With 850 terminals, Carrefour Energies claims to be the first charging network in France. Really ?

With Carrefour, I (terminal) positive. Especially when I drive in electric car. The brand announces that it has launched its hundredth charging station in France, for a total of 850 charges, half of which in “high power”, claiming to be the first national network. And she has her foot on the accelerator, with the ambition of opening still 700 stations in the next two years.

With 850 terminals, Carrefour Energies claims to be the first recharge network in France. Really ?

After a year of existence (Carrefour Energies was launched on March 30, 2022), the large distribution brand communicates. And proudly.

“”Carrefour has just crossed the course of 100 charging stations for electric vehicles, and
thus becomes the first network of terminals in France with more than 850 charging points whose
half in high power (up to 300 kW), distributed throughout the territory.“specifies the press release.

Things have therefore been fairly quickly, since the inauguration of the first charging station located at the Saint-Luc chapel (near Troyes, in dawn) on April 8, 2022. And the ambition is to equip 200 stores from more by the end of 2023 and 800 at the end of 2025.

For this, Carrefour is based on two providers: Allego, who set up the first stations and who will continue to do it to the rhythm of 100 stations per year, for the “hypers”, and now Driveco, who inaugurated his first two Stations in Vire (14) and Estaires (59) and which must deploy 600 in two years, especially in the supermarkets of small and medium -sized common (Carrefour Market).

“”To reach our goal of 5,000 charges and 800 stations by 2025, the deployment will further accelerate with an average of the opening of almost 30 new stations each month ! Thanks to the work of all the teams of Carrefour Energies and our partners, we deploy a network of charging stations with a unique territorial network, as close as possible to our customers.“Are the words of Arnaud d’Hoop, director of innovation and new business.

Lidl in ambush

By announcing these figures, Carrefour Energies would indeed seem to do better than its competitors. However, it is to be seen, when it remains complicated to obtain the number of terminals deployed by the competitors. The Leclerc network understands to the latest new 170 stores equipped with charging stations, but apparently fewer terminals in all. LIDL, very active on the niche, announces for its part a target of 3,000 terminals installed at the end of 2023, and would be at 900 charges in February 2023. Which would be better than Carrefour, both today, and as a goal.

On the side of Auchan, another heavyweight, we would be 103 “charging areas”. Aldi also offers dedicated areas in some of its parking lots, without communicating on the number in France. At Ionity, which certainly practical essentially rapid recharging, we are at 120 stations for around 520 charging points.

22 to 300 kW terminals and the first hour free in 22 kW

In any case, the participation of Carrefour in the territorial network is undoubtedly important, and helps to reach the objective of the 100,000 charging stations available. Those installed range from the accelerated load 22 kW by alternating current, to quick recharge up to 300 kW. The terminals are supplied with green electricity by Enedis.

And good to know, the first hour of charging on the 22 kW terminals is free for carriers of the Carrefour loyalty card, or the Pass card, a customer advantage “between 3 and 6 €”. Yes, it advertises, but it is not useless to specify it. Especially since Carrefour does not do this by philanthropy. This allows, just like displaying low prices at the “fossil fuels” pump, to bring (and stay during the load !) Customers in their brand. Not crazy.
