Thanks to Continuity, you will be able to make visio calls with your television, via Apple TV. Thus, you take advantage of a large screen to display your correspondents and the main photo sensor of your iPhone under iOS 17 will become a webcam. Note that this function is not unprecedented, since Apple uses the same principle between a MacBook and an iPhone, the latter becoming the webcam of the first.

Second novelty, Facetime now integrates an answering machine. If you cannot answer a Call Facetime, your correspondent can leave you a video message that you can watch later. Finally, FaceTime integrates reactions, to send your correspondents small animations in augmented reality with interactive gestures. The principle already exists with the messages application.

Apple modernizes the messages interface

Messages is one of the system applications that benefit the most from the passage to iOS 17. By drawing inspiration from competing messaging, Apple has introduced new very practical functions. It starts with the possibility of finding the last message read in a common conversation with several people (the kind of conversation where dozens of messages await you if you have the misfortune not to consult it for a moment).

In addition, it is now easier to answer a message: up to iOS 16, you had to press a long time and choose “answer” in the context menu. Now you just have to slide the message to the left. Another novelty: the search engine integrates with iOS 17 filters to find a message, a photo or a contact more easily. Messages is now able to transcribe a voice message to read it later. Finally, it is now easier to share and request a geographic rental with another iPhone user.

Messages also benefits from an interface update. From now on, all additional actions (reactions, emojis, memojis, gifs, photos, applications, music, images, “digital touch”, etc.) are no longer accessible between the keyboard and the text input field. They appear in an accessible menu by pressing the ” +” icon (see above). It is a more practical menu than the old one, because there are still a lot of iPhone users who do not know where additional actions are located.

And that’s not all. Apple brings two other messages to messages. The first is called check in. This is an automatic system that allows you to keep your loved ones (friends or families) informed when you make a trip, after an evening for example. When you arrive at your destination, an alert is sent to them. And if you no longer move forward, an alert appears on your device. If you do not answer, the system sends relevant information to your loved ones.

Apple incorporates stickers in iOS 17

The other improvement concerns virtual stickers, also called stickers. There are already stickers in messages. But these are generally improved emojis (or mixed with animal memojis). Stickers combines all current graphics resources (GIF, Emojis, Memojis, Stickers) a library of small thematic images that you can enrich with your own creations. To do this, simply cut an object from a photo (functions integrated into iOS 16) and import it into stickers. And if you do it from a live photo, the cutting object becomes … a live sticker !

Stickers are used everywhere. In messages of course, to converse or to react to the message of contact (current reactions are deleted and replaced by stickers). In Notes to illustrate your ideas. In Keynote and pages for your documents and your presentations. Or in mail for your electronic messages. You can even use them in third -party applications, because the sticker menu is accessible from the system keyboard. And you can obviously create them on a device to use them on all the others … thanks to continuity and iCloud.

The predictive keyboard is smarter

This virtual keyboard also evolves. With iOS 17, the keyboard is connected to your password trousseau and your contacts. You can now insert a password or the name and contact details of contact in any text field. To bring up these two options, simply leave your finger pressed on the entry area to display the context menu. Today, two options are possible: scan or copy text (if the latter is present in the clipboard).

Predictive strike and self -dector gain in relevance. Thanks to machine learning, suggestions are now taking into account the context of the sentence. As for Gmail for example, predictive suggestions can have a word or the end of a sentence (for a polite formula, for example). And it is now easier to go back from an automatic correction.

Airdrop becomes faster and even more useful

Airdrop is an essential feature in the Apple experience. Thanks to it, it is very easy to share a file or a photo with a nearby device, whether it is a mac, an iPhone or an iPad. Now Airdrop becomes more practical. First, it becomes compatible with WiFi and cellular networks. When you share several photos, for example, and the two devices are no longer within reach of the Bluetooth signal, sharing is no longer cut: the flow transits by another network based on iCloud. Also note that IOS 17 can block images and pornographic videos shared by Airdrop.

Then Airdrop now includes a function called namedrop. Typical of the Apple experience, Namedrop offers to easily share your contact sheet with another iPhone user. To do this, nothing could be simpler: just bring the two phones closer to each other. Of course, you can choose to share all or part of your contact sheet. Likewise, sharing files via Airdrop is now initiated by bringing two devices closer, simply. A notification appears to request confirmation.

Same thing for Shareplay. The function that allows you to consume simultaneous content with a loved one becomes easier to use: when you use a compatible application, just bring two smartphones closer to see the Shareplay option on the screen appear. A notification appears on the target device to confirm the sharing. It works with videos, music and multiplayer games.

Widgets become interactive

The last big evolution of iOS widgets appeared with version 14 of the operating system. Since then, Apple has enriched the number of widgets, but has not changed their interactivity. With iOS 17, they become more interactive. Turn on a connected light with Home. Launch a playlist in Apple Music or a sporting exercise in form. Confirm that a task has been accomplished in reminders. All this can now be accomplished by a simple tapping.

With iOS 17, iPhone will have a new feature that already exists on Apple Watch: the possibility of ringing your smartphone remotely to find it more easily.
