more fluid and precise operation. Ah, we forgot: the C4 (and the X, therefore) remains one of the few cars to keep real physical commands for ventilation. Some details challenge, however: why adjustment of length seats remains manual, even with the option of electrical settings ?
An authentic Citroën, preferably electric
At the wheel, nothing fundamentally changed compared to the tailgate version. It is not the 30 kg more, at the level of the stern, which will transform its behavior. Always as placid and comfortable. Attention, priority to flexibility ! Some do not necessarily appreciate this bias, but the suspensions with great debatements, associated with the famous waterproofers with hydraulic stops (mounted on the C4 X, absent from the basic versions of the conventional C4) manage to touch Remarkably cozy road. Bleeding, hen nests or small irregularities are erased.
Less practical than the C4 5 -door tailgate, the trunk trunk leads to a gigantic volume: 510 L, it’s huge for a sedan of this template.
Chassis approval is therefore of an excellent, and effective, in the pure tradition of rafters ! The car is relatively light, and healthy in its reactions. The C4 X is therefore one of the most comfortable general sedans of the moment. as long as we avoid jostling it. The movements remain well held, while progressive, but the front axle quickly tends to crash into support, encouraging the restraint.
That’s good: no miracle on the engine side. The range, reduced to its simplest expression, offers only two classic thermal engines: we find the well known three cylinders 1.2 PureTech Essence (two power levels, 100 and 130 hp) and the 4 -cylinder diesel 1.5 BlueHDI (130 hp). Rather efficient and not very greedy, it probably sticks wonderfully to big rollers. Hardly in the air, alas (wrongly). 1.2 petrol 130 hp of our test, coupled with the well -known EAT8 auto box, delivers suitable performance in itself (10.3 s from 0 to 100 km/h), although a little just with passengers and luggage, when the relief is accentuated. Not dramatic, but the strong stresses result in lifting up in noisy diet. More generally, the acoustic and vibrational insulation is not exemplary, even at low speed, and swears with the overall peaceful atmosphere of the car.
The 3 -cylinder, a little rough, denotes with the overall cozy atmosphere of the C4 X. Result, the electric Ë-C4 x is by far the most pleasant in the range ! Could it be voluntary, to force the hand to customers to the 100 % electric ?
Result ? The most homogeneous and pleasant range of the range is… the Electual Electric X, which ensures the top of the range. Technically, it takes up the same configuration as the tailgate Ë-C4, with a 50 kWh (46.2 kWh useful) battery and a 136 hp synchronous electric motor. More torquey (260 nm) than essence, and pleasant in use. Everything is not perfect, however: the accelerations are not so energetic (10 s from 0 to 100 km / h), consumption is high (almost 20 kWh / 100 km noted in mixed, it’s too much for these services ) and logically modest autonomy (approximately 240 km estimated). Nothing famous either when recharging. 100 kW at the maximum in charge CCS, and only a 7.4 kW AC charger is served as standard (11 kW optional at € 400).
On the other hand, the implementation of the T -battery pack, under the central tunnel, lowers the center of gravity and ensures a slightly more locked behavior. Barely more dynamic (it must be said quickly, the management is still as neutral and sluggish), but still as comfortable despite the firmer suspensions to compensate for overweight, which remains fortunately limited (1.584 kg for the electric C4 x). Another good surprise to the electricity credit: the batteries do not penalize the volume of trunk or the space on board.
The range of engines is restricted, and no hybridization on the program, even slight. The electric Ë-C4 x (136 hp), not exemplary in terms of consumption and recharge, should benefit from a large update in mid-2023 … and climb to 156 hp.
Prices: an extension of € 700
Citroën has not become the Dacia of Stellantis, neither in services nor in prices. Far from it, and rates contained do not rhyme with low-cost ! The C4 X starts in call price at 27.€ 650 (Pureteh 100 hp feel), that is significantly higher than the basic tailgate C4 (24.950 €). Please note: it opens its range with a level of lower equipment (live), nonexistent on the trunk version. A finish and equivalent engine, the additional cost of the C4 X represents € 700 on the access model. If the trunk volume is the number 1 criterion, why not. The equipment is quite rich, from the entrance. Way crossing alert, panel reading, hydraulic stop suspensions, media interface. The invoice logically climbs as soon as one is interested in the upper versions. A C4 X PureTech 130 Shine Pack, at 35.€ 050, however compensates for this pretty price by its very complete allocation (Drive assist pack with adaptive regulator and alert of dead angles, head -up display, heated seats). Better placed than Renault Arkana, with a comparable version.
The Ë-C4X, despite the 5 bonus.000 € dedicated to electricity, remains expensive in itself: it begins at 41.€ 900 (before state aid), which is high in view of what competition offers. A Volkswagen ID.3, certainly more compact, starts at 46.€ 750 with a larger battery (58 kWh nets), a much more powerful engine (204 hp) and less consumption. More frontally, the Renault Mégane E-Tech begins at 39.000 € with comparable services but an AC charger of 22 kW as standard. And there again, better energy management.

XXL test – Citroën C4 (2021): everything you need to know
After a few wanderings, Citroën returns to the compact market with a third generation of C4 with an original line worthy of the history of the brand with chevrons. Does she have her chances to win in a very competitive category ? This is what you are told in this test in XXL format.
For this new C4 built on the ECMP platform, Citroën has embarked on a complicated bet by wanting to combine design elements of its models from the past while offering a modern silhouette. And who says modern silhouette in 2021 says SUV, so we have a high ground clearance and gross pastic protections but the whole is embellished with winks to the past like the roof line and the glass parts reminiscent of the GS. We find an evolution of the front of the latest productions of the brand with its spotlights on two levels but the rear is completely original with a black banner including a spoiler on the whole width and a sophisticated tangle of lights.
XXL test – Citroën C4 (2021): everything you need to know
The Citroën C4 offers a palette of 7 body shades but only one is free, the caramel brown, the brand with chevrons according to the same policy as Peugeot by offering a painting highlighting the car and thus serving as a rolling advertising. If not, it will be necessary to add € 200 for the white ice floe and € 650 for a metallic or pearly color, or even € 850 for the red Elixir. You can also choose a color pack adding another color, black, gray, blue, sand or red, at the inserts around the fog lights and on the body protections. However, all combinations are not possible to avoid flaws of taste, but there are still thirty.
Apart from the caramel brown (right), it will be necessary to pay € 650 for a metallic or pearly paint, or even € 850 for the red Elixir (on the left).
On the rims side, the Citroën C4 is not in detail: you have 16 -inch sheet metal rims with an enjolive with the entry level Feel if not 18 inch alloy with four design depending on the finish or the engine.
Only one dimension for alloy rims: 18 inches.
In the passenger compartment, there is a more sober dashboard than the exterior but which does not lack personality, with a nice sleek design and a choice of materials qualitative. In the center, we have a beautiful 10 -inch touch screen housing a fast and easy -to -use multimedia system, and above all leaving physical controls for ventilation and air conditioning management, which is much more practical. The table tarnishes a little by discovering the very small digital instrumentation of only 5 inches which can be fortunately completed depending on the finish by a 7 -inch head display of 7 inch.
The dashboard is more sober than the exterior but does not lack personality however.
But this C4 is widely caught up in the amazing abundance of storage spaces distributed throughout the passenger compartment since it has about fifteen. We will notably remember this amazing drawer in which we can store a tablet, tablet that can also be fixed to cope with the passenger. We also have a double floor accommodation in the lower part of the central console with the possibility of having an induction charger.
Newsletter
Citroën C4 has many storage.
Each finish is entitled to different filling combinations and high finishes can receive black or red leather upholstery with heated and massage front seats against € 1,000.
Habitability question, with a considerable wheelbase of 2.67 m, the space on the back is one, if not the most generous in the category, with two adults that can travel comfortably. And even very comfortably, since for a few years, Citroën has taken a very particular care to the softness of its seats and it feels incredibly well. In addition, despite the fall of the pavilion, it will be necessary to measure more than 1.85 m to touch the roof sky.
The rear passengers are very well lotis, their luggage a little less.
For the trunk, it is average, without more, with 380 liters in five -seater configuration and up to 1,250 liters by folding down the bench file. On the other hand, the loading threshold is low and the cutting of the tailgate is wide, which facilitates its access.
All levels of finish
The Citroën C4 takes up the brand’s traditional finishing levels and we start with Live, available from € 20,900 and only with the PureTech 100 and BlueHDI 110, and which includes emergency braking aid, the alert line crossing, panel recognition, automatic lighting of lights, manual air conditioning, electric windows at the front and rear, electrically and heated adjustment mirrors, a four-speaker audio system with Bluetooth.
Then comes the FEEL finish from € 23,400 and available with all engines except PureTech 155. It adds the electric handbrake, LED projectors, reversing radar, automatic air conditioning, digital instrumentation, 10-inch touch pad, Auto Carplay and six speakers, as well as alloy rims 18 -inch.
Connected multimedia system, LED projectors or even head -up display, Citroën C4 is full of modern equipment.
Feel Pack, from € 26,400, adds the head -up display, rear view camera, electrically folding mirrors and navigation.
We then continue with Shine, from € 27,300, which includes extended emergency braking aid, automatic switching of road lights, front radar, adaptive cruise control, blind spot alert as well as hands -free access and start -ups.
And the top of the range is embodied by Shine Pack, from € 30,500, and which completes with the semi-autonomous driving system with the automatic transmission, induction smartphone recharge, heated front seats and a plus audio system sophisticated.
On the options side, you can also add the 360 ° camera with the Automated car park assistance against € 350, the glass sunroof at 900 € or the heated steering wheel at 150 €.
On the side of engines, only classic and proven. In the species department, the 3 cylinder 1.2 PureTech is offered in 102, 131 and 155 hp. Thanks to a weight contained around 1,200 kg, even the least powerful already offers an amazing versatility allowing to calmly out of the city limits. The intermediary is logically more swively, moreover offering the choice between six -speed manual boxes and eight -speed and the most gourmet will turn to the top of the range necessarily associated with automated transmission. A defect common to the three, however: a certain appetite if you do not adopt the most economical of the pipes.
Citroën continues to offer a diesel, 4 -cylinder 1.5 BlueHDI in two power levels, 110 and 130 hp. Again, the first already offers an approval all that is most suitable by associating it with low consumption, so much so that we can only advise the second if you absolutely want the automatic transmission with which it is the only one who can be associated.
But the big novelty in the mechanical radius is the arrival of an electric version called Ë-C4 and which takes up the powertrain of the Peugeot E-2008, namely a 136 hp engine and a 50 kWh battery allowing it official autonomy 350 km, all with well -placed prices starting at € 35,600.
The Citroën Ë-C4, the first real electric brand of the chevron brand.
City
The key word in the specifications of this new C4 is comfort, a comfort that goes as much by the gradual hydraulic stop suspensions as by the softness of the seats, and we already feel it in town. It is moreover between a classic sedan and a SUV but still has the driving position of the second, which allows to see far.
Road
On the other hand, this comfort is paid once out of the limits of the city with a roll pronounced in turn that does not help a direction not transmitting much information. We understood, the C4 does not like to be abrupt.
Motorway
On the highway, the comfort resumes its rights and you can easily investigate many kilometers without feeling fatigue at the seat as at the back. Citroën could just have done a little better in filtration, both in terms of air noise and bearings.
Whatever the profile of the road, comfort is the key word aboard the C4.
The compact category is highly competitive with rivals like the Renault Mégane, the Peugeot 308 or the Kia Ceed which are all more dynamic, but the Citroën C4 has some advantages that can allow it to pull out of the game, starting by its innovative line which allows it to distinguish itself and to cause a crush purchase in a segment which does not shine by its originality. But that’s not all since it also has remarkable habitability at the rear, establishes new comfort standards in the category and positions itself aggressively at the rate level.
