Activate Firefox background updates with Windows

Firefox 90 has introduced updates in the background, a new feature for Windows which checks the existence of updates, downloads and installs them, all in the background, even when Firefox is not in progress execution. You have the latest version of Firefox each time you open your browser. This feature has been gradually integrated and is now completely included from the Firefox 94 version.

The background update feature adds an input Firefox background update In the Windows task planner who, when this input is activated, launches update verification every seven hours when the browser is not used. Under Windows, there is now fewer interruptions, because, when updates in the background are activated, Firefox no longer warns you of the existence of updates. Instead, in the background an agent downloads and installs updates, even when Firefox is closed.

To activate or deactivate this feature, follow the instructions below:

  1. Click on the Firefox menu button FX89MenubuttonThen on settings
  2. In the general panel, go down to the section Firefox updates. FX94UPDATESETTINGS-WIN
  3. Select the parameter Install updates automatically (recommended) and check or uncheck the box by side of When Firefox is not launched To activate or deactivate the functionality.

Note : You can also deactivate the background updates by selecting Check the existence of updates, but let you decide their installation ; However, this stops the automatic updates and is not recommended.

Prerequisite

To be able to operate, the functionality of the background updates requires that some conditions be met.

  • Firefox must have been installed thanks to the installer (not since, for example, a zip archive).
  • The Mozilla Maintenance Service must be functional (installed and not deactivated). When you install with the Firefox installer, it is the default behavior.
  • Firefox must have a default profile and must be executed using this profile at least once after activation of the functionality.
  • Firefox should not have linguistic package installed.
  • Firefox connection parameters must be configured to use the system proxy (this is the default setting).
