If a PDF is signed with an identification or a digital certificate, it is locked to avoid any modification of the document. The digital identifications or certificates used to sign PDF are used for commercial and legal purposes and are governed by legislation in many countries.
Can I modify a PDF that I signed ?
If you are the only signatory, You can delete the signature, then use or modify the source document.
To delete a signature, click on the signature field field and choose Delete signature.
If you have obtained a signed PDF, you can invite the signator to delete the signature and share the PDF or send an unconted copy of the PDF.
Is there a way to recover the uncommon PDF and sign it again ?
If you are the only signatory, You can delete the signature then use or modify the document. If the document is signed by other users, you can invite the initiator to share an unsigned copy or the source document with you.
What happens if a PDF is locked after the signature ?
Sometimes the signatory or yourself choose to lock the document after the signing. In this case, the document becomes accessible in reading alone and no modification is authorized; even a signature cannot be added in the document. The option Lock the document after signing is useful if you are the last or the only signatory.
What are the scenarios in which a PDF is locked ?
When signing a PDF using your digital identification, the PDF is defined in reading alone for other users. If you have received a PDF signed digitally by other users, you can sign it, but not modify it.
When signing a PDF, if the signatory chooses to lock the document after signing, the document is defined in reading alone for everyone, including the signatory.
What happens if several signatures are required and the PDF is locked after the first signature ?
You have no choice but to create the PDF again or ask the PDF to the owner. Generally, the PDF is locked for edition, but not for signature unless you or the first signatory choose the option Lock the document after signing when signing.
How to better manage these problems in the future ?
Before signing a PDF, you can save a copy. In addition, when the PDF signs, you are invited to record in PDF format. You can choose another name to have the original PDF not signed.
If you expect other users to sign the PDF, do not choose the option Lock the document after signing in the signing dialog box as or sign the document.

How to sign an Adobe PDF on Adobe Acrobat X?
Solution
- With Adobe Acrobat X, open the document you want to sign.
- On the right side, select Tools, Then Sign and certify in available options.
- Once you have opened the menu Sign and certify, Click on the button Signs.
- Move the mouse, holding its left button leaning to draw a frame in the area
of the document in which the signature must be displayed. While you draw the frame, the area
Reserved for the signature is represented by a blue rectangle (see illustration).
As soon as you release the left mouse button, the following window is displayed (see illustration):
In this window, you can modify the following options to adapt your signature:
- Sign as: – Use the drop -down menu in this field to select the certificate
required signature. The name (Common Name) of your certificate is displayed in the drop -down menu.
Choose the certificate with which you are signing. For a Switzerland, please select the
qualified certificate (designated by “qualified signature”) - Create an appearance: – This option allows you to modify the appearance of the signature in the
document once you have signed. You can also click on creation of an aspect
signature to create a new appearance. - Lock the document after signature – by activating this check box, it is possible
lock the document after signing to prevent any modification.
- Once you have adapted, click the button Sign.
- Now Adobe will ask you to save a copy of the signed document. Navigate
Until the target folder, indicate the name you want to give to the file and click on
the button Save.
Noticed: If the digital certificate you use to sign is saved on a
