Note: Since the iPhone 11 Pro Max test was posted before that of 11 pro, we encourage you to read the 11 Pro Max test to find our conclusions concerning the performance, software and quality of the screen.

We live the golden age of smartphones, the improvements made to smartphones each year are far from seismic. Devices that are two years old remain fashionable and are still able to stand up to new arrivals. Look at the iPhone X or the Samsung Galaxy S9: they are running everything, take advantage of the latest bone updates and are still good photophones. Only autonomy can be lacking. In short, difficult to create the revolution in this sector, unless you take risks who do not pay as much as we could bet it.

Last year, the iPhone XR was an unexpected success. All the attention of Apple fans turned to XS (max), but in reality, many users have chosen the XR. This year, the temptation to opt for the entry -level model is even greater, because the name is identical. As a little suspicious buyer, you immediately have the idea that you will get about the same thing, but for a few hundred euros less. If I was a user normal, Probably I will go to an iPhone 11 in one of the new colors.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro Design, Size and Ergonomics

The iPhone 11 Pro has a frosted glass design similar to that of the iPhone XS. The biggest change concerns the additional camera in the back and the fact that the camera lenses are placed slightly differently. Instead of a neat row with two lenses, you now have a slightly disorderly square, with quirky objectives.

Frankly, I expected something really ugly based on the photos that had been published before the announcement. In hand, you get there. It’s not ugly, but to be honest, I think Apple could have conceived it much better.

At the front, the device remained the same: a black surface (the screen) with a notch at the top, which is just as large as before. However, the identification of faces with Face ID has been improved: according to the apple brand, it works faster and from a wider angle. In practice, however, we have not noticed a lot of differences, in any case it is not a reason to update an iPhone X.

At the bottom, there is always a Lightning connection and the pimples and holes of the speakers are in the same place.

Apple has not yet opted for USB-C and it’s annoying. If you already have an iPad Pro 2018, you will have two different connectors. It is true that by keeping the Lightning connection, your accessories continue to work. But Apple will probably do the transition one day and in my opinion, it was the right time.

The finishes of the material on the back have changed: the back is made of matt glass. The advantage of the matt finish is that you do not see the traces of fatty fingers easily. An additional advantage of the matt back is that you immediately feel the front and back of the device in your pocket. It is appreciable: I leave the device much less often of my pocket in the wrong direction.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro screen, software and performance

Regarding the screen (an OLED slab), the software (iOS 13) and the performance (in play and on benchmarks), we send you back to the test of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Note, however, that we really have a much more compact screen diagonal on the iPhone 11 Pro, 5.8 inch (6.5 inches for the 11 pro Max). The smartphone is therefore more pleasant to one hand, it is also more pleasant to house it in a jeans pocket with its reduced dimensions.

Note also that IOS is more suitable for small formats. The backtracking is often housed at the top left of the screen, which takes it away from the thumb when the phone is held in the right hand.

Apple iPhone 11 pro quality photos and videos

With the iPhone 11 Pro, everything revolves around the camera, because this is where the biggest innovations are. A logical choice of Apple, because there is still a lot to do. And I must admit, this new system of cameras of the iPhone 11 Pro brings Apple back to the foreground in terms of photography. But Apple’s advance is small. Maybe Google will soon surprise us with the Pixel 4.

At the same time, I must also admit that the camera interface has become a little more complicated because of all these extras. This also applies to retouching possibilities after taking a photo. In addition to basic filters and functions, there are now many more options that can make this photo application once so simple a bit confusing.

In the end, you therefore have an optical zoom 0.5x, 1x and 2x at your disposal. Compared to a camera equivalent, you have a target of 13 mm, 26 mm and 52 mm in your pocket, without having to juggle awkwardly with the objectives.

Ultra Grand Angle

The most remarkable novelty on the iPhone 11 camera is the ultra-angle goal (0.5x). The use of this mode is simple and transparent: you pinch to the outside to make a rear zoom. You can also switch to this mode when you are in wide angle mode (1x), you are revealed to you a wider frame visible through the capture interface.

IMG_0313

IMG_0312

Watch out for the framing: we quickly left a piece of finger so much it’s wide. If you have never had an Android smartphone with an ultra-angle, you will be surprised and quickly seduced by this type of camera. Personally, I discovered that with the LG G5. The ultra-big angle camera can nevertheless lead you to make mistakes: it is not stabilized (not great for videos), it lacks dive and it is a much less bright camera (ƒ2.4) that the high angle camera.

The perspective generates deformations, but this makes it possible to obtain unique shots, although the photos lack details. I advise you to force a more oblique perspective and play on the leakage points, you can also include a net element in the foreground. Despite its flaws, the ultra-big angle quickly becomes very practical to capture scenes, but do not focus on the details of the captured photos.

Low light mode

New iPhone also have a new mode to take photos in low light. Once the camera has detected that a scene is very dark, it automatically activates this mode you. On the Pixel 3, the operation is different: in automatic mode, we offer it if necessary, but this requires an action from the use, otherwise you can manually activate it all left in the menu.

The result is that the photos taken in low light without flash have a lighter and natural appearance than last year. This night mode also consists of a longer break: up to 10 seconds for a shot with your hand and up to 30 seconds when the smartphone is on a tripod. If you move too much, the iPhone immediately alerts you. It’s practical and easy to handle. In addition to a more natural rendering, I noticed that generally the iPhone 11 Pro preserved many more details than the pixel. The Night mode of the iPhone 11 Pro therefore seems more effective than the Night Sight mode of the Pixel 3.

Note that the two comparison photos were taken in a very dark environment in the middle of the night.

Portrait mode

The portrait mode of the iPhone 11 Pro is convincing, it always uses 2x mode for a 50mm type rendering. You can also use it with 1x mode, but the result is less interesting with this focal length.

The result is not perfect, in particular with the cutting of hair or certain forms, nevertheless the shots have a lot of details than in the portrait mode of other models of smartphones: in particular in the grain of the skin which is more realistic.

This is a mode that I use very often, it gives relief to photographs and allows you to highlight a specific element. In the gallery below, you can observe a mixture of modes and cameras, there is at least one photo taken with the portrait mode.

What to think of the iPhone 11 pro in photography ?

So what about the iPhone 11 pro in photography ? It’s not easy to judge a smartphone in photography. There are hardware and software developments that bring great changes from one generation to another. For example, Apple clearly saw the Smart HDR mode of its iPhone 11 Pro. The latter abnormally flattens images by increasing the shadows and attenuating reflections, while saturating the whites. In the end, we lose a lot in detail because of smoothing and noise reduction. But it’s even worse in other brands.

The iPhone 11 Pro remains one of the best students, and we have not yet discovered the Deep Fusion mode which should significantly improve the rendering of certain shots. I appreciate the much more natural rendering, whether in low light mode or with portrait mode. The Galaxy Note 10 or the OnePlus 7 Pro tends to soften the skin, when the Pixel 3 lacks dive, the iPhone 11 pro marks its difference.

For video mode, Manuel evokes it a lot in his test video. The iPhone 11 is a good smartphone to make videos. It films in 4K at 60 images per second, and it is particularly stable when filmed in 1080p. Besides, the progressive zoom even if it is not perfect and much more effective than what can be seen in competition.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro Battery

For two years, I had an iPhone X then a Google Pixel 3. Suffice to say that these two smartphones are bad students in terms of autonomy. When I read Apple’s promise regarding the autonomy of the iPhone 11 Pro, I said to myself: “Apple did not give itself a big challenge, it is really one of the recurring defects of the iPhone, but I can’t wait to discover that”.

First thing, Apple provides a Type-C 18 Watts USB charger. This avoids buying an extra charger to take advantage of the fast load, moreover I recommend it (30 watts which also loads Android smartphones, small macbooks and other iPad pro) very well if you are looking for one.

The iPhone 11 pro loads from 0 to 100 % in 1 hour and 39 minutes With the 18 Watts wired charger, when it would have taken almost 4 hours with the old charger 5 Watts USB-A. On the 7.5 watt wireless recharge side (Qi certification), we are still less than 3 hours for a full load. In short, it’s better, but it’s far from Android smartphones that easily pass below the time for a full wired load.

We do not have a technical protocol similar to that used on Android smartphones. We cannot therefore compare the autonomy between the iPhone 11 Pro and the other smartphones. What we have seen over 15 days of use: The iPhone 11 Pro takes advantage of a real gain in autonomy. The example below is speaking: disconnected at 8 am around 50 %, after a big day of work … The iPhone was 10 % of autonomy at 11 pm. So he does not hold two days in a row, it would be something stupid to say it, but He will hold any full day of 24 hours – even the very big days. This is really the most significant on this smartphone, and it’s not nothing.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro Networks and Telecommunications

The iPhone 11 Pro is a model in the material. First, it is Wi-Fi 6 compatible like the latest high-end Samsung smartphones. Then, the 4G LTE Mimo 2 × 2 part is very solid. Besides, the iPhone 11 Pro supports all 4G frequency bands used in France, and you will have no difficulty using it in all markets. Same for Bluetooth 5.0, it’s at all good.

We have not noticed any particular problems. This is not the best in the category of the network catch, but it is a very good student. I heard some criticisms concerning the absence of 5G on the iPhone 11 pro: in France, 5G will be partially available around June 2020. My only fear is the discount of the iPhone 11 Pro from 2021, users will look for a 5G compatible smartphone on this price segment, but this is just a detail.

Apple iPhone 11 pro release date and price

The iPhone 11 Pro is really not given: 1,129 euros with only 64 GB of internal storage. There is no 128 GB version… The 256 GB version is 200 euros more, which is also a very important price difference.

It is really the reproach that we make to this iPhone 11 Max: it is expensive and although we can see that it is a product with excellent finishes, this very high price is not always justified when we Observe competition. Let’s not forget any details that the advantage of Apple products is that the resale price remains high, even 2 to 3 years after its purchase.

Apple iPhone 11 pro alternatives
