The byd Seagull electric car promises to be with an unbeatable price

This Tuesday, April 11, the Chinese manufacturer byd (world number 2 of the electric car behind Tesla) held a press conference in Belgium for the European launch of two new electric cars: the byd Dolphin (detailed in another article) and byd Seal as we can see in a press release. We could see the latter at the Paris Motor Show in October 2023.

Byd Seal

The byd Seal is an electric sedan of the world number 2, positioning itself as a direct competitor of the Tesla Model 3. It has a power of 313 horsepower in its propulsion version which fell a 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds (530 horsepower in the all -wheel drive version thanks to a second 218 horsepower engine with 3.8 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h), an 82 kWh battery providing it with a range of 570 km depending on the WLTP cycle and has current continuous quick support (up to 150 kW) for recharge from 30 to 80 % in 26 minutes.

Learn more about the byd Seal

This Tuesday, April 11, the Chinese manufacturer byd (world number 2 of the electric car behind Tesla) held a press conference in Belgium for the European launch of two new electric cars: the byd Dolphin (detailed in another article) and byd Seal as we can see in a press release. We could see the latter at the Paris Motor Show in October 2023.

The byd Seal is an electric car of the road sedan type. With its 4.8 meters long, its 1.875 m wide, its 402 -liter trunk and its fruit (front trunk) of 53 liters, it is planned to cut the road. Especially with its wheelbase of 2.92 meters, which augurs the good in terms of habitability. We hope, given the volume of the trunk, not really up to the length of the machine.

Two versions available: propulsion or integral

The European version incorporates a 230 kW electric motor (313 hp) on the rear axle, making it a propulsion. In all -wheel drive, there is this same 230 kW engine seconded by another 160 kW engine (218 hp) for a total power of 390 kW (530 hp) sent to four wheels. The exercise from 0 to 100 km/h is shot in 5.9 seconds for the first against 3.8 seconds for the second.

From a point of view of autonomy, the byd Seal has an LFP battery with a capacity of 82 kWh. We find BYD Blade technology, with CTB integration (Cell to body) to optimize the traction chain. Which results in theoretical autonomy on the mixed WLTP cycle of 570 km in propulsion version and 520 km in the most powerful version. This good autonomy is permitted by a favorable CX (COSE (.

Not so fast recharge

The charging power is limited to 150 kW, which results in the facts by 26 to 30 minutes to go from 30 to 80 %. It is long, since European electric cars are demanding approximately 30 minutes to go from 10 to 80 %, or even 18 minutes for hyundai and electric porsche in 800 volts. By alternating current, the on -board charger can collect 11 kW. The heat pump and the V2L bidirectional load are delivered as standard.

Small bonus: Byd Seal incorporates a semi-active suspension based on variable frequency shock absorbers. What offer good comfort on degraded roads. Be careful however, these are not pneumatic suspensions as found in the byd Han or the Tesla Model S. But this suspension is compatible with the new prediction functionality unveiled by byd very recently. The car supports Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

Price and availability

The byd Seal will be available in Belgium from September 2023. For France, you will still have to wait before having other information. No word has yet been given on the European price of the sedan, which would be announced by August.

However, this is already marketed in China, from 262,800 yuan (around 35,000 euros). But beware, Chinese prices will not be the same in Europe at all. Take the example of the byd Han: it is sold from 299,800 yuan (around 39,900 euros) in China while it is sold 70,800 euros in France. We must therefore expect at a starting price of around 60,000 euros for the byd seal. Either the price of a Tesla Model 3 Performance.

So, a Tesla Model S at the price of a Tesla Model 3, really ? We will have to wait for the European prices and the first tests to make an opinion on the question. But autonomy and performance are lower, as is rapid recharging. And without counting on the infotainment system which seems much less suitable for European customers than at Tesla.

Her name means “seagull” in English and if she behaves like the bird, she could well make noise if she arrives in France. With its entry ticket around 10,400 euros and its attractive characteristics, the Chinese Seagull byd would ride on the BestSeller Plashes that is the Dacia Spring.

Here is a newcomer to the universe universe of electric city cars that could make manufacturers tremble if it arrives in Europe. The Seagull of the Chinese brand byd has just been unveiled during the Shanghai Auto Show which is currently being held in China. She has no shortage of assets to seduce, starting with her price. It would cost the equivalent of 10,400 euros, that is to say much cheaper than our Franco-Romanian bestseller, the Dacia Spring. The small city car Spring costs around 20,000 euros without the ecological bonus of 7,000 euros. Even without it, the Chinese could then crush any competition in the electric city car sector.

But for the moment the brand has not indicated whether it wishes to market the Seagull in Europe. The city car is 3.78 m long, 1.71 m wide and 1.54 m in height, that is to say almost the same proportions as the Spring precisely. On the other hand, its design that is both racy, modern and sympathetic takes it enormously from the Dacia model. Two engines are offered with a 74 hp or 100 hp engine. The first allows you to reach 50 km/h in less than five seconds, which is honorable and faster than Spring. On the battery side, depending on the power, we benefit from a capacity of 30 or 38 kWh.

Sodium batteries ?

What would explain the floor floor price of the car car is the technology potentially used for this battery. Even if the information is not confirmed, it could be sodium-ion type. Due to this component, the cost of producing such a battery would therefore be much less expensive than for the usual lithium models lithium . Regarding autonomy, on paper it is very attractive. For the small battery, it would be 306 kilometers and for the other 405 kilometers. It is much more than the 227 kilometers given for the Dacia Spring. But beware, Chinese measures are much more optimistic than Europeans, who are themselves overvalued. These batteries also have the advantage of supporting the fast load. With it, they can go from 30 to 80 % in around thirty minutes. Inside, we can only notice the presence of the large multimedia screen of 12.8 inch, which remains surprising for a car of this price and that we do not find at all on the Spring. For driving, there is also a 5 -inch digital display. This set is based on its new E-Platform 3 platform.0 of the manufacturer.

This portrait and this price seem perfect, but it remains to be seen whether the car meets European standards, especially from the security point of view to be marketed in our countries.
