Choice of the most suitable backup method
If you want one day to have another backup, you can make a backup of your device in iCloud and using your computer. Find out how to save your device or restore your devices from a backup.
iCloud
- Backups are stored on iCloud.
- You can get up to 2 TB of storage (up to 4 TB with an Apple One Premium package).
- The backups are always encrypted.
- You can create and use backups wherever you are, as long as you have access to Wi-Fi connection.
Computer
- Your backups are stored on your Mac or PC.
- The amount of space available for backups depends on free space on your Mac or PC.
- Backups can be encrypted (this option is deactivated by default).
- Backups can be created and used from your Mac or PC.
ICloud backups
When you have a connection to a Wi-Fi network, you can save your device data using iCloud. It is not necessary to connect the device to a computer to perform a backup on iCloud.
- The data already stored in iCloud, such as contacts, calendars, notes, iCloud photo content, iMessages, vocal memos, text messages (SMS) and multimedia (MMS), and data from the Health Health ;
- data recorded via other services in the cloud, such as Gmail or Exchange messages;
- Apple Mail data;
- the information and adjustments linked to Apple Pay;
- Face settings ID and Touch ID;
- The contents of the iCloud music library and the App Store.
When you use messages on iCloud, data from the IOS 12 app or vocal memos, your content is automatically stored in iCloud. If you activate iCloud photos, your content is also automatically stored in iCloud.
Backups from your computer
A backup of your device from a computer, which is different from synchronization, includes almost all of the data and settings of your device. A backup from a computer does not include the following elements:
- The content from the iTunes Store and the App Store, as well as the PDFs downloaded directly in Apple Books;
- the content synchronized from the Finder or iTunes (videos, books, photos, CD and MP3 imported, for example);
- the data already stored in iCloud, such as iCloud photo content, iMessages and text messages (SMS) and multimedia (MMS);
- Face settings ID and Touch ID;
- the information and adjustments linked to Apple Pay;
- Apple Mail data;
- Trousseau data and health and activity apps (to save them, you must activate the option of encryption of backups in iTunes).
Can I use my device backup for another type of device, for example the backup of an iPhone for an iPad ?
You can restore a device from a backup created on another type of device (for example, the backup of iPad data for an iPhone), however certain content types will not be transferred. This content includes photos, messages and attachments of messages, vocal memos and apps not compatible with the device you want to configure. For example, apps that are only compatible with the iPad are not transferred to an iPhone.
If your devices use iCloud and messages on iCloud, your images, SMS and MMS are automatically stored in iCloud.
