The best free application

Comments: Very good, I use Bitwarden every day and I am satisfied with the features of the free version. We forget the Excel files and easily access all our passwords on any device with the web version of Bitwarden. I recommend this application 100%, you will not be disappointed.

For the free version, it offers lots of sufficient feature for personal use.We can generate several passwords, configure the password (choose the password length, if you want special characters, if you want figures, the number of figures you want in the password, and the number of special character) we can add a description, associate an email address or a website with each password. The option to be able to copy your username and the password is really great too.

In the free version, if you forget or lose your master password, it’s over. You will have to create a new account.

Relatively complete and free password manager, software open source Bitwarden is a solution that will easily evolve towards a group with paid offers for companies or multi-users.

Presentation

It was following the buyout of Lastpass by the Logmein2 company that the developer Kyle Spearrin set out to find a solution to manage his passwords. Tired, either the other software used a proprietary code, or, such as Keepass, they had a little engaging interface. He then decided to finance the development of an alternative on Kickstarter, the first Bitwarden version seeing the light of day on August 10, 2016.

The application is now available in version 1.45 for many platforms and its code is open source. If you have the technical capacity, you can perfectly examine the said code. Like Lastpass, and unlike Dashlane, Bitwarden is offered free of charge in a version that does not limit the number of stored sesames or that of synchronized devices. Paid versions, however, allow access to more features.

To ensure the proper functioning of its system, Bitwarden asked an audit to a third -party company (Cure53), while integrating its software into a buck -up research program (bugboundy), Hackerone.

Facility

For our test, we installed the utility in its version 1.45 on macOS and Android. Conventionally, the opening of an account requires a login and a password. Make sure to enter the index dedicated to the recovery of the latter, because you will be the only one to know-Bitwarden works in Zero Knowledge.

When creating the account, Bitwarden ensures that you use a sufficiently robust password, but does not impose anything on you. You are then directed to your online safe and can start recording your data. By validating your email, you unlock certain additional features. We thus recommend activating double authentication to secure more access to your passwords with a second code. To do this, go to the safe settings. Bitwarden recommends the use of Authy on iOS and Android, but we were able to authenticate with Google Authentifier. However, we could not access our account with the Freeotp software.

You can also use a physical U2F (Universal 2 Factor) authentication key proposed by the Fido Alliance, such as Yubikey or Thetis – This option is not paid unlike Dashlane. In addition, you can use the fingerprint reader on Windows computer, but Apple laptops are excluded (to our knowledge, only Dashlane offers this possibility).

From the web safe, you can then download applications and extensions for your internet browsers. Remember to configure their safety by fixing the expiration time of the safe.

One of the interesting features of Bitwarden is the possibility of installing the password management solution on your own computer server, without having to use the cloud developer. This requires some computer skills, but the operation is relatively simple to implement.

Universality

The possibility of operating a password manager with many browsers and IT environments is essential in order to access the data quickly and in most situations. On this point, Bitwarden is a good student and works on a wide variety of operating systems (MacOS, Linux, Windows) and a large number of Internet browsers, from Chrome to Firefox via the less known Brave, Opera or Vivaldi. In addition, the safe is accessible via a web interface to, once again, guarantee good accessibility. Know that Bitwarden also works in command lines, but this is a use reserved for terminal lovers.

On the side of the mobiles, Bitwarden is conventionally available for Android and iOS, thus covering almost all of the current models.

Features

Export your identifiers from Chrome and Safari

It is often easier to manually export your data to a universal type format .CSV to recover the identifiers. Please note, the file created is no longer encrypted and everyone can read it. Remember to delete the file after import and erase your browsers to avoid disappointments. In addition, it may be necessary to deactivate the recording function of the browser identifiers.

Import of data

Quite surprisingly, it is not possible to import data from other software from Bitwarden or its extension for browser. It is advisable to connect to the web version of the safe to access the import menu. Bitwarden anymore data from software, but allows you to keep certain data structures to import, and the list of compatible software is rather provided.

Let us recall in passing that the export of data from the Lockwise manager of Mozilla (Firefox) is complex. Fortunately, one of Bitwarden’s developers offers a small utility here to facilitate the recovery of its data.

Password management and other data

In its free version, Bitwarden allows you to store all sesames on as many devices available. We are therefore quite far from the free dashlane offer limited to 50 passwords and a single device. During our tests, we have not encountered a major problem of recording and restitution of password, with the notable exception of Firefox. Indeed, in private mode, the extension for the Mozilla browser simply does not work. For most sites with conventional identification systems, the recording of passwords went perfectly. As for the more “exotic” sites, it will probably be necessary to edit the identification sheet and manually fill the fields which have not been taken into account. On this point, Bitwarden is a little less flexible than the competition.

By default, Bitwarden does not automatically fill the connection fields of a site: it displays on the icon a figure which indicates the number of entries available to its base. You must then press the extension button to access the different identities and fill the required fields. An all-automatic mode can be activated in software options.

Oddly, it is not possible to edit or delete identities from the extension of browsers. To do this, you should connect to the online application or safe, which is frustrating.

The Bitwarden password generator allows you to personalize their creation by choosing the length, the addition of numbers and/or symbols. It is also possible to create “pass sentences” (passphrase), a method that has been on the rise for several years already in terms of security. Unlike other solutions (Dashlane, Lastpass), it is not possible to automatically change passwords from certain sites.

In addition to connection identifiers, Bitwarden allows you to store identities, payment cards or customizable notes to quickly fill in forms or keep sensitive documents.

In “free” version, it is not possible to obtain a state of health of the key trousseau, which usually makes it possible to determine the level of safety of the identifiers and to identify certain redundancies. To activate these functions, it will be necessary to pay a subscription of $ 10/year. Bitwarden nevertheless proposes to monitor your email address and alert you if it is compromised.

Bitwarden proposes to share the identifiers between several users, but it is necessary beforehand to create an organization, to invite members to finally share documents and identifiers. The creation of an organization is available in the free version, but limited to a single other person. Again, a premium subscription will have to be taken out to lift this barrier.

Mobile app

The application is naturally available under iOS and Android (tested version) and allows access to practically all software features in computer version. However, it does not use certain capacities of the smartphone to, for example, easily digitize a payment card – a practical, but non -essential option. For the rest, the Android app looks like two drops of water to its counterpart desktop, with the same advantages and disadvantages. Thus, it is not possible to erase an identity or import a list of passwords from the application. Bitwarden is however capable of using biometric recognition to facilitate access to its data.

Paid offer

If the free version of Bitwarden may suit many users, a paid offer is available to facilitate teamwork, with the possibility of sharing passwords or storing up to 1 GB of documents. The paid offer at $ 10/year also offers access to priority treatment on technical support. Note that Bitwarden has a very affordable family offer at $ 1/month for five users and 1 GB of storage, making it a really interesting solution in this context.

Even in a paid version, it is missing a few features to place itself at the level of Dashlane and Lastpass. Thus, the solution does not propose to define a confidence person, who could have access to your data in the event of a problem and according to a modular temporality.
