BMW i4 Edrive35: Full test of the Anti Tesla Model 3, BMW i4 Edrive35 2023: Price, Specs & Technical Sheet – Auto Guide

BMW i4 Edrive 35

If the BMW i4 Edrive35 is efficient and effective for daily use, remains the question of the price. A few months ago, the € 53,550 of departure had something to attack the Tesla Model 3. It was without counting the price increase in early 2023, which brought the entry ticket to € 57,550 ! On a personal level, however, your servant would without hesitation this i4 and his dynamic qualities. An electric hidden among thermal, pleasant by its traditional approach. But at 4,000 € more now than the expected price, and on a more pragmatic level therefore, the Model 3 retains serious arguments. And that’s without counting its recent price reductions ! One thing is certain, if she had kept her starting rate range, there would have been more than match ! But between price increase and optional option catalog at the very least, the price argument leans without surprise in favor of Californian. Because our test model adopts rims, a painting, and on -board options that increase the bill to € 64,415. So yes, who says BMW always says premium experience and manufacturing quality and high -flying finishes. But unless I am a big lover of the brand (I plead guilty !) or simply sufficiently sensitive to these perceived quality aspects and feeling on board, it is clear that the Edrive35 risks not convincing everyone. And you, what do you prefer ?

Video trial – BMW i4 Edrive35: Anti Tesla Model 3 par excellence ?

That’s it, the new BMW i4 Edrive35 is out ! Running just finished, it is on clean automobile that you can discover the first test of the electric sedan. So what is the I4 entry -level worth on a daily basis ? Our full trial of the German Anti Tesla Model 3.

Available at the order since September 2022, the BMW i4 Edrive35 is now presented to the press. The opportunity for us to prepare you the first test of the sedan, freshly established after some 900 km. As a reminder, the German is in this less powerful, but also less enduring version in terms of autonomy. The ambitions of the Bavarus could not be clearer: going to hunt on the field of the Tesla Model 3. But let’s not forget, the recent pricing increases should calm the ardor of the interested parties … Let’s go for the test, the performances, and the consumption of the new BMW i4.

The BMW i4 edrive35 Look side: electric discretion

The wolf in the sheepfold. This is what our BMW i4 Edrive35 test evokes, and for good reason. Because apart from external logos (hood, tailgate, and rims), no “electric” blue to report. You already know it, the BMW i4 retains the visual identity of the brand’s thermal models. A silhouette of Gran Coupé inherited from the first 4 series (F36), both sporty and elegant. The dynamic and raced look is therefore there, especially with our two-color rims in 18 inch. Our Skyscraper Grau Metallic color model is in the sobriety. Personally, your servant largely prefers this “real car” look to the many electricity trends. Not surprisingly, and premium positioning obliges, the vehicle benefits from impeccable assemblies and finishes. From the outside, our i4 is consistent with its ambitions.

Understand there that it would have been more difficult to find a relevant m sport finish given the performance. A bit like a small BMW 1 114D series, effective, moreover, but overloaded with purely aesthetic “sporting” attributes so. And then, sobriety is sufficient on such a size. Its dimensions: 4.78 m long and 1.85 m wide (excluding mirrors), and 1.44 m high. Count 2.08 m wide with the deployed mirrors. For the small comparison with the Tesla Model 3, we will simply note +9 cm in length. The electric charging hatch is placed on the right, nothing new on this side. If it is placed at the entry level, the BMW i4 Edrive35 remains completely serious and rewarding. Outside, no concession is made on quality (handles, grille, chrome rushes, lighting, etc.).

On board: high-tech experience, premium comfort

Fortunately, the treatment taken inside is not limited to the high -end sporting BMW i4 M50. Good news, Deutsche Qualität does not continue in the cabin of our BMW i4 Edrive35. The car welcomes us in a neat interior, all that is “the most” thermal “. After all, the i4 being based on the CLAR modular platform of the BMW group, it is not a surprise. It also means that the space on board is less “free”, as the imposing central tunnel reminds us. The middle passenger is inevitably less well installed than his neighbors. The other four occupants are better installed but confined, and the more than 1.80 m may feel a little cramped, it must be admitted. The regulars of the brand will appreciate the traditional position of sporting driving but comfortable at the wheel of the sedan. The black leather upholstery participates in the sober but neat atmosphere of this interior.

On the other hand, no electrical settings for our test model. The rest is no less complete. Central console, black lacquered inserts … It’s clean. On board, we will even admit a perceived quality greater than the current big thermal sister series 4 Gran Coupé. But the big piece is obviously this particularly flattering double screen, all in width. 12.3 inches for the digital instrumentation handset, and 14.9 inches for the central touch screen. The latter is not only reactive and fluid, but above all maximizes the Carplay and Android Auto experience. The extended display is in any case comfortable to use on a daily basis. For its part, the handset takes up the classic Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro interfaces of this BMW i4 Edrive35. Special mention to the head -up, versatile and customizable display. We will still take care to lower the night light. Finally, in terms of “on board” assets, let’s not forget the trunk ! With a useful volume ranging from 470 to 1,290 L at the rear, the BMW i4 offers a very practical loading capacity.

Electrical performance: sufficient daily

Only little frustration on board ? The equipment available in “integrated purchase” on the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. For example, the command of automatic road lights is there, but the functionality is not activated. An operating logic to which we will have to get used to anyway. Let’s go to performances. The BMW i4 Edrive35 is a propulsion (such as the EDRIVE40) of 210 kW / 286 hp for 400 nm of torque. Enough to shoot 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds, like its Californian rival with equivalent configuration. Driving and under the foot, our i4 is more than every day, with all the advantages of an electric. Absolute silence, immediate responsiveness at start -up and during insertions/overruns. It’s lively, it’s reactive, and propulsion requires, it even keeps fun ! Accustomed to the brand, I find there the personality inherent in the rear wheels motor. Electric certainly, but still “Béhème”.

In dynamic driving, the BMW i4 Edrive35 knows how to be precise and locked. There is room before taking roll on a roundabout. In sport mode, available power and cartography have something to hunt back without forcing too much. However, this does not prevent him from being reassuring and very healthy in the rain. Very easy direction, damping a firm hair on degraded but comfortable pavement overall, the sedan is pleasant on a daily basis. Thank you the rims in 18. The i4 knows how to be pleasant in town, we evolve with serenity while enjoying visibility from the driving position. We will still be attentive to our environment during half-tours. Because with a 12.5 m robbery diameter, it will take a little more vigilance than compact. In particular with a relatively low driving position.

Consumption and autonomy: up to 400 km ?

But what interests us above all is its autonomy. Especially after the measures of the Edrive40 during the superstation of our specialist. The BMW Edrive35 is equipped with a 68 kWh (70.2 kWh gross) battery and claims 483 km of autonomy. During our test week, we favored Eco Pro mode with energy recovery set to “adaptive”. Besides, we would have liked driving palettes to directly manage the level of regeneration. On certain urban courses, mode B allows us to go into “one pedal” from time to time. In town as on fast ways, the adaptive regulator is required for optimal management of diet climbs, and gentle decelerations. Moreover, our good ecocondumed practices are limited to moderating our accelerations and anticipating our braking to minimize demand and maximize recovery.

BMW i4 Edrive35 and Electra

At the wheel, there is a feeling of heaviness during very “eco” starts, however, attributable to the 2,065 kg of the beast. By bringing these different criteria together, our first mixed cycle authorizes us an autonomy of 400 km. Which corresponds to an average consumption of 17 kWh/100 km all round. By using and abusing mode B in town, we reach 425 km or 16 kWh/100 km. The perfectly flat roads being only a sweet dream, here are some consumption measures whose impact is far from negligible. Especially on a fast track, from the Paris ring road to the highway.

Speed (regulator) Conso (dish) Consumption (false flat)
50 km/h (constant) 12.8 kWh/ 100 km 15.2 kWh/ 100 km
50 km/h (city) 16 kWh/ 100 km 16 kWh/ 100 km
70 km/h 14.5 kWh/ 100 km 18 kWh/ 100 km
90 km/h 17.8 kWh/ 100 km 20 kWh/ 100 km
110 km/h 18.5 kWh/ 100 km 23 kWh/ 100 km
130 km/h 24 kWh/ 100 km 30 kWh/ 100 km

Expert on its thermal engines, BMW proves to us its mastery of consumption on its electrical engines. If the 483 km promised remain optimistic without being an absolute fantasy either, a mixed daily use allows us about 400 km. On a long motorway course, the 24 kWh/100 km at 130 km/h in theory allow 283 km between two complete cycles on paper. In real conditions, it goes without saying that we will recharge a little earlier in the best conditions, in order to avoid any unnecessary stress. If our i4 edrive35 is certainly a gran cut to the inheritance of road, we prefer to consider that the introduction of this new engine and its real autonomy is not intended to meet the user needs “long routes”. But that it is rather a beautiful BMW reserved on a daily basis, to use for Els Vacances by providing for a few additional stops. What do you think ?

Consumption Autonomy
24 kWh/ 100 km 283 km
19 kWh/ 100 km 357 km
17 kWh/ 100 km 400 km
16 kWh/ 100 km 425 km

Finally, the BMW i4 Edrive35 is just as good student in recharge. Even if its power caps at 180 kW against 205 kW for its counterparts EDRIVE40 and M50. With the BMW Charging Pass card provided, we operated the Electra stations (peak at 75 kW), and Ionity (peak at 180 kW), both in CCS. Here are our different charges.

Recharge Loading time
10 to 80 % (peak 75 kW) 46 min
10 to 80 % (peak 180 kW) 33 min
100 % (peak 75 kW) 2h20
