Today, Tesla is the only manufacturer to have a Fast charge network network, Supercharters. With 12.000 charging points worldwide, Californian prides itself on covering 99 % of the population in the United States, a target at the end of 2019 in Europe and 90 % in China. While Elon Musk estimated a few months ago that it was superfluous to exceed 200 kW, the third generation of Supercharger finally offers more. It’s a power of 250 kW which will be delivered by the new stations. And maybe even a little more, since the video that announces the event reports a peak at 256 kW. Enough logically, with a doubled power, Tesla expects to see the downtime divided in half. What reduce the journey time on long courses, but also improve fluidity to stations, some being sometimes victims of their success during the great departures, especially in California.
A power of 250 kW for new superchargers
With these new stations, Tesla announces that the load peaks correspond to a autonomy recovery of 1.600 km per hour of load… of course taking into account the standardized autonomy on cycle. In 5 minutes, there are 120 km of autonomy. The manufacturer believes that the average charge time will now be 15 minutes. This corresponds to a passage from 20 % to 80 % of the level of the battery. Note also that a software update of the cars detects, thanks to the navigation data, when the car is about to arrive at a supercharger. The battery then automatically rises in temperature, to be able to accept the maximum load power from the first seconds of connection.
Tesla’s announcement appears remarkable, at a time when competitors are capsize for the moment at 100 kW. Only the Audi e-tron, whose marketing is imminent, announces to accept a load of 150 kW. But this is only available on the Ionity terminals, still few. Tesla therefore resumes a good step ahead of the competition. For the moment, only Porsche announces a higher charge power (350 kW) with its future Taycan, which will be launched in 2020. Note, however, that the maximum power of 250 kW For the moment only the Model 3, whose battery was designed from the start to support such power. A software update is planned to increase the load speed of Model S and Model X, but we do not yet know what proportions.
Tesla begins today the conversion of its charge stations. To do this, electrical cabinets capable of delivering 1 MW (identical to those which will be deployed on the megazzles), the stations dedicated to the Tesla Semi electric truck) will replace the current. The first open station is in the bay of San Francisco. It will be a test phase, before deploying the final versions in April.
